Over possessive Dev would be like Bijoy in the making... I always thought they tried to portray Sona Dev rishta like Asha n Bijoy...
They may show some comic situations. However I still miss the ruthless but kind and in control Dev Dixit of S1 starting episodes

Vicky's behaviour shows how frustration and jealousy can ruin a person. I hope in this whole thing that cute munchkin Golu is not harmed in anyway. Vicky may try to get Soha/Sona out of the way and in the process either get harmed himself or Golu
The new entry may take control out of Vicky's hands and Vicky.. The idiot that he is won't be able to do control him

I wanted to build on your post Geena... You are right in saying that Vicky's actions are all for a reason

I am not trying to either white wash Vicki's intentions or his deeds. Just trying to see why he says and does the things that he does.

Vicky is behaving as if Dev & vicky have equal stakes on this wealth because of inheritance..

1. Dev is self made...

2. vicky has no legal claim (unlike the sisters who can claim their mother's wealth.. dev himself said Ishwari is IC's malkin)

3. Vicky/his parents have very little to do with Dev's success...

4. The only thing that vicky has claim on is that he took care of IC while Dev was weak.. But even there we have seen that vicky harmed the business more than helped it...

Like Lakshmi said, Vicky was given umpteen chances... unlike mami who has been satisfied once she got the figurehead status at IC.. (She holds the keys but its only ishwari, dev and sona call the shots. For example, did anyone ask mami if nikki can come back in the house LOL! And they don't have a monthly ration budget, do they!).

Vicky was admitted in a very good institute the fees for which is pretty high and Dev gave the cheque without thinking twice. When RadhaRani wanted a car for her son immediately Dev obliged. When Vicky complained about the nature of his appointed post in the company Iswari and Dev readily gifted him that despite Sonakshi 's displeasure. Isn't this appreciation? Any one in Dev's position will buy them a house and accommodate them there. But did that happen? Still Vicky feels sidelined?

I am sure Vicky hardly bore the burden of the family. Dev's company is doing well despite his being away from it physically and I know he would have monitored the matters from outside. I am pretty sure Dev has a very competent group of officials who have the skill in running the company. Their input is valuable. Vicky would have just gone to the office and enjoyed his chair. He has neither the brains nor the intention to involve to make his presence felt.

So I won't recognise his contribution as valuable in those seven years. Moreover he is the one who sold half of the office to Sona for his own benefit. And the tax inconsistencies? Vicky only is responsible again.

This feeling of loneliness is pushing him over the edge. He feels he is losing everything and Dev winning everything. All his life his one goal was to win something against Dev. Now that he knows he has lost, he is not able to take his failure with grace. He feels that Dev first took away his dad, then has moved to take away his wife, his mother and his son. Where earlier he thought he had achieved something that Dev could never have(becoming a dad) found that not only Dev is a dad, but also such a one where his own son is not his own anymore in a way. The realization that he is expected to just fade into second place now that Dev is back has made him completely lose his mind. He is no longer able to contain or control himself.

Vicky is beyond repair now, except one ray of hope Elena-mami! Mami is the only person who has ever validated him. On Friday when he was seeking solidarity with his wife, Elena should have jumped at the chance. It was a tough one. Her husband was creating a ruckus in front of the family. What she said is right too... They need to talk about "power transfer" with Dev and Buaji. However, Elena, much like her cousin, does not realise the power she has over her husband. Had she validated him then and then had a chat with Dev & Ishwari it may have been fruitful. Elena & mami know that Vicky is planning something scary. They need to act on this pronto

Of all people, mamaji should be kept out of this

Edited to add: What really saddens me is that he commented on Sona and Neha's ability/choice to bear children when in fact, he is the one who has not enjoyed parenthood, as a result of his choices.

Similarly, he commented on Nikki's unconventional relationship status. One that she is honest about, and only hid from her family because she was not sure they would accept her or not. He did exactly the same thing 7 years ago. He eloped (and used money stolen from IC!) with his lover because he knew both families would not accept the alliance. sau sau choohe and all...

Great discussion about (as DQ aptly named it) the Tripathi tragedy! I especially loved your post, Geena, but I have a slightly different view on the situation -- maybe not even a differing view, just a different perspective on the same points you touch. In short, I think Mami's greed and Vicky's greed are two different beasts, because they originate from different sources.

