Ejaz Khan talks about his film 'Mirabai not Out' and leaving marriage plans to destiny

Television hottie Ejaz Khan (of 'Kavyanjali' and 'Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka' fame), who was earlier seen in films 'Zameen' and 'Kuch Naa Kaho' before he made it big on the small-screen, has now signed a film opposite Mandira Bedi in 'Mirabai Not Out'.

"Honestly, I had never even dreamt that I would be an actor in the first place. After making my mark on TV, thanks to Ektaa Kapoor, I'm now shooting for this Chandrakant Kulkarni directorial," say Ejaz.

Interestingly, while Mandira is cast as a cricket-crazy fan, Ejaz plays someone who dislikes cricket. "Yes, that's right. I play Dr Arjun Avasthi, who is disinterested in cricket. It's a gripping track which has a romantic angle." He adds, "Even off-screen I hate cricket and prefer to play and watch all other games like hockey, basketball and swimming. So this role seems tailor-made for me," says Ejaz, who hit it off with Mandira from day one. "Besides being a wonderful person, Mandira is a fantastic actor to work with. She will surely impress audiences with her deglam looks as Mirabai in certain portions of the movie," assures the star, who has not been signing on more TV shows post 'Nimmo'.

Is Ejaz, who few believe bears a resemblance to Shashi Kapoor, pursuing films aggressively now? "Being compared to the handsome Shashi Kapoor is an honour. In fact, several of my fans feel so and so does my dad." He adds, "Presently, I'm doing only one film. It's not that I am shunning TV. Since I'm a Balaji actor, I am open to their offers."

Though he's said to be very close to Anita, his 'Kavyanjali' co-actor Ejaz is undecided about their marriage plans. "I have never planned anything in my life. Destiny does it for me. So I don't know when my marriage will take place - next year, next month or even this weekend! Life should also have some suspense," he signs off with an impish smile.

Small screen star seduced bai film

Eijaz Khan abandons television for the big screen with Meerabai, Not Out
Subhash K Jha

Eijaz Khan
Eijaz Khan is now shooting for his first full-fledged feature, Meerabai, Not Out, with another television celeb, Mandira Bedi.

"It's not as if I'm unhappy with what I've got from television. I just want to explore another medium," says the soft-spoken Khan.

Eijaz made his big-screen debut as a junior artiste in Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahta Hoon. He was also an item boy paired with Amrita Arora in the 'Dilli Ki Sardi' song in Rohit Shetty's Zameen. He has another item number coming up with his girlfriend Natassha in Meghna Gulzar's Just Married.

"I wonder if Amrita even remembers me," laughs Eijaz. "Coincidentally I found fame with another Amrita (Singh) on television in Kavyanjali… But for now, I'm out of that scene."

Eijaz suddenly found that he had free time on hand and hence, decided to shoot the film. "My last serial for Balajee telefilms was Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka, which wrapped up last week. So I'm done with television until Ekta finds another serial for me to do. That's why I had the time to do Meerabai, Not Out. I'm supposed to do her Dubai serial Khwahish. But I don't know if I'll be able to finish this film in time," concludes Eijaz.

Ekta Kapoor's Pink Party!

Why TV stars are in the 'pink' of health

Ekta Kapoor's party at her house on Friday night was buzzing. Not surprising, considering everybody from the television industry was present. Never mind that Ekta herself walked in at 1.30 am! The dress code being pink or blue — or both — the telly buddies came dressed in these shades, all ready to have a blast till the wee hours of the morning. Right from brothers Ronit and Rohit Roy to Nikkhil Arya to Akashh deep Saigal, they were all there. Shweta Tiwari made a rare appearance. The very-much-in-love couple Eijaz Khan and Anita Hasanandani were seen cosying up. Gauri Pradhan was dressed in blue but she ensured hubby Hiten Tejwani wore pink, although reluctantly!

Anita Hassanandani, formerly known as Natassha began her career as a model, working in advertisements for Sunsilk, Boroplus and other renowned brands. She made her television debut in 2001 in Ekta Kapoor's highly successful serial Kabhi Souten Kabhi Saheli. During the serial she auditioned for Balaji Telefilms' Kucch To Hai, and her sweet innocent look bagged her the role of Tashu. Hassanandani also worked in Krishna Cottage — a supernatural thriller and Koi Aap Sa. But this actress is best known for her role of Anjali in the popular serial Kkavyanjali. Apart from her mainstream hindi performances, she has also worked in a few South Indian movies.

