Chapter 7: Sagai

Three days before New Year's Eve, the Virani family were scheduled to have their first family celebration in twenty years. The occasions were manifold, the return of their assumed-dead matriarch Tulsi Virani to Shantiniketan, Bhumi Virani's engagement to Abhir and of course New Year itself. The celebration itself was to be held over the entire week. The onus for organizing the bash had fallen on Nakul's shoulders, who in turn had deputed the various tasks amongst his staff.

To Barkha, Nakul assigned the charge of food exclusively. She was responsible for both quality and quantity as well as providing a unique menu. She had also been directed to enquire into possible food preferences of Bhumi and Abhir and cater accordingly. While Nakul had called her to the cabin approximately three weeks before the gathering and outlined her responsibilites, she was all formal politeness outward and delighted inherently.

When Barkha began working with the Virani family members for the menu, she could sense an undercurrent of tension amongst them, most palpably felt when the discussion veered to anything to do with Bhumi Virani and Abhir's engagement. Manthan had told her the circumstances under which his father had given his consent to the alliance and told her that half the family, most notably his grandmom and uncle Sahil had been vehemently opposed to it. He had also told her that despite his own misgivings about Abhir, Bhumi's happiness was his main concern. For Manthan's sake and as the first test of her capabilities, Barkha wanted the event to be memorable.

A week before Bhumi's official engagement, Tanya and Bhumi had invited Abhir for dinner with their family. Barkha, as usual was catering for the occasion and food served was exclusively for Abhir's liking. She sat with Bhumi and Tanya for more than an hour discussing what appetizers, entre's , desserts and drinks were to be served, worked very hard to create the right ambience for the food she was going to serve. And after the compliments which had been given to her during and after dinner, she was sure the Virani's and Abhir had enjoyed the evening immensely.

She was not a little surprised when during her regular lunch supervision at the restaurant diner, Nakul and Karan Virani asked her to come up to the conference room immediately. She had an intution that something had gone wrong and with some trepidation she entered the Hotel conference room.

"Miss Doshi....You were in charge for the dinner yesterday night, were you not?" "Yes Sir" "So will you know explain to me, why my wife is suffering from food poisoning?".

Nakul who had been looking at Barkha while Karan questioned her, saw her face turn from blood red to blanch white. "Food poisoning?", she muttered. "Yes....Abhir and Bhumi have been afflicted with mild symptoms but Tanya's really ill."

Chapter 8: Gumraah

Blind devotion to a cause or person is often disastrous. As it turned out to be in Krishna Tulsi's case. Her Baa's words were law to her and any expressed wish/desire to be obeyed. And right now, her Baa was opposed to the Abhir Bhumi association. So it had to be stopped. She had an ally in Lakshya, who thought likewise. Persuasion wouldn't work on Bhumi, she was completely headstrong and over the moon for Abhir. Neither would Tanya aunty listen to her. Abhir was shrewd enough to wipe out any circumstantial evidence which Sahil provided the family with. Too often he had turned tables on his detractors. As the engagement day drew closer, her Baa's anxiety rose to alarming levels and the doctor advised her again and again to destress herself. "How can I not worry KT? I can't see my child being crucified before my own eyes. If only there were some more time." she lamented. And that's when KT and Lakshya decided to do something they would have never done otherwise. They decided to play unfair.

KT had chanced upon the menu discussions for the dinner accidently. And realized that Abhir was allergic to mushrooms. She and Lakshya had decided to sabotage the food, hoping Abhir would fall ill, the engagement ceremony would be postponed and hopefully Sahil, Lakshya and she would come up with cogent, incriminating evidence against Abhir in the meantime. What she hadn't realized that Tanya was also equally, if not more allergic to the same food.

Both were agasht when the food sabotaging plan backfired.Even more so when Tanya took violently ill and yet insisted the ceremony be held as scheduled. Abhir would be home for dinner again and they would have only one more chance.

Krishna Tulsi had a bowl full of powdered mushrooms in her hand while Lakshya kept a watch outside. It would be a matter of a few seconds and this time for sure, they would get the right man. She had just uncovered the vessel of palak paneer and was about to empty the contents of the bowl into it when a hand caught her wrist. KT looked up, horrified to see the unusally stoic banquet manager. Manthan was at the door, his hand around Lakshya's neck.

"Let him go Manthan." Barkha spoke in her usual soft but firm voice, glancing at the door. "I'll handle them." Manthan was inclined to disagree but he knew Barkha did not believe in getting mean. She got even.

Chapter 9:Jawab

To Lakshya Virani, Krishna Tulsi was not just his dadi's protege. She was the playful, innocent, efferevescent girl he was head over heels in love with. And would go to great lengths to protect. Here the length was just the other end of the Virani kitchen. " It was not...." both KT and Lakshya had started out at the same time, trying to keep the other's involvement to the minimum. "If it were not a slur on my job and efficiency which your thoughtless deed resulted in, I might have been impressed. " Barkha intercepted them, half amused, half caustic. " Leniency ....some other time. What you, Mr. Virani and your girlfriend will do is.." "leave the kitchen immediately and not enter it any time for the next whole week." Nakul completed Barkha's sentence from the doorway. "You should be ashamed of your self. Did you even stop to realize the repercussions of your actions? Did you think about anyone's discomfort? No I guess.....My whole staff was belittled, their credentials challenged.....Did you stop to think about all those people you would unknowingly hurt?" Nakul continued his tirade against his crestfallen brother and his partner-in-crime. "If I catch any of you near the kitchen till the whole engagement ceremony is concluded, I will personally go and file a police case against you for your mischief. " he finished menacingly.

