Part III: Ek Rang Inkaar Ka

Chapter 12: Baghban

Tulsi Virani had liked Barkha Doshi immensely. The first day, after the formal introduction as the food manager for the party, Tulsi had seen her at work and found her hardworking, efficient and resourceful. Barkha had also tactfully avoided an altercation between Gayatri Virani and the head chef about the method of preparation by gently persuading the older woman that since Virani Group of Hotels was inherently run by Viranis', it was inconceivable that the approach to cooking differed a great deal from the ones practiced by Virani women. And then there was the fact that she was Ganga's ward. Nakul had behaved abominally with the girl and yet she had not sought to incinerate the fight. That had impressed Tulsi a great deal.

Nakul Virani was not very happy with himself either. Positively appalled by the way he'd treated Barkha, he was more discomfited by the thought of apologizing to her yet again. That is if she didn't hand in her papers the next day. And he didn't inflict as much damage on Manthan as he have liked to. When he came back, injured and bleeding, both his mother and his younger brother were up, waiting. Tripti had shook her head in disbelief that he'd managed to let Manthan get the first shot but brought out the first aid kit and tended to his wounds nevertheless. His father had entered the room a couple of minutes later and reprimanded him severely. Sahil Virani had then gone down to see if Manthan needed any assistance dressing his hand, even though Manthan was sure to shrug him off.

The scene at the breakfast table at Shantiniketan the next day was positively exuberant. It was the beginning of the new year and for most of the Virani family, it had begun on an auspicious note. Pari and Archita were animatedly discussing the party, Eklavya and others were in festive spirit after the morning ritual of worship which Tulsi had conducted. So when Manthan walked in with a bandaged hand, everyone was surprised. "Tumhare haath ko kya hua, Manthan?" "Got up on the wrong side of the bed.", Manthan answered tersely. He had just begun to sip his coffee when Nakul walked up to the table and pulled a chair. "Ab tumhein kya hua?" Eklavya asked. "Never mind .....you too must have got up from the wrong side of the bed." Eklavya continued dryly. It was an open secret that Nakul and Manthan did not see eye to eye...more so literally today. Manthan made to get up from the breakfast table when Tulsi's voice called out sternly, "Sit down and finish your breakfast Manthan. And you too Nakul. I will not tolerate temper tantrums from twenty year olds." Glaring at each other, but refusing to disobey their elder, they sat down and finished their breakfast in silence while Lakshya, KT, Pari, Eklavya and occasionally Mayank filled in their quota of words. "And Nakul...You will see me before you leave for work."

By contrast, the breakfast scenario at Ganga's house was subdued. Barkha walked in at fifteen past nine, sat down and poured herself a cup of tea with a customary "Good morning Massi....And Happy New Year."
" Same to you beta. " For sometime Barkha and Ganga concentrated on the food before them. "Are you aware of the reason behind the fight?" Ganga asked."Mrs. Tripti Virani." was Barkha's laconic reply. " Tripti Virani???" Barkha refused to expound further and Ganga did not press her to. " Tripti Virani.....she seems to have the propensity of causing discord in the most perfect, harmonious relationships." Ganga said with passive resignation, an emotion Barkha had never seen in Ganga. "I once had the home and family most women dream about. I had a loving husband - Sahil Virani and two angelic kids...Nakul and Lakshya..." Ganga's voice sounded as if she was far off in some dream. " Massi......What happened?" "Thodi bewafai maine ki....Thodi Sahil ne.....Aur sazaa mere bachko ko mili....." Ganga's tone changed from wistful to bitter.
" I suspected Sahil of having an affair with Mohini....Harsh's wife....I refused to believe in his protestions of innocence.....I .....I ...sought the help of one of my friends to prove the same.....Someone who I thought would be my support during those trying times......Do you know who she was?Tripti......" " Massi...Did you ever confront Mr. Virani ? Did you ever ask your friend why she backstabbed you? " "No....I was too hurt .... too shattered....too angry to admit Sahil was a human...and perhaps too stupid to realize that my children would suffer the consequences....I would not have separated from Sahil otherwise." Ganga finished sadly. Barkha went up to her aunt and hugged her..."Perhaps I'm being inordinately selfish massi..." she said honestly..."But for my sake ...I'm glad things happened that way." "And besides....", she said before leaving the room, "You did what was right for your self respect ....And no relationship is worth sacrificing that for..." Barkha said sagely.

