Part 8
While talking, Prem didn't fail to miss the flash of blue that went past him and the worried look on Heer's face. He frowned slightly. He was used to seeing the Heer who got worked up and argues a lot, especially with him but not this Heer. It bothered him. He saw Shabo quickly go to Meera and them and they exited out soon after. Something was up. Prem didn't know what it was and he decided to leave it. It wasn't any of his business and he didn't want to intrude. Moments later this was all in the back of his head as Dadi introduced him to more people.
"I'm sorry. We could not save him." As soon the doctor said these words, Heer went numb. Her Bauji was no more. She thought of all the times Balraj had supported her in her arguments with Kaki, how he had taught her how to ride a bike, learn to walk, helped her with her homework, told her stories before going to bed and how proud he had been of her whenever she got good grades or wn a competition. He had always been there, as a father, mother, and a friend. And now he was gone.
She could barely feel the tears streaming down her cheeks and the voices floating around in the air. She was all alone. She felt an emptiness inside. Words flew past her. Heartattack, Heer, Balraj, though none seemed to register. And then it all went black.
"Heer." "I think she's waking up." "I'll go call the doctor."
Heer opened her eyes to see all her friends surrounding her. She opened her mouth to call out Bauji but then stopped and her eyes were filled with tears. Her friends rushed to her side to console her while Kaki came in with the doctor. She didn't know what was going on. She was stuck in her own little bubble and registered nothing.
She was discharged later on that day and brought home. Kaki immediately took over everything, looking after her and preparing for the funeral. Meera and the others also stayed over to help Heer deal with it but she just wanted to be left alone. She spent her time by herself in her room or the few times she went outside for walks. Kaki was worried about Heer's loneliness but there wasn't much she could do. Many people from the village came by to offer their condolences but Heer ignored them. She didn't want their sympathy. It wasn't going to bring her Bauji back.
Days after the funeral Heer was still the same. It was late at night when Heer went to the lake. She visited there often and it sort of made her feel better. She was sitting on the grass looking at the water when a tall figure walked up to her and sat down next to her.
"A bit late to be wandering around isn't it?" he asked.
She turned to face him, a bit surprised to see him. "Leave me alone. I don't want to argue with you Prem." All she wanted was to be alone, away from everyone.
"You ok?" Prem asked with concern.
"I'm fine! Just leave me alone!" She yelled, with a few tears in her eyes.
Prem looked at her for a moment before getting up. " You know you'll feel better if you let it out. Keeping it in will just make it worse and it'll distance you from the people you care about." he said before walking away.
"Don't go. Please." Though her words were barely audiable, Prem somehow heard her and sat down beside her again.
They sat in silence, looking at the calm water.
"I miss him." Heer spoke, after a few minutes of silence. "Why did Bauji have to leave me and go?" Tears were streaming down her cheeks. It was the first time Heer was letting these words out and Prem was surprised that she was telling him this. He expected himself to be the last person she would share her feelings to but was glad that she was opening up to someone. He noticed she had become quieter over the past few weeks and a bit pale. While Heer let it all out throught her tears, Prem wrapped his arms around her.
"It's ok Heer, it's ok. Just let it all out." he whispered. A while later, when Heer's crying was reduced to sobs, they realized the position they were in and Prem removed his arms and the air was filled with an awkward silence.
"Heer tumhe pata hain, jab koi hume chodh ke chala jata hain, woh ek tara ban jata hain" Heer looked at Prem in surprise. "Your Bauji is up there looking at you and I don't think he'd be happy to see you like this, lonely and distant from everyone with your heart filled with grief. Your Bauji is hurt by seeing you like this. Is this how he would want to be?"
Heer knew Prem was right. Balraj would never want his Heer to be upset. He always wanted to see Heer smiling and she knew that if he saw her now, he'd be heartbroken. Though she missed him, Heer realised that she shouldn't distance herself from everyone else or cry over Balraj's death. Instead she should think of all the memories and smile about that.
They sat there for another hour before deciding that it was really late and they should go home. Without saying anything Prem simply accompanied Heer home and she didn't object. He dropped her off to the front gates and turned to go.
"Thanks Prem. For everything."
"Anytime Heer" he smiled, before leaving.
