Part 24
The sky, post-sunrise, was a beautiful canvas graced with sky blues and pure milky whites. The blue in the depths beyond and the smooth, rounded, sugary sweet clouds in the foreground.; green plastic lawn and garden chairs, a yellow butterfly dancing above the steamy urban pavement with an invisible partner to a made up song. The delicious intoxicating sunlight was bound to wake up even the heaviest sleeper in Mumbai.
A slender figure stretched as it woke up bursting with energy, flocking every bit of happiness it can find sleeping beside the person it truly adored, Prem. Heer flashed a playful look at Prem, who was still sleeping, and got up off the bed when suddenly a hand grabbed her wrist from the back pulling her back down. She fell head first on Prem's lap who was sitting at an angle of 90 degrees, his eyes staring directly into hers. Heer looked down upon her feet and then all of a sudden felt like her old playful self once again. She brought her hands closer to Prem's neck and then wrapped it around him causing Prem to come forth her lips. When their lips were just an inch apart, Heer brought her finger to his lips and kept it on them signing him to move away. She stabilized herself on the bed, got up, winked at Prem, and ran downstairs. Prem lay on the bed sighing.
"Bhabhi, thank you, you didn't put as much oil in the food as Mamma does. I am gaining weight and I want to lose some" remarked Preet
"Preet? I don't put a lot of oil in anything" retorted an angered Gayatri who enjoyed cooking a lot and was against anyone who dared to criticize it
Prem was too lost in Heer to even notice the debate that was happening at the table
"Gayatri, tum zyada oil dalti ho, look I used to be so handsome, look what happened to me now" joked Lalit
Lalit gave Preet a high five and said "Heer, sachi, this breakfast is once again delicious, isn't it Prem?"
"ji?" questioned Prem
"Arey papa, Bhaiyya to bhabhi main hi khoye rehtey hain(Oh dad, Bhaiyya is always lost in Heer bhabhi's thoughts)…why are you asking him" joked Preet
Heer cleared her throat in embarrasement and Prem questioned Preet
"To Preet, why are you trying to lose weight, is it for someone special?"
"Bhaiyya, main to, aise, umm, nahi, kuch,…"
"Haan haan bus, we all know what's happening to you. You have started singing songs, worrying about the business, worrying about your figure, asking about Heer's sister…were not dumb Preet, we know"
"Bhaiyya, there is nothing like that" Preet gestured for Prem to stop making fun of him as he as embarrassed
"Wah Wah Ramji, Jodi kya banayi, Devar devrani ko, Bhadhai ho bhadhai" teased Heer which caused Preet to excuse himself and run upstairs
"Oh crap, were getting late, I have to get to work and so do all of you" said Prem as he hurried
"Prem its okay, today is a Friday, and is February 16th, we don't have to go early as everyone will come later in the morning" said Lalit as he got him to stop worrying about getting to work
"And plus, its your second day after marriage" exclaimed Gayatri
Prem noticed a slight change in Heer's expression…
Everyone had left for either work or shopping except Heer. All of a sudden, after everyone left, she felt a little poignant which Prem noticed before leaving. He didn't know why or what had caused her to feel cheerless but he missed the smile that flashed him when he left for work. He wanted to see a cheerful Heer once again.
It was a crisp night as Heer sat idly under an enormous oak tree watching as a whirlwind whisked across the rolling hills of the meadow. As it passed by Heer, the whirlwind scooped up a dormant pile of leaves lying next to the oak tree. The leaves appeared to come alive twisting, turning, and dancing about the meadow. They supported their colors of red, orange, brown, and yellow. The brittle autumn leaves seemed to be having a party which contrasted the way Heer was feeling at that moment. As the party moved out of sight, Heer began to think about the last time she had visited the meadow with someone really close to her. The memories of her last visit were vivid with relaxed and peaceful thoughts motivated by the images, scents, and sounds of the meadow. The beauty of the meadow in the summer was unequaled. Her memories contained many images of this special place. Snow covered mountains extend high above the heavens; thus, setting the backdrop to the meadow. Wildflowers speckled the base of the mountain becoming more abundant near the babbling brook, the talks that her and her father shared between one another and the last time where he had held her so close. These memories were winding and unwinding in her head just as the leaves were beneath her.
Heer decided to take a walk and so she got up…
"Prem, why...how come…aren't you supposed to be at work?"
"Shhh..", Prem replied as he kept his finger on Heer's tender lips," Heer, you were so cheerful in the morning but after Papa mentioned the date and the work topic came up, you became so gloomy. What happened? Are you okay?"
