Sonakshi thinks that her father is perfect, that he is superman. Because that is the image she has of her father, and this was amply supported by everyone in the family. Saurabh knows that his father is not perfect and doesn't have any out of the way expectations from him. And he doesn't try to play perfectly to the perfect tunes of his father too. He is closer to his mother and loves everyone in his family. But none of them have tried in any way to put a blemish in the perfect image Sona has of her father. Actually they have worked as a team to maintain it.

In the first four years of his life before Sona was born, Saurabh might have seen an angrier version of his father who might also have unintentionally hurt his mother. But after Sona was born Bijoy might have changed a lot to the milder version we have seen in S1. She was his pride and joy and he wanted to be a better human being just like Dev felt when Sona came into his life. His family supported him in this genuine attempt. Just like Bijoy is the only one who annoys or belittles Saurabh, it is only Saurabh who annoys Bijoy sometimes even going out of his way to do so. Bijoy supported Sona in all her ventures and she kept him her ideal and tried her best to fulfill his dreams. There was a stark difference in the way he treated his kids, supporting Sona in every way he could while making it an "in your face" to Saurabh most of the time telling how she has become a perfect daughter to him. Saurabh rebelled in his own way but never showed his hurt to Sona for they loved each other and he was the only friend she had. This explains why Sona went with the cheque to IN to return the money instead of Saurabh. If it is her Baba's pride in question it has to be Sona who answers it.

Asha and Dida had let him have his way only mildly reprimanding him for the way he treated Saurabh. But now Asha have decided to break the illusions of both her husband and daughter. Until now she never realized that their equation and these illusions were hurting anyone. But her eyes are now open to the fact that Sona expected the same what she believed Bijoy to be from Dev. When what she believes itself is non-existent how it could become true and whatever Dev does will never amount to her father's perfection. She has finally found the problem in their upbringing and is taking measures to make it right. She got her confirmation from Bijoy himself when he asked for her assurance that he was the best or a good father and husband and that Dev had asked him if Asha had never found any faults in him ever. The perfection that Sona wanted from Dev was a Herculean task for him and it would never have been a reality. This expectation of her alone was enough to doom their marriage. This was the reason why Asha didn't reassure Bijoy out rightly like she usually does and said that they made it work together.

If anyone can make Sona understand what she expected from Dev was next to impossible it is Bijoy. If he realizes what this perfection has done to his daughter's life he would definitely be more sympathetic to Dev and genuinely help him because Bijoy is the way to Sona.

So with this dev will get the father's love. and a true family and afterwords bijoy and asha can help dev and sona to manage Ishu mata.
By the way Excellent post.

Grace, Chaaru and Itelidevara, Dev not picking up the call is more to do with what Sonakshi told him than his promise. When Dev made the promise, it was just he and Suhana there. Sonakshi is not aware of this promise. Dev as shown is insecure regarding his place in Suhaana's life. When he asked regarding Jothin's place in Suhaana's life, what Sonakshi told him was that Jothin was integral part of Suhaan's life, but he is not. That he is disposable.

Before he could come to terms with that, again in yesterday's episode, Sonakshi said that Dev was not good for anything, if he did one thing right, he would do the next thing wrong and ended by saying that Suhaana would never forgive him if anything happened to her baaba, who according to her is the best baaba. But when Dev was introduced to Suhaana by Sonakshi, Suhaana said that father for her meant someone like baaba. Here Sonakshi said that he is not like him, which Bijoy too said during haldi ceremony, that he cannot be a good father to Suhaana. Suhaana also has said multiple times that "her paapa is better than her imagination, but her mumma is the best".

All this has created a fear in Dev's mind. He feels as much as he needs Soha, she doesn't need him. That she doesn't miss him. Hence he came back to Golu whom he knew would need him. When Sonakshi said those things she was being BD rather than SM. There is one dialogue from the movie ghajini that I like. Amir Khan says it in the speech to his employees. It goes something like this -- "main karsaktha hoon is confidence, main hi karsaktha hoon is over confidence". Right now Sonakshi is going by "main hi karsakthi hoon" that is why I am the best mom over confidence.