Barkha listened to Nakul's whole speech berating his brother with an outward stoic face and white fury within. After he finished, she swiftly walked out of the other door, lest she turn back and say/do something, she would rue later. How very convenient that Lakshya was Nakul Virani's younger brother. He had taken over the task of comeuppance for the offenders which had righfully belonged to her. And he could do that because he was her boss. She gave herself a couple of minutes to calm down and channelize her anger towards other professional obligations.

Nakul really hadn't wanted to interfere. He believed Barkha had every right to censure Lakshya and KT for their thoughtless action. But he couldn't just stand there and watch an outsider slight his sibling. And specially if she was his subordinate. So he had jumped in and let Lakshya off with a warning. Barkha had walked off before he could get a chance to offer her any explanations on his behalf. "Things can't get any worse than this. " he thought shaking his head. He was wrong.

For the party on New Year's Eve which was also in honor of Tulsi Virani, the who's who of the city were present. Karan had personally issued an invitation to Ganga and she had accepted, albeit reluctantly and only because she wanted to see her Tulsi maa. She walked in, resplendent in a green outfit and met all the her ex-in laws rather graciously. Tulsi, Damini, Gautam and Karan all welcomed her and for the better part of the evening she was with Karan, talking and chatting about business and other things. She also spoke to Sahil with a little more courtesy she accorded him in office. When one of Ganga's business associates and his wife, came up to her and started conversing, she introduced Sahil as "Mr. Virani. The Junior manager of Mehta Industries." "But I thought you were his wife?" the associate's wife blurted out, to her and Sahil's acute embarrasment. "I only wish she still was." was Sahil's honest rejoinder before he excused himself from the group.

"That was an illuminating answer." one of Tripti's so called cronies taunted Tripti. Tripti, who was already incensed by Sahil's unwavering attention to Ganga, shot back " Of course he wishes she was. Women like her don't come cheap as mistresses." "You are very right Mrs. Virani. Women like Ms. Mehta are not meant to be commonplace mistresses. That 'honor' belongs to a woman like you. Oh...sorry did I call you a woman? I'm sorry I insulted the word." Barkha's voice this time was loud enough so that several people heard her unflattering comment to Tripti.

In total disgrace, Tripti excused herself from the party and went up to her room. And did not come back again.

Chapter 10: Samna

Two things provoked the usually temperate Barkha to extremely violent responses. The first was any asperation on her character and the second, any insinuation against her aunt Ganga. The only residual reaction of her first encounter with Tripti Virani was a momentary impression that Tripti was an odious woman. Her unwarranted opinion of Ganga had served to reinforce that impression and made Barkha dislike her actively. Only her position as an employee in the party made her temper down the initial vitriolic reply she had wanted to give Mrs. Sahil Virani. "Like son like mother". she thought, thoroughly disgusted.

Tripti's inauspicious start to the New Year did not end with Barkha's verbal lashing. Furious that no one from the Virani clan had admonished the girl for her nerve, she stomped up towards Shantiniketan. Halfway through, Manthan intercepted her and poured salt on her wounds with a smug,"Arey Tripti chachi, Maine suna uss banquet manager ne aapki beizzati ki? Uff...Main to bhool gaya ...Beizzati uski hoti hai jiski koi izzat ho....". Archita and Pari giggled at Manthan's mocking statement and Tripti had tears in her eyes when she reached her room.

Nakul had missed the party to be with his very good friend who was leaving India for good to settle in Europe. He had a gala time and by the time he came back the party was almost over with all the service staff winding up the dinner remains. He went up to wish his mother a Happy New Year and to his dismay, found her sobbing.

By the time Nakul had finished listening to Tripti's version of what happened in the party, he was ready to throttle both Manthan and Barkha Doshi. He hurried down and asked one of the waiters where Barkha was."Ma'am has just left a minute ago, after wishing all of us a Happy New Year. She must be walking towards her car. Happy New Year Sir." "Same to you." Nakul answered curtly. He almost ran towards the parking lot.

Barkha was bone tired and just wished she could go back home and sleep for eternity. Thankfully, she had an evening shift the next day. She had enjoyed the party, professionally and personally. She had liked getting acquainted with the Viranis' as Ganga's ward. Karan and Gautam were delighted to know that she was Sagar and Meghana Doshi's daughter, they had known and respected Sagar Doshi well enough. Except for her tiff with Tripti, the whole evening was something she would remember and cherish forever. She had just opened her car door, placed the packet containing her official three piece suit on the front seat and was about to step inside when, for the second time in her life, she felt Nakul's hand on her arm.

" How dare you insult my mother at the party?" Nakul ground out, pining Barkha to the side of the car with his hands. She jerked free violently and answered evenly, "She deserved it. She insulted my aunt,Ganga Mehta." "Ganga Mehta? Then whatever my mom would have said about her would have definitely been true." This was the last straw for Barkha. Her self control snapped and she slapped Nakul. Very hard. "You are just as obnoxious as your mother, Nakul Virani." Nakul's reaction was grabbing both her arms, pulling her very close with an ominous, "Tumhein mujhpar haath nahi uthana chahiye tha Barkha".