"Prem, please, you have to be at work, I think its better if you leave" Heer said as she turned to get away from a worried Prem but Prem stopped Heer gently grabbing her waist and bringing Heer back to face him
"Heer, I am not going anywhere until I find out what is keeping you from being happy. I swore in front of everyone that I would always keep you happy and I cant go back on my Promise", Prem looked at Heer eye to eye holding her by her waist, very close. He showed his concern through his eyes and it was obvious that he wasn't going to let her go until he found out
Heer loosened Prem's grip and…
The sky darkened and turned suddenly to a dark black gloomy sky hovering with a mist cloud. Prem looked up and seemingly it was going to pour down. Heavily, the wind blew. Huge clouds had started fusing together. Heavily rain poured, hitting the ground like bullets from a gun.
Prem ran towards Heer asking her to go inside as it was raining heavily. Finally, after catching up to Heer…
"Heer tumhe kiya ho gaya hai?" Prem asked Heer with a slightly higher tone" Why are you behaving this way, its so cold, you are going to get sick. Come inside Heer please"
Heer slowly looked up into Prem's eyes. Those weren't the eyes he knew, as so he thought. As the swollen, red, tearful eyes looked up into his, he couldn't help but think he was responsible.
"Heer" Prem's tone once slightly higher, became a clam subtle tone, "Heer, why are you…why are you crying Heer?"
A voluminous thunder struck behind the two of them and that's when Heer broke down…broke down into the most painful tears Prem had ever seen. Suddenly, her body also felt limb causing her to lose strength in her knees which made her fall. She fell on her knees, crying, and so Prem also crouched near her resting her head on his chest. Thunder, Rain…Heartbeat, Tears…
Preet had come to Meher's workplace to give her a bouquet and to catch a glimpse of her. He went up the stairs, No Meher. He came to check in the classrooms, No Meher. After finally giving up, he went to the back of the school, where Meher taught, and found a girl sitting on a bench crying. He came up to her and…
"Preet, not today. I am not in the mood for any jokes today"
"But Meher, hua kia hai"
"Nothing Preet just leave, Please Preet"
Her gentle asking and tears caused him to leave. He didn't want to trouble her. He just couldn't gather the courage to ask her as well and so he drove back home. The whole ride back home, Meher's solemn expressions and puffy red eyes was all that he thought about.
Prem finally picked up Heer in his arms and took her inside…
"Heer, please batado. What is wrong, why are you so sad?"
"Prem, I am sorry. I didn't mean to…" He hushed her once again…
"its okay…don't worry Heer"
"Prem, aaj…today is the day, February 16th, that Babuji (heer's father), left me Meher and Mamma all alone. Every year this day, me and Meher can never be happy. You don't know Prem. My father was everything. You know whenever he would come home from work, he would bring me and Meher chocolates" the thought brought a smile to Heer's face "Maa would always get mad at Babuji but he had his ways of consoling her. Meher would always take the bigger chocolate but Babuji knew and he brought an extra one for me and he would give it to me. Everyday I would see him outside school, waiting to pick me up. One day, February 16th, no one showed up. This man came and told me that my mother had sent him to pick me up but I waited. I told him I am not going anywhere unless my dad shows up…and I guess he never did. The time me and Meher spent with him, the memories, are still so fresh and to this day, me and Meher both cry in the memory of him. Mamma can hide it but we were so young when we lost him, I was 13 and Meher was 9…"
"Cry Heer, just cry…that is the only way you'll be able to get it out. Let all your emotions run forth and cry"
Prem sat beside Heer as she cried and cried for hours. He just stared at the emotions and the different personalities of Heer that he was witnessing. The girl he thought was like an open book, but as he was getting closer to Heer, he was realizing the many sides of Heer he had to witness. Preet was around the corner listening to this and he knew why his love, his Meher, was crying…
The once gloomy skies were now taken over by the enlightening rays that the sun had brought in. Prem yawned and stretched as he got up. Suddenly, his mind was overwhelmed by last night's memories. Heer's solemn face kept coming across his eyes. He looked to his side and was astonished by finding Heer still asleep. Funny, as she usually got up before him and dazzled him with her smile but this time, she was sleeping, no smile, no twinkle. Her face seemed flushed as well. He decided to take advantage of the moment to irritate Heer. He caressed her hair tenderly with a smile on his face. He awaited a smile to flash across Heer's face as well, but nothing. He then slowly brought his gentle fingers to her cheeks and her lips and realized that Heer's face was warmer than usual. He tried to wake Heer up but she didn't wake up. He sat up straight as his smile vanished. The face that was once playful had now been taken over by a worrying expression…
"Heer…Heer.."
