EIGHT

Prerna anxiously tapped her right foot against the expensive tile floor of Mr. Bajaj's living hall.

Living hall was an understatement. It was an effing ballroom.

The contours of the hall was in contrast.

The decor was tastefull and classy. The sofas were plush. Cream and brown in colour.

Expensive paintings hung high and below on the walls. There was a certain subtlety in them.

Nothing in Bajaj Mansion was overtly expressive and yet screamed wealth and influence.

The chandelier hanging above her was the epitome of beauty and perfection. It was crystalline snow, she thought.

She looked at the life size portrait of the Bajaj family on the wall.

Mr. Bajaj had his arms around an elderly lady. Her eyes twinkled with humor and warmth. Must be his mother though there was no resemblance.

On another side of that lady was a young, gorgeous model like beauty. She had a face that deserved to be on the cover of every Vogue magazine. Such gene pools.

But who was she? Not Mr. Bajaj's sister, Prerna was sure. His wife? No. She wasn't wearing a mangal sutra or vermilion.

Perhaps a cousin. A distant gorgeous cousin.

Prerna felt like an interloper against the gorgeous backdrop of Bajaj Mansion. Like a fly in cream.

She was dressed in her favourite kurti and leggings. Her dupatta was on one shoulder. She had put on a little makeup much to the astonishment of Shivani.

Prerna never put makeup. But when Mr. Bajaj called her in the morning and asked her to meet him, she decided that she might as well look presentable.

Not that she cared about what he thought of her.

Okay, maybe she did care about his opinion.

She was lost in her train of thoughts, swirling the orange juice in the glass that she didn't hear footsteps approaching her.

"Good morning Ms. Sharma," came a velvety voice.

Prerna jumped and turned around to face the devil she had befriended.

"Mr. Bajaj ," she nodded. "Good morning. I've been waiting for some time." Unwanted snark entered her voice.

"My apologies. I was a little preoccupied." he said sincerely. But his voice had a little mischievous tone that he couldn't or didn't disguise.

He was teasing her. The nerve of that man.

"Rescuing damsels in distress," she mused.

He smirked, "Or a certain distressing damsel."

Was he referring to her or someone else?

"Are you insinuating that I distress you?"

"I'm not insinuating anything," he retorted. "But let's discuss why you're here."

He had Prerna's entire attention now.

"My P.A got married last week and moved to the States," he began. "And I'm in search of a new PA."

Prerna was sure that her mouth was agape.

Did he want her to work for him?

Couldn't he get more qualified people?

She raised her quires but he silenced it with a flick of his fingers.

"I know what you're going to ask. I could get more qualified people but I think it would benefit you to work for me. If you continue working in Bajaj Industries, you might get a promotion. But if you leave, you'll leave with enough experience to land another job."

Whatever he said was true, Prerna wondered.

But why would he help her?

"I'm a busy man, Ms. Sharma and pressed for time."

"Okay, I accept," she muttered. Without a second thought.

Mr. Bajaj smiled, "Good. We'll discuss your job. Come with me. I want to show you something."

Prerna put the juice glass on the table and followed him.

They were in his study.

It was an effing library.

If she thought that his room was impressive then the study room was to die for. It had plethora of books. And heaven for a bookworm like her.

So Mr. Bajaj got looks, wealth, influence, power.

Life was so unfair.

She was sure that her face was comical because Mr. Bajaj laughed.

It was pleasant and like piano notes.

"I'm glad you like it. Because from tomorrow onwards, you're going to spend a lot of time here," he began. "You're going to work for me from eight in morning to one in the afternoon . Then you're replacement will take over onwards. For your studies, you will do private classes from home. And you will reach here at five. From five to seven, I'll help you with all your queries and studies."

When he finished, Prerna's head was reeling.

Mr. Bajaj, it appeared, had thought of everything.

And whatever he proposed would be beneficial for her. But his reason behind it was still unclear.

"You start from tomorrow," said Mr. Bajaj as he sat in front of her on his study desk. "Any queries?"

"Just one," said Prerna. "Why are you doing this?"

Mr. Bajaj sighed, exasperated. "Because I want to butter you up and take over your multinational company."

Prerna gave him the stink eye and and look she hoped was intimidating.

"Alright. I'm doing this to help you because of your father," he said.

How did her father come into all this?

"He helped me once a long time ago. When I needed it."

That was apparently all the reason he was telling her.

He dropped her off in front of her house.

Her mind filled with another set of questions regarding Mr. Bajaj.

Interesting update. She came fully ready even if it's a light makeup to meet him. I like this subtle acknowledgement from her end, as his opinion matters. Bajaj has an extended family too just like in the show. Let's see how their characterisation is here. He wants her to work for him as his PA. He planned it very well, not to disturb her studies. An expected question from her. He is doing it for her father, let's see what help he got from her father.

I love how they talk, all the teasing, smirking, they both are different with each other, though they haven't realised it yet, I am looking forward to their employee employer moments so much in future.

Nice update. Waiting for the next one. Please continue soon.