I think this is where Bijoy asking Asha if he was a good husband and father and Suhaana calling Sonakshi world's best mother comes to play. Also Bijoy asking if he made any mistakes as a father is also very important as he feels he did not do anything wrong by separating Sonakshi from Dev nor he has done any mistake as a father.

It is Sonakshi who has been telling that Suhaana doesn't really need him in her life to Dev. Dev doesn't really know what Suhaana really feels about him or that she misses him. This is what is causing him to feel so insecure as he feels that Suhaana doesn't need him. That she is going to go away leaving him.

This is what needs to change and I think it will change. Till now Suhaana has questioned Dev, but not Sonakshi. Not really. But is Sonakshi prepared when Suhaana will say that her paapa is world's best paapa and she is not best mumma anymore. Will Sonakshi be able to answer the "whys" that Suhaana is going to ask regarding Dev in the future.

Hopefully I have conveyed what I wanted to say. Sorry if it is not structured. 😃

Shaavi
As usual wonderful analysis regarding Dev's mindset. It looks so convincing always when you present your point.

Like you said Dev was driven to a state by Sonakshi where he is so confused regarding his position in Soha's life. Sonakshi is going over board by declaring Dev as a bad father in comparison with her father perfect Bijoy Bose. Recents incidents at Bose House made her lose her sense of reasoning it seems.
Any one in Dev's place will certainly get demoralised especially when he is the lone warrior standing against all odds.He is clueless whether Soha loves him and if so how intense her love is since Jatin is in the picture already .

You are right he came away to be with himself,be with Golu and get back his energy and zeal to win Soha's heart.I hope he will be focussed and undeterred to achieve his purpose despite Sona's discouraging words and misplaced accusations.

Yes. I also wish to hear from Soha " My father is the best. "

The idea that Dev doesn't have anything of substance to contribute to relationships is being built up a lot; Sona's words, that everyone falls for his charm and then regrets it, just as she is regretting it now, replayed in his head as he leaned against the headboard. This is exactly what Vicky told Bijoy as well, and the expression on Vicky's face when he watched Dev cuddle with Golu spoke volumes about how much he resented Dev's facility with people. Heart of hearts, I think Sona too is a little bit resentful of how easy it has been for Dev to assimilate into her family (I wish she would give herself more credit for how different the Dixits and the Boses are, but that is a different story), and conversely, how lightly he seems to be taking it, allowing Bijoy to fall sick on his watch. That is where the line about behaving so irresponsibly even after becoming a papa came from.

Dev's appraoch to relationships is very distinct, which is why he is able to sneak his way into people's hearts so quickly. He makes people feel special by sharing himself with them in a very intense way. That is how Sona fell in love with him, and now Soha as well. However, the flip side, as Sona pointed out (though in a bitter way), is that he sets the bar very high at the outset and fails to match those expectations. When you are the object of Dev's affections, at that moment there is no greater, more exhilirating feeling, but it can be equally frustrating when you have to wait through periods of him lavishing that singleminded focus on someone else. Sona didn't even mind this; she loved watching Dev be Dev, no matter who it was with. The one thing she never wanted was have to demand that focus from Dev when she needed it, something that Ishwari's incessant demands necessitated. This, I feel is what Dev never understood, exactly why Sonakshi grew so disappointed with him. What Sonakshi never understood is that Dev doesn't fail to give you his focus because he cares about the other person more, but rather when he feels you need him less.

And that is why his slipping away to IN for a few hours yesterday had such a profound effect. Sonakshi implied clearly that he was disposable to her and to Soha, so he went to the person who he knew did need him at that moment: Golu. And the phone symbolism continues from the time Sona couldn't reach him when Bijoy was taking Soha to Kolkata. At that time, he trusted Sona's words implicitly -- that she had taken care of the problem -- and slept peacefully, certain in the knowledge that he was not needed. I saw that as an echo of the split and Sona coming back to IN with baby Soha. Dev was unreachable because he was so sure he wasn't needed. And I think it was no different in yesterday's episode. He did not fathom that Sona and Soha, who were so self-sufficient and who had Jatin to boot, would miss him in the short span of a few hours. Just as he was needed then, he was needed now, and Dev needs to stop taking Sona's words so literally at face value.

