Dissecting Anurag's Harmful Saviour Complex

lets talk about why Anurag's saviour complex: a damn long thread.

I'll start off by saying that Anurag is one of the most interesting characters on the show. As a psychology student I find his behaviours and actions so complex.

Anurag has a saviour complex; a hero complex. The same thing. He has to be the person to fix the problems of everyone around him, alone. This is mostly focused on being Prerna's hero.

We see this issue arise when we are introduced to Bajaj who wanted to takeover Basu Publications. Anurag didn't tell Nivedita about the severity of the issue until she found out herself. This is because he wanted to be one to sort out the issue and be the hero who saved his family and his Dad's business. This doesn't make him a bad guy. He is a good guy, but this issue causes many problems. Because he failed to tell Nivi the Bajaj problem only got worse.

We are first introduced to his hero complex in the Navin track which he saved Prerna from. Throughout every time he has saved Prerna he has gained her affection and gratefuless. And he likes that. He loves her attention and the feeling of being needed; the feeling of being wanted. That's why he is so drawn to her. She is Prerna, who in his eyes, is vulnerable and needs to be saved from the world and only he can save her. He loves the fact that she needs him. Anurag is inherently a selfless person and his need to be needed found its root in Prerna.

For example, the whole Komolika (Hina Khan) issue could have been fixed if he told her and told everyone. But he wanted to be the one to save her and her family. They could have found a new house, they had the capacity to sort their own problems out. Even with the current track. It could have very easily looked like self defence. He should have told Prerna. There was no need for this sacrifice.

This saviour complex is also what makes his actions so foolish. for example when Navin kidnapped Prerna. when Anurag knew where she was he could have easily called the police but no he had to be the one to save her and have all her attention and love which is what delayed the police from saving them and also risked Prerna's life and his life.

Prerna herself always tells him how he is her hero and she is reliant and dependant on him. This doesnt make him a bad character but it sheds some light into why he does what he does.

Maybe this is due to how Mohini bought him up. Being her beloved son she has probably instilled the idea onto him that he is the best and he is special and her life is dependant on him. He is everything to her and he knows that. She has probably caused his saviour complex. Also, with his money he knew he could help Prerna with anything.

if you notice every action he takes is due to his desire to be needed and to be the hero which is also why him and Prerna worked so well at the start of their relationship. Their relationship literally started off with him saving her from the fire and then saving her from Navin and he kept on saving her. Anurag loves saving Prerna because it makes him feel special. It makes him a hero in her eyes, he knows she used to idealise him.

Prerna at the start of the show needed to be saved and he needed to be the saviour.

All of his pointless sacrifices could have been avoided if he had just communicated and let people help him. I guess him and Prerna are the same that way.

This ended up being way too long so I'll stop it now and just say that this isnt bashing Anurag. I honestly love his character and find him so complex.
