Part 9
As Heer walked inside, she felt a bit better having let all that out. It felt as if a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders. Talking to Prem made her realize that Bauji wouldn't want her to be like this. He wouldn't want her to think of the past and be upset about him not being there with her. He would rather have her remember the memories and smile. And even though he wasn't here physically, he would always be in her heart so in a way, he's still there with her. Thinking about it that way made her feel a bit better.
The next day, as Heer came down the stairs for breakfast, Kaki noticed a change in her. Her friends came shortly afterwards and noticed too but realized it was a good change and that maybe Heer was beginning to feel better and were glad. The next few days, Heer started to smile a bit more and talk to everyone more. She even ate more and she no longer looked pale or fragile. Slowly the old Heer was coming back. The Heer who always smiled, pulled pranks and was carefree.
Kaki felt relieved at this. She didn't want Heer to drown in memories of her father and not be able to take care of her. Heer was like her own daughter and it had hurt to see her like that. She smiled thinking how everything was turning out for the best.
Little did Kaki know that all that would change. A few days later, Kaki came home with bags of vegetables and was going to make dinner. She opened the door and stood frozen to the ground. To say that she was shocked was an understatement. In the middle of the room stood Daljeet, Heer's bua. She also saw Heer sitting on the couch, head bent down as she stared at the floor. Kaki knew how much Heer feared her Bua and the effect Daljeet had on her. During Heer's childhood when her mother had passed away, Daljeet had come to live with them. During that time Daljeet had mistreated Heer by making her do chores and hitting her, and had instilled fear in her. Every day she would look terrified whenever she crossed Daljeet's path, something she always tried to avoid and tried not to make her mad. Heer had confided in Kaki when Kaki had found Heer hiding in her room, crying. Heer made Kaki promise not to tell Balraj, as she was scared of what Daljeet might do to her, but Kaki couldn't bear to see Heer like this. Kaki had then made up an excuse to Balraj, saying how Daljeet should be looking after her daughter Vishakha. And since that day, Kaki had been living with Heer.
"Daljeet? Tum yahaan? Is everything alright?" she asked.
"I'm fine. But what about Heer? As soon as I heard about Balraj's death I came running here" Kaki could tell that the tears Daljeet was shedding were fake. "But don't worry Heer" Daljeet went on as she shifted her attention to the girl. "I'm staying here now. I'll take good care of you."
"But what about Vishakha? And Balwant? Aren't you needed back home? I'm here to take care of her." Kaki tried to assure her.
"Well Vishakha's married now so she's at her in-laws. And me and Balwant got divorced 5 years ago, don't you remember?"
Poor guy can live in peace now. Kaki had always wondered what Balwant was thinking when he got married to Daljeet. Divorcing her was the smartest thing the man had ever done. Of course that meant they were stuck with her. "Oh…So how long will you be staying?" Kaki asked, trying to be polite.
"Jab tak Heer ki shaadi nahin ho jati" Daljeet replied happily. Heer and Kaki looked at Daljeet, shocked at what they were hearing.
"Sh-sh-shaadi? Heer ki? Don't you think it's a bit early?" Kaki tried to reason with her.
"Nonsense. She's old enough to get married now and you can't keep a single girl at home forever. Fortunately I've found a boy for her."
"Don't you think you should've asked Heer first?" Annoyance evident in her voice.
"What's there to ask. I know Heer will never say no to me, right Heer?" Daljeet turned to look at Heer. "Shaadi karogi na?"
After a moment of hesitation, Heer replied. "Ji bua." Her eyes were filled with sorrow while Kaki tried to comprehend what was going on.
