Prerna's knees gave away underneath her and she was would have fallen to the ground had the guard not caught her. She felt as if she was in a nightmare from which she was unable to wakeup. Confiscated by the government?
"Are you okay?" The guard tentatively asked her as he let go.
"Confiscated! Why would it be confiscated by the government?!" Prerna cried out hysterically. "What about the previous owners?" Prerna demanded.
"Well," the guard replied cautiously as if his words along would send her screaming like a banshee, "since I have been here, there are been no owners. Maybe they moved or something."
Prerna felt such gratefulness towards the man. If the shock had not been so great about the confiscation of the house, she would have of course come to the same conclusion. Now that logic had returned, she decided that she would go to Mr. Bajaj's office and everything could be cleared up. Yes, she decided that it was what she would do.
Never one to linger when she made up her mind, Prerna thanked the guard. Then she called for a taxi to drop her off at Mr. Bajaj's office. The ride that only took half hour felt like hours to Prerna. She paid the driver and hopped off the taxi eager to see Mr. Bajaj again.
When she went to open the main door, it wouldn't budge open. Prerna felt thoroughly confused, but for once today, luck was at her side. There was a security guard right here. With a smile plastered to her face, she went towards him.
"Why is Mr. Bajaj's company closed today?" Prerna asked.
"You must be mistaken about the owner because the owner is not this Mr. Bajaj as you say, but Mr. Sharma."
For the second time in the day, she felt was if she was in a nightmare that she could not banish. It was as if her worst nightmares had come true.
"What do you mean? Why is the company closed today?" Prerna asked with such a husky voice so unlike hers.
"Well ma'am, the CEO of the company decided to give the workers a day off. You can have the address if you want though."
"Thank you for helping me," replied Prerna in a calm voice, when she wanted to give in to the urge to scream and tear out her hair. Well, Prerna thought, what else is there to but to go and meet this new CEO to see what happened.

As the taxi made way to the enormous house, Prerna could hear American rap blaring out. Wow, Prerna thought, the person must be young. It was not that she was trying to be stereotypical, but she did not think that most CEOs were into hip-hop.
She had to give it to the CEO about entertaining company. As she entered the house, Prerna was shocked at the lack of security, but then it was a party. Maybe, that was why the security was lax. Outside, the house had a look of classic eloquence, but inside, it spoke flamboyant. The lights were toned low to none with disco lights and few lights here and there. It smelled of alcohol, food, and human sweat as they gyrated to the music. Some of them looked drunk beyond reasoning and one man actually tried to pull her into a dance.
From the curious looks of few people were giving her, it was clear that she was standing out. She figured that it was her attire. In amidst of halter tops, tube tops, short skirt, and hip hugging jeans, her plane white and blue sari guaranteed attention.
The attention, fortunately, did not land long. It was when she noticed a man coming down from the stairways. He had on all white suit that stood out in the soft light. She did not think anything of it, but that was before the woman standing next to him. The woman had on a red figure hugging dress that showed a lot of skirt. When Prerna looked at her face, she let out a gasp. Debo! But what was she doing here? Her attention turned to the man and her face went white when she saw it was Prem.
"Prem?" It was the only word she seemed capable to utter.
"No," he said in a sneer. "The name is Sharma. Ud Sharma. The owner of the previous Bajaj Company. By the way, welcome home, Mother India"
"You?" Prerna asked with a surprise.
"Yes, funny how things work out, huh? By the way, it was with great pleasure when I did that I assure you," Prem replied.
"Where is my family? Where is Mr. Bajaj?" Prerna asked.
"Dunno bout the fam, Mother India. By the way, you are welcome to stay under my wing. The years you were gone were great pleasure. I can assure you, I am going to take great pleasure in kicking you out when you do something I do not like. Call it an act of charity if you will." To call the smile on his face smug would not be enough.
Prerna felt as if he had torn her heart and thrown it away. Whatever pleasures that she had gained from first seeing him was gone. With the unbelievable hunger was anger. "I don't need your charity! I am going to go find my family, not stay with filth. Hope you enjoy it here!" Prerna said as tears she could not control, spilled out. Had she turned a second later, she would have seen a malicious smile in Debo and Prem.

Now the night effulged Mumbai, but it had not taken the heat away. It did not see to matter to Prerna as she leaned against the metal doors that blocked the entrance to the house that she had shared with Mr. Bajaj. The thought of him brought another round of fresh tears. It seemed that she could not seem to block the tears out. Nothing had seemed to right for her today. Her world had shattered and now she alone had to pick up the pieces in the dark. Prerna could have stayed at a motel, but her heart was not in it. Therefore, she had come back to the house that had known pain, but also, irreplaceable love so that she could garner some hope.
"Ma'am," the same guard afternoon addressed her. "Why are you still here? Go back to your home. Do you want me to get you a ride?"
Home? She had no home anymore. The world that she had known was gone. She had to admit to herself that she had been a fool to think that she would come back to the same world she had left. Now, she had no idea what to do. Where to go. Who to talk to. She did not even know who she was anymore. The family that she had thought defined her and made her was no more. Prerna had to search for her identity.
"Its all right. I will take her from here," a familiar voice said.
Prerna looked up to see Anu.

Sam was trying to read the novel that most critics had placed as exciting and controversial as the The DaVinci Code. It was a moot effort for her to be engrossed in the novel today seeing as the event occurring today. Sam had always prided herself on trying to be an understanding woman, but she did not know how she would succeed this time. It was not that she did not doubt that Anu cared for, but uppermost in her mind was the fact that Anu had married her because Prerna asked her. It was not that she did not like Prerna, but she was first a woman whose husband was more than likely still deeply in love with a woman that happened to her friend.
Sam had always thought that she was more confident and had more self-esteem to be worrying about what her husband's affection for her, but just when she now their very fragile relationship was in question. Sometimes, she had dreams where, in a life-threatening situation, Anu chose Prerna over her. Those dreams always caused a bout of tears when she woke up, though she was careful not to let Anu see her cry. She hated herself for feeling like she did, but she knew that Prerna was a gorgeous woman and there were probably few men that did not lose their hearts to her, while she was no wallflower, she knew that she was not as breath taking nor did she have Prerna's strong personality.
Added to that was the fear of what Anu would do when she found out about the man who had gave her confidence to believe in her marriage. She had not meant to feel the connection, but somehow, through out his pain, she had been there for the man, and he had given her hope about the strength of her love. It had been five years since the relationship had grown to where she could not imagine her world without him. It was just the unfortunate luck that the man she felt closer to than any human happened to be Rishab Bajaj.
