ONE RAINY DAY ...

Chapter 3:

Sonakshi moved the curtain and picked up the basic reports and readings kept on the bedside table and finally looked up at the patient and she was shocked. She had to hold the rails of the bed and she told herself "It cannot be Dev.. Oh god".

Before she could react, Dr. Sharma came back and asked her "Did u look at the reports - why are you looking so pale? Do you know him?". Sonakshi just nodded and said "He is the son of an old patient of mine from Delhi.. that's the connect". Dr. Sharma continued "Then its even better that you know him. We managed the exclusive suite on the 4^th floor and we will transfer him now. I need you to help me now especially since you seem to know the family. Can you get his sister to the suite on the fourth floor. I will go with the Nurse and attendants". Sonakshi agreed and came out the emergency room and took and deep breath and looked around. She spotted Ria standing in a corner, nervousness and fear evident from her posture and Tina was standing next to her. As Sona walked towards them, Ria looked up from her phone and almost screamed "Sona di ...you are here! Oh thank god!" Saying that she just rushed to Sona and gave her a bone crushing hug and said "I am so happy to see you. But Bhaiya is unconscious and he has been brought here. I am so scared I don't know what to do". Sona returned the hug and gently moved back and said "Don't worry I am there with you. Don't worry we are taking him to the room upstairs. Here you come with me". Saying that she gently led Ria and Tina to the lift at the end of the corridor and the went to the suite on the fourth floor.

As they opened the door, Dev was brought in too and was laid on the bed. Ria was crying and she asked "whats happened to him. We all have been telling him to not work so hard but he just doesn't pay heed and see whats happened to him". Sona calmly replied "Don't worry nothing will happen to him - he is just tired and exhausted. He is in very good hands - Dr. Sharma is one of our best and most senior doctors". Dr. Sharma came forward and said "We have done some tests and expect the resports by the morning. Since its already 11 PM. Lets keep him under observation. Anyway we have already started the IV. I will ask one of the sisters to monitor Mr. Dixit's blood pressure every one hour. Don't worry he will be better by the morning. Let him rest now". Sonakshi said "Thanks Dr. Sharma. I will stay with Ria here. I will keep you informed in case of an emergency. Thanks so much". "Are you sure Dr. Bose" Dr. Sharma asked. "Yes no problems - I will be here" Sona said.

When Dr. Sharma left, Sona asked Ria and Tina if they had eaten. When they said no, she sent them forcefully to the cafeteria downstairs and asked them to eat saying "You need to have the energy. You cant fall sick now so please eat and come. I am here with Dev till then.". When Ria and Tina went of the room, Sona got up and sat next to Dev. He was in deep sleep and oblivious that he was in the hospital and not on the bed in the hotel. He looked very tired and there were dark circles under his eyes. He had also lost a lot of weight. Sona hesitated and just touched his face. She thought "Why are you doing this to yourself Dev. Its obvious that we are sailing in the same boat and you have also not been able to move on in life. I love you so much. I wanted to meet you again. But not like this". Sona felt tears gathering in her eyes and quickly wiped them away when she felt the door opening. She simply pretended to adjust the IV and went and sat on the sofa. Ria came back alone and told Sona "I sent Tina back - she will come back in the morning. Sona di you will be there here with me na". Sona smiled and said "Of course, come and sit down here next to me". Ria sat down next to her and smiled at Sona and said "Thanks Sona di".

It was around 5 AM when Dev opened his eyes. He looked around surprised at the dimly lit room and then realised he was on a hospital bed. He pulled out the IV and tried to get up and looked around. Hearing the sound, Sona who had fallen asleep on the sofa got up quickly and went to Dev and told him "Hi Dev. How are you feeling now? Please don't try and get up" and she calmly proceeded to fix the IV again. Dev was now stumped "Sonakshi - what am I doing in the hospital and how are you here. Am I imagining or are you really here?".

Sonakshi just smiled and said "I am really here. You passed out in the hotel room - Ria panicked and brought you here and I work at this hospital Dev. The rest we can discuss in the morning when you feel better". She pointed out to Ria sleeping on the sofa.

Dev was tired and confused. He just nodded and went back to sleep holding Sona's hand tightly. Sona looked at the hand entwined in his tight grip and suddenly felt so sad that she was overwhelmed. She slowly removed her hand and went back to the sofa.

At seven AM she woke up Ria and told her that Dev had woken up in the morning once and that his vitals were steadying now. She also told here "I suggest that you go and freshen up and the hotel and come back by 9 AM and then I will go as I need to attend some patients here". Ria said "I don't know how to thank you Sona di. I will be back soon".

The morning doctor came to check on Dev and then some attendants came to clean him up and change his clothes. Sona excused herself then and went and had a cup of coffee in the Doctors station. She came back and found Dev awake and propped up against the pillows. He looked at her as soon as she opened the door and asked her "How are you Sonakshi?". Sona heard the words and immediately understood as to the unsaid question - do you miss me as much as I miss you and how are you managing without me in your life? Sona gave a small smile and said "I am fine Dev. How are you doing? Still working so hard. You should really slow down a bit". Dev looked at her in the eyes and said "I need some motivation in my life Sonakshi to survive everyday... for the last two years I had to find solace in my work only and you know why!" Dev continued to just look at her intently and his glance was so sharp and piercing that Sona was forced to look up and they continued to just look at each other without saying a word, drinking in each other's sight as if they were trying to make up for the two years that they never set sight on each other.

The spell only broke when Dr. Sharma walked in and asked "Good morning Mr. Dixit. How are you feeling today?". Dev just smiled and looking at Sona just said "Never felt better!"