Barkha refused to resign from her position on the principle that she had done no wrong. She was not sure if she could complain against Nakul Virani on an official basis, but someway and someday, she would get back at him alright. Even if he were the darling son of her aunt. She left for work at her usual time, willing herself to have a little more self control.

Ganga had not been expecting visitors and hence when the door bell rang, she was surprised. She was doubly surprised when she saw Nakul Virani at the door. "May I please speak to Barkha?" he asked politely.
Ganga raised her eyebrows and answered, "She's already left for work." "Oh...In that case...I shall talk to her at the Hotel...Thank you ma'am...." "And ma'am...." Nakul said hesitantly...."Yes????" "Happy New Year..." Ganga's response was a slight smile.

The second visitor less than an hour later surprised her even more. "Arey Maa....Aap..." Ganga addressed Tulsi Virani.."Please come in...." Tulsi came in and after the customary exchanges of greetings of New Year and each other's health, Tulsi asked her " Barkha kahan hai?" " Its funny....Everyone keeps asking for Barkha today...Nakul came in an hour ago ..." "I know.....By his own admission, he needed to apologize to her and I just asked him to precipitate the apology." "Did I miss something here?." "Yes " and succintly she narrated the whole Nakul - Barkha incident. "Barkha did not mention a word about this." , Ganga said frowning.."I would have taken Nakul to task for it...". " I already did....Let it be.....Ganga.....Can I ask something of you?" "Of course maa....." " I would like Barkha's hand .............For Nakul."

I'm not sure of the exact reason for the rift in the Ganga Sahil relation so this may not be accurate...And as far as I recollect, Tripti was supposed to be Ganga's friend....If this was not, I beg pardon.

Wonderful 👏 I'm loving every bit of it and craving for more !

Pls don't reduce Nakul's focus in the plot. Let him be in the Spotlite. He hardly has any significance in the show 😭 atleast i'm glad to read his story in the FanFic..tnx to you. He needs his share of Goodies too as he didn't get anything since childhood.

Chapter 13: Ek Hi Rasta

When Manthan was thirteen, he had seen an alternative fairy tale version of The Frog Prince. The frog had impressed on the princess, the need for a kiss, if she wanted to see him transformed into Prince Charming.
After the kiss however, the frog had hopped off with a disgusted, "If this is how Princesses kiss....I'm better off with a female frog." Manthan was reminded of the frog's reaction when he saw Barkha's contorted face. "Ooooh.....This is rich..." he said sounding smug. "You ......as Mrs. Nakul Virani...Haaaaa haaaa haaaaaa." "Manthan....." Barkha sounded exasperated. "Remind me please....why you cannot downright refuse?" , Manthan asked, now wiping off mirthful tears from his eyes. This potentially was the biggest joke of the year.

"Because of my dad's will." "Which is?" "I need to marry the groom of my guardian's choice before my twenty third birthday. Which is a month from now. " "Or else?" " I lose control of the Doshi Hotels and Inns and my parent's estate." "Please continue...." "It is to be left to my guardian's discretion to dispose of the property with a clause that she does not revert it back to me. And do you know the way her bequest is entailed, who gets ownership of the hospitality business? Nakul Virani!!!!!!". "This is a serious issue," Manthan said, making an understatement. If she didn't know Manthan too well, she would have been fooled by his seemingly poker faced expression.

"Barkha....I have the perfect solution to your problem.....Lets get married....", Barkha glared up at him. " No no....I'm not kidding....." "Manthan dear...." Barkha answered sweetly, " You have no more wish to marry me than you want to see Krishna Tulsi married to Lakshya Virani...." , she finished knowingly. "I don't know what you are talking about..." Manthan said, rather airily. "Oh yes you do.......Barkha ... did you really punish KT along with that Lakshya....Was she in tears? Was she feeling really bad?" Barkha imitated Manthan's tones. It was Manthan's turn to sound offended. "I don't really care a damn for her you know...". "Manthan... please come out of the denial stage...I've seen the way you look at her, react when she's in Lakshya's company. Do I need to elaborate some more? Atleast don't lie to yourself....." "And for sometime.....please concentrate on my problem", she said, now sounding worried.

