Prime time couples head to divorce
TNN | May 31, 2012, 12.00AM ISTRecently, the new amendments in the Hindu Marriage Act have made divorce easier and the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill will give the woman, in case of a divorce, half a share in her husband's residential property. In effect, quite a few serials have been showing couples seeking a divorce. Whether it is due to an extra marital affair like in Kya Hua Tera Vaada, or to save the husband's property like in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain.
Sudhir Sharma, the creative director of Na Bole Tum... Na Maine Kuch Kaha, feels that it is important for television to show something which is relevant to today's time. "The government recently decided to make significant changes in matrimonial laws. I think this provision will ensure, that women get a share in property acquired during the marriage. To keep the audience interest alive, we keep updating the story line according to the current scenarios," he says.
"This divorce law which has come into the picture will provide a quicker end to the suffering of the couples. But people shouldn't misuse it. Whatever we telecast in our shows does affect the audience. We don't want to encourage the trend of divorce. It is just a part of the drama," says Sumeet Mittal, director-producer of Diya Aur Bati Hum. Actor Kanica Maheshwari, who plays Minakshi Rathi in Diya Or Bati Hum feels that serials automatically become a reflection of society. "The writers and producers live in the same society so whatever happens outside reflects in their work." she says.
Sociologists also feel, that the television and media can bring about significant changes in the society. "It is a good initiative by the television industry to bring socially relevant issues into the picture. I think the younger generation is highly affected by whatever they watch on TV. The child protection bill which has been pending for a long time has finally been passed by the Lok Sabha. It's a great move. Even if five per cent of the people are benefited, the task will be accomplished," says sociologist Biswaroop Dey.
Producer-director Rajan Shahi, known for his serials Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai and Yeh Ristha Kya Kehlata Hai, has come up with two new shows titled Amrit Manthan and Jamuna Paar. The storyline of Amrit Manthan currently focuses on the separation of the lead couple.
According to Rajan, divorce is a bitter fact of life. "With the recent law coming into picture, there is no stigma attached to it. If two people who decided to tie the knot are unable to live happily together, divorce is the best way out. In changing times, couples part with mutual respect for each other. And we always try to manipulate our track of the story according to the recent laws," he says.