In all of this, the pleasant surprise was the inception of Sona's introspection. For the first time, I feel, she got an inkling of how much her words affect Dev; they don't just bounce of his back as she has always sort of assumed. It was really significant that she remembered telling him to screw the deal and get out of her house; she has spent all of these days trying her hardest to get under Dev's skin and now that she sees Soha's love for him, is horrified of her own potential success. Sona often weaponises her words in defense, and the way I saw it, she is beginning to see how powerful they really are. I swear, only these two could make such a huge realisation out of the fact that telling someone to "get out" might actually result in them leaving.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts kindly.

Yesterday was jam-packed with profound conversations and introspections. Really appealed to the DQ's heartstrings that were demanding dard-e-dil since Friday.

Sonakshi says that her father is the best, Bijoy on the other hand is questioning if he is a good father or not. What that is meant to put across is that even though all of us are imperfect, for a daughter, her dad is always a hero. Just like Dev is for Golu (Like me, Vicky does very little for Golu's heart too!) & Soha and Bijoy is for Sona.

And the much talked about dialogue (I copied it from Suchi's blog) "Hum ek doosre ko blame karne mein kabhi der nahi karte, agar der karte hain to ek doosre ko samajhne mein karte hain'.

Humaara rishta hi aisa hai, toh agar tumhe kisiko blame karna hai na, iss rishtey ko blame karo"

What this conveys is that even though Dev & Sonakshi were very much in love with the other and their intentions were always right. However, they failed to put their marriage (rishta) above everything. They were not selfish enough to defend it from the external forces. Like Asha said to Bijoy, Asha and Bijoy decided to place paramount importance to their marriage. Unlike Devakshi, whose rishta was the weakest link in their lives!

Later in the episode we see an awesome exemplar of how partners should complement each other. Soha wanted to hear a bed-time story and Dev wasn't around. Sonakshi tried but her story wasn't fun. (By the way, Sonakshi ko Dev kee "stories" sune bina neend nahi aatee????). So, in Dev's absence, Sonakshi had to deliver Dev's story to make it worthwhile for Suhana. As much as dads are supermen, sometimes they are stuck too. As much as love is magical (aka Soha's fingers have magic, yet her dad was unreachable), sometimes love needs nurturing too. That is when a tough nut of a relationship makes through tough times. Like Asha said they couldn't even do this for 7 days (i.e. they couldn't even make it last more than 5 months, let alone for a lifetime!)

As we saw in the first Devakshi encounter... It does not matter if the mistake is 70:30 or 50:50 or 10:90.In a relationship, sometimes one partner takes on more and other times the other partner does. Only then the relationship survives the winds of change that get thrown at it left, right and centre.

@Geena: That was an amazing analysis of the Boses' family dynamic, especially the relationship between Sona and Bijoy. It was so touching to watch yesterday, how quickly Bijoy's slight change of behaviour towards Dev percolated to Sonakshi with her apology. When she found out that Dev hadn't stolen the jewellery, there was no inkling of remorse for having suspected him, but rather a direct jump to the next accusation and greivance, that he had lied. Today it was very different. Bijoy got Dev off the hook for the drinking fiasco and even said that he had enjoyed himself so much after a long time. That little gesture gave Sona permission to put down her weapons and stop fighting, and extend an olive branch to Dev. That in turn had a profound effect on Dev, where he was able to share his honest feelings about his mother taking those sleeping pills, and show openly how much he empathised with Sona. Bijoy needs to realise how much power he has over Sona, and Sona needs to realise her power over Dev.

This is the way it always should have been, but instead of making Dev his protege, and teaching him how to treat his daughter well, Bijoy made him the adversary and "protected" his daughter from Dev when he failed to measure up. Similarly, Dev made Bijoy the adversary after leap and thought he had to defeat him to win Sona and Soha for himself.

Men and their misplaced machismo, I tell you.
