SONAKSHI's POV

"madam yeh aapke liye hai" I looked up from my file to see satish our driver holding out a packet with a red tulip peeping out of the packet...

"aap isse yahn rakh dijiye" I said asking him to place the packet on my work station!! As soon as the man was out of my cabin I opened the packet and took the red tulip out it was small and I touched the waxy petals feeling the natural smoothness when the memory of the first time he had given me tulips came floating back...

FLASHBACK 5 MONTHS AGO

"happy birthday shona" maa and baba wished me as I came downstairs for breakfast!! It was my day, but somehow it seemed really meaningless, may be because the one human who added the colors to my rainbow, the man who made my day bright was missing... I was pulled out of my reverie, when the taxi driver prompted me to pay and leave.. I walked into the hospital and followed my regular routine, and walked in my cabin to find a bunch of red flowers, on walking close to them I realized they were not just any flowers, they were a bunch of fully bloomed red tulips... I picked them up and twisted them around they were rare, and in full bloom!! I felt the waxy petals and smelled them only to discover they had no smell!! I was still marveling at the prefect color the shape when my eyes fell on the note kept next to them!! I picked it up and flipped it open..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WIFEY

I know yeh koi tarika nahi hota apni wife ko wish krne ka, but mai shayad yeh face to face krna deserve nahi krta, iss liye yeh note likh raha hoon!!

Maine bahut socha, ki mai tumhe aisa kya doon jo tumhe yeh ehsaas kra sake ki how much I miss you today or tum meri zindigi mein kya maine rakhti ho!! So I read somewhere, that in the early 19^th century to represent undying love a red tulip was given... so ab mai tumse itna pyaar krta hoon ki 1 kaafi nahi hai issiliye ek bunch bheja hai.. hope tumhe samaj aagaya hoga what I mean!!

I smiled and shook my head who writes conditions applied on a note?? I kept it aside and looked at the packet that accompanied the bunch!! I opened it, sheer out of curiosity and found a pair of short shorts and an oversized off shoulder top, I could not believe even after all these he had the nerves to send me these!! In a fit of rage I threw them aside and took the note to kajal who was busy with a patient I waited outside her cabin, and soon as the woman came out the door I rushed in, on seeing me she got up her chair ran and hugged me a happy birthday I smiled and said "kuch baat krni thi" she motioned me to be seated and took the seat next to mine and nodded "dev ne yeh bheja hai" and like a teenager, who proudly shows off her love letters,

I passed my note to my best friend who read it and with a bright smile said "kya socha... mere hisaab se tujhe jana chahiye.. kya pata tumhare beech ki problems sort out ho jaye!!" I was reluctant at first but then agreed, so I texted him but he didn't reply!! Later at around 7 came his reply change and meet me outside... I picked up the clothes he had given me and nervously put them on checking myself in the mirror I made my way out... I saw him wearing a pair of matching denims and a t-shirt he looked really handsome.

I stopped in front of him and he pulled me in a hug and said "happy birthday sonakshi!!" and after a pause continued "thank you mujhe apna thoda sa waqt dene ke liye!! And yeah isse pehle tum pucho, mai tumhe aaj ke kuch rules bata deta hoon... aaj ke liye tum meri biwi nahi ho.. sirf meri friend ho.. issi liye if you wish to take off those Bengali bangles you are free to do so... " he was oddly chirpy and I complied to his demands he motioned me to sit in the car and I agreed... He got in and said "yaad hai tumne mujhe kaha tha ki tumne kabhi koi fun nahi kia... so now's the time to have fun!!! So fasten your seat belts we are going on a fun ride" and he winked I felt my cheeks flushed and he stood true to his words driving like a maniac and singing all my favorite songs on the top of our lungs we made our way to a posh pub cum bowling zone... And the rest of the evening was spent playing bowling and drinking, it was the first time I was drinking alcohol so we kept it to minimum... and as they say the rest is history!!! So finally when it was 10:30 pm I suggested we should get home he guided me inside the car, and I was shocked how alcohol had not affected him at all, he was still sane and my head was banging... we drove in silence, and as we reached home he helped me get out and I held him for support and felt his arms go around me as he stabilized the already stable situation!!!

When I tried to push away, his hold strengthen and as he leaned in I blurted "aapne maa se baat ki??" everything went cold it was like one moment it was all warm and fuzzy and the next poof its cold again!!when he didn't say anything I closed my eyes shook my head and said "wish mai sab bhul sakti!!" tears threatening to fall, I pushed him away and walked off.. I had the answer!!

END OF FLASHBACK

I sat down on my chair picked up my packet and checked for any thing more and my eyes landed on a neatly folded paper, I picked it up and flipped it open the sense of dj vu still fresh,

Meri Agra mein ek meet hai.. iss liye mujhe jana padh raha hai... sorry lekin mai already nikal chukka hoon varna tumse milke jata... I am going to miss you a lot...

I kept the note down and dialed dev, he picked up after second ring and said "hello" when I didn't reply he repeated "hello sona??" again I kept mum "mai janta hoon tum mujhse naaraz ho lekin agar aise rahogi toh meri meeting ka kya hoga"

so I said "yeh fair nahi hai... aapko pata tha aaj humien maa ke sath jana hai.. ab mai unhe kya kahungi..."

he just laughed and said "maa ko maine bata dia hai... unhone kaha ki koi baat nahi" I rolled my eyes and he said "mai koshish karta hoon raat ko late vapis aane ki.."

as soon as the words were out I said "nooo raat ko nhai dev, who jagah raat ko travel krne ke liye safe nahi hai... and akele toh bilkul bhi nahi.. aap free hone ke baad kal subha nikal jana"

he listened then in a small voice said "mujhe tumhare bina neend nahi aati"

"aacha toh itne dino se kaise manage kr rahe the?" I asked him

"sleeping pills..." he said in the same small voice

"dev aapko apni koi parvah hai hi nahi... yeh kya tareeka hai" I reprimanded him...

" aacha baba, mai samjh gaya, ab tum vapis aa gayi ho na ab mujhe sleeping pills ki zaroorat nahi padegi" he said conviction ringing...

I just smiled and said "aacha dhayana rakhna or bets of luck!!" we disconnected the call and picked up the tulip sighing, I loved him and this was the best reminder!!