The 25-year-old has now taken a break from shooting as she has been continously working for the last two years. Hassanandani is a resident of Khar and was very happy when a gym opened there. Once she got started on a regular exercising routine, she felt a positive change in her life. A simple girl, Hassanandani is good at heart and sports a easy-going nature. She says, "Be it a film star or layman, every one should workout as it enhances the quality of life." Her mantra of fitness is simple — eat right, workout every day, sleep well and drink lots of water.

THE WORKOUT

During the first one month Hassanandani followed an upper body and lower body split for foundation development. The second month onwards, she was put on superset workouts where she performed two different variations for two different body parts in a row to improve her speed, agility and attain a firmer body.

Supersets for upper body parts

• Flat double press
• Barbell rows
• Incline double press
• Machine seated rows
• Clean and press
• Double pullover
• Double bicep curls
• Reverse dips.

Supersets for lower body parts

• Leg extensions
• Squats
• Leg press
• Lunges
• Leg curls
• Standing calf raises
• Stiff leg dead lifts
• Seated calves.

Hassanandani also does abs every alternate day and 30 minutes of cardio thrice a week.

THE DIET

Hassanandani is not a fussy eater and eats non-vegetarian food. However, she admits to having a big sweet tooth and loves eating chocolates, sweets, ice-creams and gelatos, which is the biggest hurdle for her in achieving her fitness goals.

11am (breakfast): Egg whites and brown bread

1:30-2 pm (lunch): 2 rotis, rice, chicken and vegetables

Evening (snack): Brown bread sandwich/ vegetables with egg whites

Mid-evening snack: fruits

Dinner: Same as lunch.

Hiten Tejwani's new record

The actor will be seen in three primetime dailies

SUBHASH K JHA

Ekta Kapoor's blue-eyed boy Hiten Tejwani, who recently made an attempt at a movie career in Manish Jha's Anwar, is back on home ground. But Hiten seems to have bitten far more than he can chew. Setting an all-new record in the television industry, Tejwani will be acting in three daily soaps.
It's not unusual for the over-worked brigade of TV actors to step on the accelerator. But to play the lead in three soaps Monday-Friday is a bit excessive.
Hiten, who describes himself as a certifiable workaholic, is certain he can pull it off. "See, I've been doing Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi for many years now. I keep going in and out of other soaps that Ekta asks me to do. The two new soaps I'm doing are Karam Apna Apna and Kasauti Zindagi Kay." While Karam… came to Hiten after Iqbal Khan decided to quit, Kasauti… is now Hiten's primetime pride after Cezanne Khan decided to quit television.
Any bad blood with the two Khan colleagues whom he's replacing in the two dailies? "None at all!"he says. "In this industry, actors are always interchangeable. When you are shooting for years, you are bound to get restless and move on. That doesn't mean the soap stops."
Hiten admits he doesn't have enough time for even his wife Gauri Pradhan. "Fortunately, she's from the TV industry and understands the pressures of the business. My big advantage here is that all three soaps are with with the same production house. So I'll be happy to let them co-ordinate my dates. I can handle three dailies." The big question is, can viewers handle it?

Voting for a change

It's again time to choose the corporator of your area in the up-coming mucipal polls. Pressing issues like bad roads, poor drainage, parking space and a host of such problems that rattle in our minds can be solved if we come out and vote for the right candidate. With the ballot war nearing its D day, we ask our TV celebs about their participation in the elections and the issues that motivate them to vote.

Eijaz Khan

I guess I will vote on that day. Though the fact is that polling is a process that allows you to choose the best among the worst. I will put my vote for the candidate who seems keener on delivering results than political speeches.

'It's high time I get back to work'

Back to Section Stories
Honeymoon over, Iqbal is ready to work

Ram Kamal Mukherjee

Back after his brisk honeymoon, Iqbal Khan is ready to face the arc lights again. His was one the most low profile weddings that took place two weeks ago, in Mumbai. Incidentally, the actor didn't invite anyone from the industry and he has no regrets for the same. He says, "I don't like to bring my personal life in public. Even Sneha is not fond of shor-sharaba and I think we like it that way."

