Part 4

Smiling softly at the statue-like figure addressing her arrival with a slight bow, she extended her palm against the cool glass… resting it there for a minute… as though in recollection of something… and in then without further adieu, she pushed in… The warmth emitting from the heating facilities of the building immediately soothing her long-numbed senses… Lifting her eyes after shrugging off the white specks sprinkled over her, she took a barely noticeable deep breath before staring at the metallic dial on her wrist once more… An hour remained until the stillness of her surroundings burst into life…

Walking through the empty corridors, she pushed her hands further into the pockets of her long coat… Her vigilant eyes fixated at the far end of the long compartment… As she approached nearer, the bold block letters came into a breathable focus… "PRACHI MISHRA"… Stopping now a few steps away from the oak plate, she looked on with unexpectedly drowsy eyes… Mishra… A distant memory suddenly reared its head, blinding her thoughts…

(Flashback)

A distinct sense of pleasance was radiating from her each angle… as she every now and then sneaked a glance at the man standing some steps away… his alluring persona garnished with a cloth matching her own… The pristine white… akin to the inexplicable feelings she had unknowingly nurtured for the man. As she stared at him with undoubted wonder, she felt her shameless observing caught off guard… as in some moment of fate, his eyes caught hers… arresting them in their fascinating hold. Too stunned too react, she felt her stare glued to his in a pulsating moment… "Mrs. Mishra…" Thankfully startled, she quickly broke away from the absorbing gaze. "Mubarak ho aapko…" (Congratulations to you)… A tinge of guilt welled inside, as she smiled lightly at the woman who seemingly was congratulating her… for something she had momentarily forgotten… still to shaken by the silent confrontation with the tall man… Suddenly, the blood rushed to her head… cursing through her at a quickened pace… that matched by the tireless beat of her heart… Lifting her eyes hesitantly, she watched him near her… She could feel the colour unwontedly rise to her cheeks… as though caught amidst a lie… "Prachi…" The name was the verbal assurance of her being… She had heard it all her life… but for some reason… when it came fleeting from his lips… it took a more enigmatic tone… It was not often that he called her, but in times like these… she couldn't fathom the noise of another. "Ji…" she mumbled in a quiet voice, immediately regretting the tone of her voice… Without trial, she had always taken a meek stature when it came to him… Like he had full control… and that too without protest… Catching the sluggish half-smile on his soft lips, she felt herself careless of what was the purpose of his stride towards her. Feeling her wrist encase in the grasp of a firm hold, she looked down… dumbfounded by the touch… Her eyes relayed between him and her wrist… Before finally ceasing at his face… or more so, his lips… "Chalo, main tumhe kuch logon se milwata hoon…" (Come, I'll introduce you to some people…). And with that, he led her to an awaiting circle of distinguished personailities… Stopping at the centre-front of the mini crowd, she felt her scanning eyes fall as her arm rested loosely to her side now… his touch sending a tingle across her skin… "Gentlemen, meet my wife… Mrs. Prachi Mishra." As he said so, she lifted her gaze immediately towards the familiarly handsome, dark features… Her eyes narrating her surprise… as they trailed from him, to the arm clad in the immaculate white… hanging loosely across her shoulders… Looking back at him, the smile etched in his face… engraved itself into her mind, as did the cherished moment…

(End Flashback)

Exhaling lightly, she brushed aside the memory and pushed into the glass being the barrier between herself and her world next to the little boy… workher cabin… Routinely, she walked automatically towards the full-length mirror standing flatly next to the tall coat hanger. The routines took a slightly different touch today, as she felt herself… for the first time… stop and take a look at the woman staring back at her through the glass… She looked much like any businesswoman kind… Her features were strong, pretty and qualified… Aside from the physical, she had a secure job as director of a thriving advertising company… Everything any woman could want was hers… Yet still the lacking in her life seemed to outweigh everything else… behind the faade of confidence… she hid a vulnerability… behind the smile… unshed tears… behind the success… a profound defeat… Currently, she ran a hand through the long, straight hairs… pulling them into a professional poneytail… and pulled the navy veil around her neck… Her rigid, confident figure complemented the dark salwaar kameez adorning her body… With one last glance, she turned from the reflection… and buried herself amongst the files beckoning her…

***

Stepping purposefully into the hall… she lifted her eyes to the turning on of the red light beaming "2nd"… With quick strides, she waited as a few determined bodies filtered out through the metallic doors… Clinging the white file tightly to her chest, she suddenly felt a strange anxiety overwhelm her… Looking about with a quick glance, she resolved to a corner of the small space… while intently watching the lights turn on and off… Finally, the breath fully released from her lungs as the lift rang at floor 8. Desperately, she began the struggle to a suddenly overcrowded compartment… Glad that she made it to the doors, she stopped when feeling a light tug at her side… turning to her side, she traced the end of her dupatta having caught itself to something… or rather someone… but as people stepped in and out… the faces all were but a blur… Irritated, she looked from the lost end of her veil to the closing doors… Frustrated, she tugged at the material… glad when she was finally able to surpass the suffocating area… Straightening herself, she strode towards the designated conference room…

