Slap!! Once again?!
She didn't even know what to tell him, so she just sat down and put her head in her hands waiting for the outburst. But it never came. All that happened was a salute from the former Cadet to the present Captain, and one back. No hatred, no malice and no anger. Just respect. Then her fianc walked over to her and asked for her hand. One second later, she felt her hand lighten as the engagement ring was taken off. And then he was gone. That was the end of it.. no more words were exchanged.
But then, she understood it all. She understood his concern, his calmly restrained sadness and disappointment, and his letting go of her. He was the bigger guy there, she knew, and she loved him for that. She understood everything he had done, and everything he had done.. somehow now it all fell into places.. the outrageous flirting, telling her that he loved her, his forlorn smile when she had agreed for the marriage, his impassiveness whenever she was with him.. somehow it was all justified. She could no longer blame him for his actions. Yes, she definitely understood.
What she didn't understand was the man who was standing right behind her, and not uttering a word. It was time to face the past again, she thought grimly, before she turned back.
'Ok, let me get this clear, sir, what are you doing here?'
'I – I- had to see you.' His reply was shaky and unsure.. ' I had to come back to you. I had to tell you that without you, my life would just be a mess. Everything I did, I did it for you. I didn't tell you anything before leaving because I wasn't sure if I would make it. But I had to come back. I—I love you, Naina, I've never stopped loving you.'
'Really?' she smirked
'Yes' his reply was calm, firm yet bewildered.
'So let me get this straight. You go away telling me that you don't love me and I get engaged to another man, who by the way, happens to love me and had said so. Then you turn up the day after my engagement and feed me all sorts of fluffy and mushy crap. Then you just let my fianc break my engagement and do nothing. NOTHING! He let me go because of you, and now I am heartbroken because of you. Don't you see, it all comes back to you. You leave us both heartbroken and gain nothing. See, you are the kind of careless person who just smashes things on his way and doesn't care about the mess. You don't, you never did care about the aftermath of your actions. If, before leaving, you would have told me that you loved me, I would wait for you. Even if you died, I would cherish the fact that you did love me. But now, see what you gave me, nothing? You're careless, sir, very ditzy, and would do anything to get what you want. See, you don't give a damn about the aftermath of what you have done. But maybe, just maybe sometimes you should care about what others want, and realize it before its too late. And in our case, its too late already.'
And then she was gone.
He sat back and let her go. Somehow, he couldn't help silently agreeing with her, it was too late for them. This was the aftermath, he though reflectively, and he had caused it. There was no going back anymore as he realized his life to be a lie. He had come back for a lie. And he mused to himself, is it not better to end your life than live it as a lie?'
The first option, unfortunately, did appeal to him.