In my view, Mami's sense of the injustice done unto her is somewhat valid. She married a man who rarely showed her affection and lost no opportunity to taunt and malign her. Moreover, Mamaji made for himself exactly the kind of life that *he* wanted without much consideration for her needs or wants. This is very similar to the conflict that happened between Neha and Ranveer, but imagine if Neha was not allowed any say in the matter and had to live a life completely different from the one she envisioned for herself. I imagine that Mami had very similar desires but she was not given even an iota of agency to pursue them other than through the Dixits. Her husband also poured all kinds of resources into helping the Dixits, and not just financial resources. All his emotional wealth also went to Ishwari and her children while she and Vicky were made to feel second best.

In that sense, Mami's shikayats with her life are very concrete, and while she is still entitled and greedy, her greed is manageable. She wants that position, power, and wealth that her husband never gave her, and she envied Ishwari's power and the respect she commanded from the beginning of the show. She never had the capacity to envision a long-term plan for earning that herself, but once she could see it readymade in front of her eyes, wanted it. When Sona first came to IN, both as a nutritionist and then as Dev's wife, she unconsciously made herself a threat to Mami, an impression that she reversed with the act of returning the keys to her. Mami's "job security" so to speak, was further solidified when Dev apologised to her; just look at the difference between her chugli to Riya and her proud talk with Neha!

Vicky is a different ball-game altogether. I completely agree with Timbarucha when she says that everything that Vicky is today is a product of his parents' dysfunctional marriage, and it's fascinating to me how Mami and Vicky are a warped imitation of Ishwari and Dev. Mami passed on her sense of injustice to Vicky -- that resentment against his father and his side of the family -- but in Vicky's case, that resentment and sense of injustice was abstract and inherited. Greed became a deeply ingrained personality trait, rather than a response to something that was denied to him. So, unlike Mami's, his greed can never be satiated because it's greed for greed's sake; the more you give him, the more the greed grows. He's never known or seen what it looks like to be content, and he has no clue what he is actually after when he tries to steal what Dev has.

He has merely inherited this resentment, and the feeling of being wronged from his mother, and on the other hand, his father, far from doing anything to correct that bias, only confirms it with his neglect (at best) and constant taunts. Ishwari and Dev sense this bias against them, and they have gone out of their way to try and balance it, but without Mamaji's initiative so late in the game, they can barely crack the surface of Vicky's developmental issues. And this is where Mami and Vicky mimic Ishwari and Dev, on a different plane. Mami was so obsessed with the injustice that had been done unto her that she moulded her son's entire personality around the her desires -- a tool that she could deploy against her indifferent husband and his family. And the funny thing is, in her own way, she genuinely believed that she was doing it for his happiness too -- that what made her happy would make him happy.

Today, Mami stands at a very similar crossroads as Ishwari did when they first moved in to IN. They have everything they worked for (no denying that their definition of "work" is very different!) but the mothers breathe a sigh of relief and turn around only to find that their sons are still rushing full speed ahead, because they don't know any other way. Ishwari taught Dev to work himself to the bone, and even after he had "made it," Dev couldn't sleep, drank too much coffee, and didn't know how to relax. Similarly, even after Mami feels that they have "made it" (they tricked the Dixits into sharing their wealth for life!), Vicky is not able to shake that feeling that he can't stop "working," i.e. destabilising the Dixits, even if it against his own interests. It's only now that Mami is content herself that she is getting a good look at what has become of Vicky in the midst of her struggle to get her way. Alkaji's expressions, especially during the family photo scene were spot on as Mami begins to perceive monster she's created. If Dev was a manifestation of Ishwari's ambition, then Vicky is a manifestation of Mami's greed.

In the end, it is the same cautionary message the show started out with. If we, as a society, don't give women agency and a voice of their own, they will find alternative ways to make themselves heard. This imposition of their feelings on their offspring results in the toxic relationships that were and are explored on the show.

@Sam, wonderful post. But there is one thing that I would like to add though. It is the last paragraph --

I feel it is not about women being given a voice, it is more about a "human" being given a voice irrespective of gender. Anytime parents impose their dreams on to their children without taking into account the child's feelings or their dreams, it results in toxic relationships. And it is not just limited to a mother - son relationship. For me it is about parent - child relationship and the toxic dependency that can develop when the parent fails to give the necessary space for their child to express themselves.