Iqbal Khan
Immediately after marriage Iqbal and Sneha went to Maldives for their honeymoon. The actor enjoyed every moment of it. "Maldives is a very romantic place and we enjoyed to the hilt," he says.

The actor has not been following any television soap, since the time he left Balaji's Karam Apna Apna. "I don't sit and watch television on a regular basis, but I have been told that Yash (Tonk) is doing a fantastic job," he says. The actor is now seriously looking for good offers. "It's high time I get back to work. I need to buy a house. I have started meeting people and will soon be in a position to make an announcement," he says.

The actor doesn't want to try his hand in films. "My debut film Funtoosh was not a pleasant experience as far as the box-office results were concerned. I think television has given me the recognition as an actor and I shall never quit TV for films," he says.

So, will he be meeting Ekta Kapoor again? "I never had any problem with Ekta. I didn't quit Balaji on a bad note. So, I am sure that the day I want to work with Ekta, she will sign me," he argues.

The actor was recently featured in Zee TV's Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai, but he feels that it was too early. "It's just beginning of my career and I have a way to go as a performer. But meeting old pals and my school teacher after ages was great fun," he says.

Ten tana ten ten!
Hold on TV, hello again films. Anita Hassanandani signs Dus Kahaaniyan

Filmmaker Sanjay

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta's Dus Kahaaniyan, which binds ten different short fables together, continues to make news. After a long wait, Gupta has finalised the lead girl for one of the stories that had been stuck. Anita Hassanandani of Kavyanjali has been signed to work with Nana Patekar and Rohit Roy in Gubbare.

Says an excited Anita, "It's been my dream to work with Nana Patekar. He's a brilliant actor. The concept of Gubbare is also very interesting. I play this simple, girlnext-door girl. I'm sure it will be fun." A popular face on television, Anita has taken a break from it to concentrate on films. "For two and half years, I was working around the clock. Even though I had only one serial (Kavyanjali), I didn't get time with my family So, I've taken an off for a year. I'll . be doing only films now." She adds, "I know whatever popularity I have is because of television, but I had to take this decision. TV was maddening." With free time on hand, she now wants to pursue her passions. "I want to take dance lessons. In fact, after Kavyanjali got over, I realized that I had a good amount of time on hands. So, I just lazed around, caught up on lost sleep.. and just had fun." Anita has also worked in over 15 South projects. "I really like the way the industry works there. I don't work in South movies because of money I do it, because so far I've . got fabulous roles," she exults.

Anita is known to be close to the Balaji camp. Rumours, though, keep filtering in on and off about their fall-out. "Ektaa (Kapoor) is a great friend, and more than that, I respect Shobhaji (Ektaa's mother) far too much to have any problems with the Kapoors," she ends.

Sumeet replaces Eijaz in Kwahish

Balalji's new show Kwahish has undergone a major shuffle. Eijaz Khan, who was to play the lead has opted out of the show. Replacing him would be Sumeet Sachdev aka Gautam of Kyunki fame.

When asked about the latest development Sumeet says, "I will be playing the lead protagonist, Kabir Khan in Kwahish. He's the son of a business tycoon in Dubai The show is targeted at the Urdu speaking audiences in the Middle East and West Asia. It's a very exciting role and I am preparing myself for it at the moment"

The story is set against a Muslim backdrop. Paired opposite him is the ravishing newcomer Priya Bhatheja, who plays Aafren Hussain, a law student in the show. In a turn of events, Aafreen has to shoulder family responsibility early and lands up a job with Kabir Khan. This is how the love story begins that later witnesses the trademark Balaji melodrama.

Adds a source from the unit, "Kwahish will entirely be shot in Dubai. Currently, we're shooting some small portions in Mumbai. In about a week, the whole unit will start the Dubai schedule."

Here's hoping that Kwahish helps Sumeet's sagging career. About two years back, the actor rose to fame as Tulsi's beta Gomzi, and was seen as the next hottie on the charts. But somehow, after the generation leap in the show, one hasn't seen his character develop further. Currently, Sumeet is also being seen in Karam Apnaa Apnaa.