Emotional coercion had been one of Tulsi's strengths. She had used that effectively against Ganga when she made her proposal for a match between Nakul and Barkha so that Ganga did not reject it outright. Though hesitant, Ganga had atleast agreeed to ask Barkha what her thoughts were about the same. "Barkha.....Let me make one thing clear to you. You are not to make decisions under any duress. If you accept, it should be only because you think you can spend a lifetime with the person concerned. Not because of any other obligation." Ganga had told her frankly. Barkha had heard her out with a self contained expression and called Manthan, pleading urgency. And here they were, trying to find seemingly non-existent alternatives to the problem.

Handling her family's reaction to the same was not so much of a task for Tulsi Virani, they all invariably agreed with what she said. When she had broached the topic during lunchtime, Tripti was the only vociferous opposition she encountered. "I will not have this Sahil..." Tripti told her husband forcefully. "I will not have some lowly, destitute, brazen girl marrying my son....What is she ....just a banquet manager?" "Is that the only reason for your disapproval, Tripti?" Sahil asked, sounding weary now. "That she's supposedly destitute? Let me make matters clear .... This girl, Barkha Doshi, is the sole heiress to the very affluent Doshi Hotels and Inns and Doshi Estates, the collateral to Mehta Industries. And personally, I think she's a wonderful kid. And will make Nakul a very nice wife. That is, if Nakul agrees" Sahil ended the conversation wistfully.

For the second time in two days, Nakul was distressed with his emotions. His mother had come in to talk to him after dinner, telling him about his grandmother's decision of the potential alliance between him and Barkha. She had also tried her best to talk him out of it. " It should be your call Nakul, and I know you dislike the girl intensely." Tripti finished off and left the room. "Time for introspection..." Nakul thought. He did not know what alarmed him more, his grandmother's presumption that she could saddle him with his banquet manager or his lack of vehement aversion about the thought of marrying the petite, long haired and deceptively doe eyed Barkha Doshi.

Chapter 14: Vivah

For Ganga, it was a strange experience being a part of Nakul's wedding and yet not discharging any of the traditional duties assigned to the groom's mother. Still, she was thankful that her role as the bride's sole guardian gave her the opportunity of being more than just a peripheral onlooker. She had welcomed the marriage party affably, pinched the groom's nose as he entered the wedding hall and finally escorted Barkha out to the hall for the garland exchange ceremony.

Eklavya and Lakshya hoisted Nakul high up in the air, making it near impossible for Barkha to garland him. Each time she reached out, he was elevated still further by the duo. This would have gone on, had Barkha not coolly stepped very hard on Lakshya's foot, making him wince aloud and lose his balance momentarily. That lapse was enough for her to complete her part of the 'Jaimala' custom.

Nakul looked at his betrothed, dressed rather simply in red, as they walked towards the mandap. Outwardly, she looked self assured, occasionally smiling at the people around her. And yet he knew, she felt only a fraction of the confidence she usually had when she dealt with him. The only conversation they had pertinent to the wedding was when a very curious Nakul asked Barkha why she'd agreed in the first place. Her pithy reply of "Materialistic reasons" had caught him completely off guard. When she returned the question, he just put on his I-always-do-what-my-elders-ask-me-to look. Her reaction was the wry Since-when.

Tripti Virani was the only person who made her displeasure of the alliance openly evident. Just before the marriage party was about to start for their destination, she sought out Manthan and asked him "Aren't you sad that your 'special' friend is getting married to Nakul,Manthan?", all false smiles. " Tripti chachi, with the privilege of being Barkha's special friend, I know her well enough to wish her only on my worst enemy." Manthan answered with a chuckle. And just before he left the room, he turned back to face Tripti. "Chachi...Barkha is a very dear friend and I am happy to welcome her as a member into this household, the association not withstanding." , he said earnestly.

The ceremony concluded and the bride and groom went around seeking blessings from their elders. Baa first and then Mihir and Tulsi. The standoff occured when Tripti stepped back immediately, when Barkha bent down to touch her feet. Sahil veered the two of them towards Ganga with a gentle, " Its better to get blessings from those who genuinely wish you well."

A popular Virani ritual was the game of 'finding the ring' in the mixture of vermillion and milk. Barkha would have won fair and square if Nakul had not clasped his hand tightly over hers when she found it, not with the intention of making her relinquish the ring and getting it himself, but just to effectuate a time out. His 'underhand' tactics and Tripti's less than dignified behavior were the only things Barkha would remember about her wedding. And her wedding night of course.

I apologize if this one is not upto the mark