I always felt RR and her Red were typical uncle, aunts and cousins we all have, who are always jealous of something and always expecting more and more. RR and Red were never satisfied with love affection and wealth they got from Dixits and always devised plans to have their ways.
I guess their evil motive just worked for their advantage because of toxic relationship shared between Dev and Ish and due to weakening relationship between DeVakshi, and eventually RR and Red played their part to break DeVakshi.

Post leap they had what they desired as Dev and Ish were broken and gave up their control to mother son duo respectively. And RR and Red's fear to loose their control back made them to scheme different plans to ensure Sona doesn't come back to Dev's life. I guess RR is not in fear anymore whereas, Red probably is feeling all isolated thus, getting darker.

I can never sympathise with this mother son duo thinking they looked after IN and company for 7 years. It was not theirs to control, they never earned it. They destroyed their hardworking relatives lives to take over their hard earned money. If a person destroys a forest for money and later plants some flowers in their garden does't make them environment friendly.(sorry for a clumsy metaphor).
I really hope makers with handle this extended family member's issues sensibility especially there is a child involved.

Anyway great discussion about RR and Red, especially psychoanalysing their behaviour. Bravo !!
Just felt like sharing my perspective :)

Great Post! Yeah parents usually think that their kids are extension of themselves, they fail to acknowledge their kids an individual. Harsh reality!!

@Shaavi: Thanks! I agree that the show does address parent-child relationships in general, but I was trying to point out an important subset of that more general theme: toxic mother-son relationships (something I see everywhere in Indian society!). Both Ishwari-Dev and Mami-Vicky follow the specific pattern of a woman in a patriarchal system believing that the only way to exercise her will is through a male relative, moulding their sons to carry out their desires, and then getting confused and frustrated when their sons develop wills of their own, or grow beyond their control.

Of course the important distinction between Ishwari and Mami is that Ishwari built into Dev's parvarish a lot of important tools that helped him get out of that funk, and helped him lead Ishwari out of it in turn. For example, he respected Sona's independence and integrity because Ishwari had instilled value for those qualities, both in preaching and in practice. Mami, unfortunately only instilled envy and greed, which meant that Vicky wanted what Dev had. In some ways, that makes his love for Elena pretty remarkable because it's the only genuine, positive emotion I have seen him display (other than his love for fitness). I think it's because she is the only one with whom he's been able to open up and share the true root of his unhappiness -- it actually formed the basis of their relationship.

His mother and father, each in their own way, expect him to be like Dev and he feels frustrated when he can't measure up. The resentment they cause precludes a positive relationship with Dev, which could have done him a world of good. Elena is the only one who has really loved him for him, and for that she does hold a special place in his heart. Unfortunately, that tiny spot of hope is also fading because of the negativity that is overwhelming him, seeing Dev back in full form. When Dev was in his awaara phase, Vicky came off looking like the stable, family man. Now that suit-boot-Dev is back, Vicky fears that everyone will see him for the pale imitation he is (even though nobody really bought his act in the first place). That insecurity is what is driving him to madness.

One point I can't refrain from mentioning. The claim that mami n Vicky took care of IN for 7 years... It is they who were also responsible for the situation in IN getting this bad. Had they not interfered in Dev's married life and contributed to separate Devakshi IN would not have needed their care. Had they really wanted to take care of Dev n Ishwari, they would have somehow facilitated Dev Sona getting back together after the fight by playing mediators.
So this taking care business is just a claim to importance after meddling in the lives of their trusting relatives. Nothing less than backstabbing

Sam, that was a very beautiful take on this whole thing. You were so right when you said that if Dev is a product of Ishwari's ambition, Vicki is a product of RR's greed. Agree with everything you wrote
DQ, I was compelled to write for Vicki after I saw his scene with Elena where he pleads with her to support him. Usually Dev pulls my heart strings quite effortlessly but this time Vicki somehow did the same with his expression.

Thank you everyone for this amazing discussion. It brought forth so many different perspectives. Felt so good reading them😃

what Vicky now wants is not money/power/status... he actually wants to be in the position Dev is in.. i.e. people to fight over him... for his time.. for his attention... the precap shows mamaji taking pictures with Dev...
Someone sensible(read Dev)... should talk to mamaji and ask him to praise Vicky.. vicky craves that adulation from his dad...and then help vicky and golu come close. mamaji and golu are more Vicky's and less Dev's. However, the reality is they are more Dev's . Vicky needs to see this change.

He will do nothing about it. Dev has to "carry" vicky now... I hope people can fix this before its too late
