For a minute Prerna could not get a word out of her mouth. Then it seemed all she could utter was Mr. Bajaj's name as tears welled up in her eyes.
Anu watched tears beginning to fall from Prerna's eyes and felt his heart contract. The five years in jail had not changed her much outward; except for maybe, she had lost a little weight. She was still breathtakingly beautiful and could still take his breath away, but now, he had started to look her as a friend and a woman he had first loved. If nothing else, the five years with Sam, he had learned that holding a past relationship as an ideal for all his relationship. Prerna would always have a special place in his heart, but now, Sam was his main person in his life. He still had not figured out that way to say that to Sam because it seemed that she had long ago accepted to be the second woman forever and did not even want to talk about it. Sometimes he saw an intense pain that she tried to hide from him, but he knew nothing that he could do about her pain. For so many years, he had thought that he was in love with Prerna and now when he was starting to lose his heart to someone else, it seemed that she would never believe him.
It was his entire fault and he admitted that. He remembered the day as if it were yesterday. It was the first time after their marriage that they had gotten to be alone. After a very intense kiss, he did not know, for he knew that he had not been thinking about Prerna, he had whispered her name. Whatever the serene moment that he had with Sam was lost, for in that moment he saw her eyes widen and tears begin to well. When her lips had started to quiver, Anu had felt like the worst man in the world. As she tried to comfort him over his mistake, even when he had hurt her where she was most vulnerable, her love for him, Anu had seen tremendous strength in her. It had opened his eyes as nothing else could. The tears were wiped away from her eyes as she told him that she understood and it was all right, that at least he was honest. Nevertheless, he had always felt even since then that whatever they could have had been soiled. That night, when he had finally started to go deep in slumber, he had heard the tears begin to fall. The pillow, she had tried to burrow her face, did not muffle out her sounds. It was then that he had played with the idea to move to London so that she could have a new beginning in her own ground. Not what she felt was Prerna's turf and that she was the guest.
Sam had never talked to him about the night, but sometimes, he felt her gaze at him as if she wondered how she could love him. Those gazes made feel the need to shout to her that her heart was safe with him and he was worthy her love.
Now, as he watched Prerna shed tears, he felt like the worst failure. It seemed that he could do nothing but break his wife's heart. He had never been the best parent to Sneha. Now it seemed, he had failed as a friend.
"Anu?" Prerna cried. "Where is my family? Where is my house? Where is Mr. Bajaj? I do not know what is happening. I want my family back."
His heart was so constricted that he did not know how he got the words out. "Don't you worry, Prerna. Everything's just fine. They are just at my house right now."
"Take me there! I just want my family. I want Mr. Bajaj. Get me my babies!" Prerna sobbed aloud. "Why did no one come for me, Anu? Did they forget me?"
It seemed that she was about to fall down with the grief, so Anu gently put his arms around her waist and led her to the car. All the way there, he could fell her trembling with grief. As he was going to go to the other side of the car, Prerna grabbed his hand. Anu looked at her face, from what light there was, he saw a sense of defeat that worried him. Prerna was not a quitter. If she did not like something, she went to change it.
"Everything is fine?" Prerna asked. She did know why she asked, but she had a feeling that there was something wrong because Anu had failed to look her in the eye.
"Yes, Prerna." Anu lied and hoped that his guilt was not as apparent. Apparently, it was because he went to the car and backed it away.
Halfway back to the house, Prerna got her self together. She hoped that normal talk would get composure back. "So what's up with your life, Mr. Basu?" She asked with a smile.
"Well, I was out of the country for two years," Anu replied.
"Two years? Where to? Business or kuch different?"
"Just felt like needed a change and besides that's where Sam's dad was. It just made sense. It was pretty fun."
"Why did you come back then? How is Sam doing by the way?"
"I kinda didn't want to, but the things just came up. Sam is doing fine. She does secretary job. It is good. Well, here we are."
Anu had to say that he was glad that they had pulled up besides his house because he was tired to lying to Prerna. It would be somewhat good once things got out in the open. He did not know that if she could survive the news, but at least she would know where things stood. Anu got out and went to the passenger side to open the door.

Sam watched as everyone gathered in the living room to await the arrival of the daughter of the house. The feeling around the room was excitement mixed with nervousness. It was in the same line as what she was feeling. She did not know how she would really feel after she saw Prerna and Anu together, but Prerna was a friend and she would not do anything to bring any more pain to her. The ringing of the phone jarred her thoughts. It took her a couple of minutes to realize that it was hers.
"Hello." Sam said hoping her tenseness was not apparent in her voice after she had seen who it was.
"Hey," the voice said. "How you doing? It is going to be fine. Don't you worry. You sound kind of tense"
Sam could feel the curious looks of everyone in the room, so she decided to go to her room. "I will be right back," she said to everyone as she made her way to Anu and her room.
"Rishab? What are you doing call me? You are back?" Sam said. "She is coming back. You better be here. Anu has gone to pick her up." She could practically see him judge what to tell her.
"Well, she does not really need me right now. I will see if I can come. I am around here for business. I have to say everything is going just the way I planned it." He replied back.
"What do you mean you will think about if you can come or not?" Sam demanded with some heat. "She is your wife and you have to make time for her! Either you come back or else."
"Or else what?" She could see him with a sardonic voice. It angered her so much that she just hung up in him. She began regretting her action, but she hoped that she made a point. She made her way back to the living room.

Rishab smiled as he heard the tone of phone. He could practically see Sam's eyes flash in anger at the sake of Prerna. Sometimes he thought that Sam was godsend. He did not know how he would have gotten past the pain had it not been for her. He had told Sam that he would probably not come to see Prerna just so that he would take her mind off her worries and it had worked. There was no way he would not see Prerna, but he would go two or three hours later. With that thought, he went inside his motel room.
