Part 1
It was a beautiful day in the village with men working hard in the fields, children running around and playing, women looking after the house and doing chores. In the corner of the village was a huge house that belonged to the wealthiest man in the village, Balraj Mann. He owned most of the land in the village and it was his ancestral land. Even though he didn't have to do any work, he still chose to work in his own fields and even opened up schools in the village.
The sun's rays peered through one of the windows and shone on a sleeping girl's face. She squinted her eyes and turned to face the other way but was disturbed by the noise coming from outside.
"Yeh ladki bhi na. It's already 10 and I bet she's still sleeping" the girl quickly got up hearing her kaki's voice from outside and rushed to get ready. She ran down the stairs with her dupatta dragging on the steps and hurried to the back door before Kaki could yell at her.
"And where do you think you're going Heer?" The girl stopped in her tracks and bit her tongue, realising she had been caught.
"Uh...nowhere" she said while looking away from Kaki.
"Nowhere eh? Then why were you running?" Kaki crossed her arms
"Running? Who me? I wasn't running"
"A kya hua?" asked a tired Balraj who was now familiar with this daily routine. He would usually walk in and find Kaki getting mad at Heer for running around or sleeping in and giving a lecture on how young girls should wake up early and do some work around the house instead of acting like a kid.
" You can ask your ladli daughter yourself. App hi ne begard ke rakha hain. This girl doesn't wake up before 10 and when she does, she'll go out and play as if she's still a child."
"Come on Kaki. I woke up before 10 today." Heer smiled innocently at Kaki. Kaki just rolled her eyes.
"Heer!" came a voice from outside
"Acha chachi ab main chalti hoon. Bye papa" and she ran off before Kaki could say anything. Balraj just smiled and shook his head.
Heer quickly went outside and grabbed Shabo's hand and ran while Kaki came outside and called after her to stop.
After a while, they started walking until they reached the fields where all the kids were playing.
"Didi!" one of the kids ran up to Heer with a cricket bat and stopped her. "Didi will you play with us?" he asked.
"Sorry Ayush I can't. I have to go" She said while looking at Shabo.
Shabo sighed. "I GUESS you can play for a little while." Heer's face lit up and she went to the field while Shabo just shook her head at Heer's childishness. "When will this girl grow up?" she wondered while she sat down near a tree to watch. Heer tied her dupatta to the side and got ready to bat. Watching Heer play and run like crazy when she hit the ball made Shabo smile. Even though Heer was 20 and acted half her age at times, she was a lot of fun to be with. After around 20 mins, Shabo finally got up and told Heer to hurry as they had to meet the rest of their friends. Shabo and Heer quickly walked to the shops and saw Meera and Ravz waiting for them.
They quickly ran to Ravz and Meera out of breath. "Woh-" Heer started to say but was cut off.
"Save it. Enough of your excuses. We've heard them all before. You were either busy playing cricket or woke up late. Again" Ravz rolled her eyes while walking away.
"Aww come on Ravz. I'm sorry."
"Hey! What about me? I was waiting too!" Meera pretended to look mad.
"I'm really very sorry that you two had to wait for me"
"Hey! What about me! I had to watch you play cricket!" said Shabo
Heer rolled her eyes. "Ok fine. Ravz, Meera, Shabo, I'm sorry" she said while holding her ears.
Ravz and them all smiled and they started walking towards one of the stalls and started looking at things. After a while, the start to head back. Heer was too busy talking that she didn't notice the figure in front of her who was busy talking on his phone.
"Why did I have to come and visit dadi? Why can't she just live with us? I hate coming here!" the guy complained on the phone. He was too busy arguing that he didn't see Heer in front of him and bumped in to her, causing both of them to fall.
