ONE RAINY DAY ...

Chapter 6:

Sona meanwhile got into her apartment and sat down on the sofa. She held her head in her hands and cried. The heavy rains outside made her feel worse. She felt very sad and empty. Just then the doorbell rang. She wondered "who is it at this hour" and opened the door angrily. She saw that Dev was standing outside, soaked to the skin and he just said "I couldn't go away or let you go away this time Sonakshi without actually speaking to you. Can I come in please?" Sona didn't trust her voice and just nodded and moved side and let him in and closed the door.

Turning around after closing the door Sona looked at him and said "what were you doing in the rain Dev? You are soaking wet! You have just got of the hospital!". Dev looked at her and said "Why were you crying?"

Sona fumbled and said "I was not crying. I am just very tired. I have not slept properly for the last few days and today was very long and tiring. Come here I will give you a towel - at least dry yourself properly". Dev nodded and followed her into the bedroom and the first thing he noticed about the room was the dcor. This was so like Sona herself - warm, friendly and inviting. She handed him a towel and pointed to the bathroom and told him to take off his shirt as well. Sona said "Don't look so shocked. I will dry it for you. I suggest that you take a warm shower to prevent a cold". Dev did not say anything and took the towel from her hands and unbuttoned his shirt and handed it over to her. Sona blushed and looked away. She took the shirt and went out. She put the shirt in the dryer and went about making two cups of hot tea. By then the shirt was dried. She just ironed it quickly and went back to the bedroom and kept it on the bed and quietly went out closing the door softly behind her.

After about ten minutes, Dev came out of the bathroom actually feeling good after the shower. He put on his shirt which Sona had left on the bed. He was about to turn when he saw an album on the bedside table. Out of curiosity he picked it up and opened it. It had pictures of them clicked over the six months they were together. He could make out from the dog eared album that she had looked through it everyday. He sighed and put it back and went to the living room. He found sitting on one of the comfortable chairs, leaning back and her eyes closed. He saw that she had made two cups of tea and had also laid out the dinner from the brown paper bag for both of them to share. When he saw Sona, he was filled with an overwhelming need to just hold her in a bone crushing hug and protect her from the rest of world. She looked so vulnerable and frail. He moved closer when suddenly she opened her eyes and saw him. She smiled and told him "I have made some tea. Lets share the food".

Dev sat down next to her and picked up the mug of steaming tea and took a sip. "lovely" he said and then added "But this is not what I came here for Sonakshi". Sona just looked up into his eyes and said "Then tell me". Dev took that as a positive sign and continued "Sona the last two years have taught me a lot. I know the way we broke up was not right. I was so wrong... I shouldn't have let you walk out of my life. You were... no you are the best thing that ever happened to me. I want to tell you that there has not been a single moment in the last two years that I have not thought of you". Sona felt the tears gathering in her eyes but she was quiet as she did not trust herself to speak.

Dev continued "I realised soon enough that without you my life has no meaning. Maa is also better now after a year of counselling. I wanted to call you and speak to you but honestly I have not had the courage to do that. Do you know why? It is not just because I was so ashamed of the way I behaved but also because I was scared that I would find out that you have someone else in your life. So like an ostrich I thought I would be better off not knowing that. See but fate and destiny brought us face to face again. I don't want to let go off this chance once again Sona. I will come straight to the point. I love you Sona. I promise that I will never let go of us ever again. Are you willing to give me another chance... us another chance?"

Sona was stunned and did not reply anything. But this time she let her tears flow silently. Dev was worried as he was wondering if he has hurt her again.. and he just said " I don't want to force you Sona into making a decision tonight. I just wanted to tell you whats on my mind". He then added "I would also understand if you have someone else in your life. After all its difficult not to love you!"

Sona still continued to be silent and Dev got worried. Hesitatingly he went down on his knees in front of Sona and took her hands in his. He held her chin and made her look up and wiped her tears flowing down her cheeks and said softly "I did not want to make you cry Sona - please don't cry your tears are precious". Sona looked at him and finally spoke "Dev I love you a lot and I have missed you a lot in the last two years. It was very difficult for me to keep away from you. I know when Aunty was not well what you must have gone through all alone. Believe me I wanted to be there by your side"

She continued "I was so scared of being rejected by you..again.. that I did not call you either. You know the reason I moved away from Delhi was that everything in Delhi reminded me of you and how miserable I was without you. I would look at our pictures everyday before I sleep. These two years have taught me one thing and that is true love is very hard to find and true love is not easy. I am sure we will face many hurdles and I am willing to fight all the hurdles ..only if you are there by my side holding my hands". Dev was so overwhelmed hearing her words, he just got up and gave Sona a tight hug. She started crying again and he could feel her tears on his shirt when he just moved back a bit a bit looked at her face and said "Please don't cry anymore. I am there with you now and for ever". He ran his fingers over her hair trying of calm her. Sona stopped crying. Dev moved closed and kissed her softly on her lips. Sona closed her eyes and softly and shyly kissed him back. Soon the kiss deepened and Dev just held her closer. After a while they moved away, both breathless. Taking deep breaths Dev just held her hands and took her to the window in the living room. He told her "See the storm is over and the sky is clearing. Lets watch the sun rise over a new day together". Sona brought a comforter and came a sat down next to him on the floor. Dev hugged her and covered them both, they leaned against the wall and comfortably keeping their heads on each other shoulders watched the sun dawn over a new day...
