Chapter Four
Heer lay on her bed staring at the ceiling pondering over her life. Lallit Uncle had been so generous to let her stay in the house. Thinking about Lallit Uncle instantly brought a smile to her face, as he reminded her of her father, incredibly warm and giving. He treated her like a daughter and had even offered to solve all her financial problems. She herself chose to stay in the servant's quarter, not complaining in the slightest, her mind drifting to images of the sordid places she had lived in the past. The only reason she lived was for her sister, otherwise she would have broken down years ago. She knew that her life was incomplete, there was something lacking in her life which had led her to put up a barrier between her and the world. There were only a few people she felt she could trust, one being Lallit Uncle and the other being her sister Meher, for whom she would lay down her life. As she turned to her side her she brought her hand up to gaze at her index finger, which would painfully throb ever couple of minutes. Closing her lids gently, the last thing she thought of before letting sleep take over her were those crystal clear brown eyes that had stared into hers just hours ago.

'So is there any plan of coming back home then?' Prem asked his younger brother on the phone as he treaded to the kitchen. He laughed at the sound of a small groan on the other end of the line. 'Are things that bad?'
'You know I love her PB. I'm not coming home until I confess to her how I feel' he answered, and Prem shook his head. He did not understand how someone could be as foolish as to falling in love.
'Preet- You completed your degree two months ago and were supposed to be home by now, even Dad's been asking about your return!'
'I know Bhaiya, but I can't help it. She still has a year before she finishes her degree. I can't lose her so I have to tell her that I love her before I leave London. Help me PB, please?' pleaded Preet.
'You know that I like to stay miles away from this word love, so unfortunately I will be of no use to you' laughed Prem.
'I'm not talking about helping me with the confessing part Bhaiya, I know you will be of no help in that department!' he joked 'I am talking about you covering for me with Maa and Dad'
'What is that supposed to mean?' responded Prem.
'What is what supposed to mean?' Preet answered back nonchalantly.
'The part you said about me being no help in that 'department'! Do you really want me to come all the way to London and kick your butt?' initiated Prem, leading to both brothers falling into laughter instantly. Prem dropped on the sofa stretching his legs out across the length of the settee, thoroughly content as he listened to his brother delve into details of his lady love. Prem had decided to send Reena home early, knowing what a close call it had been earlier in the day. After ending the call and Prem decided to retire to his bedroom, stopping in his tracks as he passed the servant's quarter. He saw that the door had been left open and saw Heer peacefully sleeping inside. Strangely, he found himself remembering the way she had flinched at his touch as he had grabbed her hand earlier which, for some reason, intrigued him. A sudden urge to go inside her room filled him and he found himself walking forwards. Stopping and shaking his head, he suddenly retreated, wondering what was wrong with him. Beating the temptation, he walked upstairs to his room, thinking that a few hours sleep would do him some a good.

Gayatri walked into the kitchen, smiling as she watched Heer stir the pan. She went to stand next to Heer and put her hand on her shoulder. 'It smells great' she said warmly and Heer smiled. 'How are you finding it in our house?' asked Gayatri, 'I hope you have settled in well.'
Heer nodded, 'It feels just like home. I have settled in really well Aunty' she replied, and Gayatri gently touched her cheek. 'I would love for you to call me Maa. A daughter is the one thing I have always longed for' said Gayatri and Heer immediately felt tears blinding her eyes, which didn't go unnoticed by Gayatri who immediately kissed Heer's forhead and wiped her tears. 'There will be no crying in my house' she pointed and they both laughed.
'Heer, I need some things from the market, will you be able to go today and get them for me?' asked Gayatri and Heer straightaway nodded.
'Prem...Prem!!' called Gayatri and Heer suddenly felt the pace of her heartbeat quicken. She didn't understand why Prem was being called. As he entered the kitchen, looking striking in a white shirt, the sleeves rolled up and a red tie hanging loosely around his neck, Heer looked down at the floor, afraid to look up.
'Yes Maa?' Prem asked.
'Beta, can you take Heer to the market. I need her to get a few things for me and I don't think she will be able to carry it all by herself. So please can you take her in the car?' asked Gayatri. Prem looked at Heer for a moment before looking at his mother. 'Sure, no problem. I'll be outside waiting' he obeyed and left to get the car out.
Heer tried to protest, asserting that she would be able to cope on her own but Gayatri was having none of it. She placed the list in Heer's hand and dropped her to the door, waving her a goodbye. Heer apprehensively stepped outside and walked towards the car. She saw Prem waiting patiently in the car and sought to take a seat in the back of the car. As he noticed this, Prem turned his head to look at her. 'Hey- I am not your driver! Come sit at the front' Prem said, leaning over and opening the passenger door for her. Silently abiding, Heer took the seat next to Prem's, uncomfortably shifting in the seat. Detecting this, Prem furrowed his brows. The nervousness caused by his presence was evident by the way she fidgeted with her dupatta. It was not something he was accustomed to, especially since he was used to seeing women flirt and use all their power to impress him.
Deciding to spark up a conversation Prem spoke, 'How's your finger?' he asked, and she glanced at him for a split second and quickly looked down at her finger, hoping he had not noticed. 'It's much better now, thank you' she replied.
'Good' he said simply. The rest of the car journey was spent in silence, with both glancing at each occasionally and their eyes darting away immediately. On arrival at the market, Heer confidently went around to different stalls, negotiating on prices, with Prem following behind her, watching her every movement. Having bought all the things that Gayatri had asked for, Prem and Heer made their way back to his car.
'Do you really think you will be able to carry all those bags?' he smarted, staring at the countless bags that Heer held. Her mouth was open and her cheeks displayed a slight flush. 'It's okay, I can manage' she hesitated. 'Really? Because these strong arms are here for a reason' he pointed to his arms, and Heer's eyes lingered on them for a second, imagining how it would feel to have those arms around her waist, holding her close. Appalled at her thoughts, Heer shook her head, 'No, really, I can carry them,' resisted Heer. 'Fine, your wish' Prem said and went to lean casually against the car. Heer shambled forwards, juggling the bags between her arms, trying to keep hold of them with great effort. Prem watched her struggle with the bags and found a small grin spread across his face. Before Heer knew it, he was inches away from her, extending his arms forward to take the bags. 'I hate to interrupt all the fun that you were having with the bags, but I don't want you falling down and embarrassing yourself' he said cheekily and her jaw dropped. He laughed at her riled expression as he took the bags from her and put them in the boot of the car. He took a seat in the car and just stared at her out of the window, smirking, clearly enjoying himself. Trying not to show her fury, remembering that he was her boss, Heer took in a deep breath and took a seat in the front of the car. She crossed her arms and stared out of the window as he steered the car off the curb of the road and drove back home.
Eeeeeh, how was it? Hope you like it, made it kinda long, didn't I? Anyway, cannot wait to read your comments!! 😳
