Since I started watching the show, I heard Dev was referred to as Shravan Kumar.
The story of Shravan Kumar, is that he devoted his life to his ageing parents and took care of them at their old age. That's an example of a great son.
He never married because he already had responsibility of his parents. That's an example of a considerate and sensitive human being.
Dev is not Shravan Kuman because he is neither a great son nor a considerate and sensitive human being.
He and his mother, according to him has an unique relationship. They don't have to be like anyone else. Based on their action the interpretation is that they don't have to give a eff about anyone else as long as they are focused on each other.
Why bring another woman between this unique relationship? Where is the space for anyone else, let alone a wife? Who wants to live their life on crumbs? A woman leaves her family behind to share her life with her husband, and here she is provided whatever crumbs are left over after his mother takes the lion's share and his family takes the rest and some people expect that woman to just be content with that?
Let's be honest here. This is how the world works. Parents raise kids, kids grow up and get married and create their own family and the cycle continues.
Both side of the family through the couple becomes blended family who stand by each other through thick and thin.
Sona very easily accepted Dev's sisters as her sisters. She spends her time bonding with them. So they come to her for advice and their problems.
Did Dev spent any time with Saurabh beyond around family when Sona is there? Why would Saurabh ever consider sharing his problems with Dev?
Sona accepted Ishwari as her mother and gave her all due respect. Even if Asha told her to treat Ishwari like a stranger, Sona won't ever hurt Dev's mother.
But Dev? He did it in a heatbeat. Why would anyone consider Dev to be part of their family? He only belongs heart and soul to Ishwari.
Then why marry? Where is any space in his life for a wife? Hell, he doesn't even have space in his life for a cat, let alone another human being.
Marriage is a social custom where two people want to share their life and family together.
Otherwise, casual flings is also a possibility these days as well as convenient where two people can continue to have their separate life and just come together for sex.
In that arrangement, nothing has to change in their personal life including their family dynamics and lifestyle. There was absolutely no need for Dev to ever get married since Sona has to take a crowbar to pry her place in his home and his priorities constantly which is exhausting for anyone.
I am sorry. When a man hurts a woman for the sake of his mother, he is not a good human being and thus a FAILURE of her own upbringing.
Let me give you an example.
A mother raises two sons. One day she tells them that the begger on the street offends her. So they should go and throw her out of the city.
One son says no and tells her with all due respect that she has taught him to respect human being regardless their social status and that's why he can't hurt an innocent person just because she is bothering her with no fault of her own.
The other son goes and throws the lady out of the city and comes to the mother saying that whatever she wants, he will do it without considering whom he has to hurt.
Who do you think was the better son and better human being? Who do you think was an example of a good parenting?
A parents' job is not to create mindless slaves who runs around doing their bidding, their job is to create compassionate and caring human beings who respect everyone whether they are related by blood with them or not.
Ishwari is a failure as a mother and Dev is a failure as a son and worse, he is a failure as a husband and a compassionate human being.
Shravan Kumar could not do justice to a woman, so he didn't marry. That's fair and selfless. Dev is selfish because he wants just a woman on tap to use when he wants her and sideline her when he doesn't or she comes between his family matters. That's a shitty example of a human being and a husband.
And I don't know why would any woman want to put up with that.
EDITED: Wow, I must be psychic. I wrote a post on selfishness and Dev proved just how much selfish he can be. To sum up Dev's definition of love based on today's episode.
He wants his room just the way he wants it.
He wants his life just the way his mother wants.
He wants every single ritual, custom, status quo of his family continue to be the same.
But he also wants an invisible woman when he wants to get laid and understanding enough to give up her family, her identity, her dreams, her happiness, her life to be at his beck and call at his service...
In exchange he will generously let her have her career and a space at the corner of his room. He will even throw in some romance in private.
Really, what an epic husband and awesome love story...
It's an example of just how much a person can love their own self that they don't even care about anyone else.
He deserves the best lover of self award!!! Let's give him a standing ovation..
Dev, I also have a prize for you. My wish from the bottom of my heart is to your company shares become the worth of your words and your promises... And we all know how much they are worth!!!