After the umpteenth time, she looked at her watch… ten minutes… eight minutes… Mujhe itni bechaini kyun hai… (Why am I so anxious/nervous…), she thought perplexed at her strange discomfort. It certainly was not the first time she was engaging in such a high-profile endeavour. She had become a part of Depth Industries two years back… and immediately sunk into the work regime. Her confidence had never waned, and she had always taken things with a strict, business-like demeanour. And here she was… after so long… sweating over something, which she could not explain… In the confusion and turmoil within, her eyes fell precariously upon the untouched bottle of water standing atop the smooth surface. Staring at it for an uncertain second, she opened the cap and allowed the tasteless liquid rush down her throat. After a few seconds, she felt herself calm a little, and set aside the bottle, whilst straightening out the papers and herself. One-by-one various familiar and some not so familiar faces filed into the room, taking their positions as designated by the wooden demarcations. All had by now arrived… except for the most awaited…

A few days back, she had been handed a file… with the prospects of a future brand name in luxurious perfume. Sadah… Aapke liye. (Forever… Yours.) The chosen title had immediately struck her in some inexplicable way… After reading all the details of the plan of this new project, she had come across a very fine point, which also appealed her attention. Before signing the dotted line, there was a single, bolded condition… "The name of the brand is subject to no change." It seemed rather odd that such a condition would apply with an advertising company, which is supposed to suggest selling techniques.

In any case, now she stared at her watch once more… The anxiety now slowly being replaced by irritancy. There was three minutes left until the commencement of the meeting and the head of the other party was nowhere to be seen. She hated lateness… Punctuality was something she had really come to value… it had been one of the strong lessons life had taught her… and she hated breaking from it. Taking a deep breath, she resolved that if the client did not show up soon, she would not bother and tell her boss that the client was incompatible. Just as she lifted her eyes from the clock striking exactly a minute before nine, she caught a blur enter the room from the corner of her eye… A blur… like that caught in motion by a camera… Along with the blur, a deeply familiar whiff of air caught her senses off guard… Calming herself, she looked u to face the almost-late personality… when the breath caught in her throat…

Staring back at her… were the all-too familiar… intense features… of a dangerously close line of memories… Nothing much seemed to have changed of the alluring rugged features… except… There seemed a different glint in the eyes, which she now matched with blatant surprise… She had not bothered earlier… but now she removed her gaze from him… and caught the nameplate… "Milind Mishra: CEO of MICHI Industries"… She felt like the breath had been knocked out of her… her eyes unable to move off of the blaring nameplate… while the reality of the moment seemed dangerously real… slowly… but surely. Realizing her compromising position, she decided this was just going to be another meeting… and nothing different. Still void of expression, she looked slowly towards Mr. Dubey who was doing a round of introductions… which now pointed towards the man sitting across from her… "And this is Mr. Milind Mishra, The CEO and head of the prosperous MICHI Industries."

When he had zeroed in on Depth Industries as the promotional team for his latest collection of high-end perfumes, he had never imagined that the decision would hail such reality. The idea for the fragrance had been the result of an inspiration… and inspiration allowed to him… by her… Strange, the way fate worked… After that day, he had searched everywhere… but his thirsty eyes were not to be quenched… until this very moment. Throughout the entire presentation, his eyes glued her… taking in every intricate detail… Time had indeed made it's passage felt… He could sense the various transformations she had embellished… She conversed with a very professional tone and worked with equal ease… Prachi had changed… But he knew… some things… never change… and beneath the layers… he could still very clearly identify PrachiPrachi Mishra… He could sense the avoidance of her eyes… their ill-at-ease whenever they encountered his own… very well aware… of her weakness… Slowly, an impish half-smile formed on his lips, as she looked up… He felt guilty… God knows… what hell he had lived in every day… after that one… But seeing her now, in front of him… he felt a slight bit of the burden rise… As he watched her eyes now, he could sense the difference… She was not going to relent easy… he knew… The meeting came to a conclusion with the best of results as she congratulated every face with a distinct professionalism. One-by-one, the bodies exited the room… all offering a hand to her in success… Alas, it was his turn… Casually, he stepped aside from behind the long counter… and calculatedly made his way towards her… his hands confidently residing in the pockets of the dark trousers… unknown to her… shaking… He watched at an arm's length away, as the colours changed in her face… features imperceptible to the wanderer, but detail not to be missed by his… Despite it all, he smiled inwardly at the affect he still had on her…

Silence ensued… as each filled the other within the reservoir of their eyes… Perhaps quenching some silent, unrelenting thirst… Finally, she interrupted the moment… as he continued to stare at her shamelessly… "Congratulations Mr. Mishra"… Her features were firm… a ruthless business aspect to her tone… And she offered no other gesture… Somewhere, he felt it pierce him… but still, his lips remained sealed… Rather, the sluggish grin now formed on his lips again… Seeing her face distort in disgust, he felt a strange amusement out of the situation. He continued to watch as she gathered the leaves of paper and turn towards the door… The urgency in her stride evident in the strong whiff of air… reeking of her sweet scent… Momentarily, he relapsed into the past… Awakened by her voice… looking towards the exit, he stared at her composed figure as one hand lay flat against the glass door and the other arm hugged the file close… "Bahut kuch badal gaya hai…" (Lots has changed…) she whispered his thoughts… before pushing the door…

Cheers,

dc
