...continuation of prologue...

He did not know how he would live without her, but he was a survivor. It would come to him how to live with out his heart. He knew that the tears were forming and it was all he could do not to wail out the unfairness of it. Enough was enough, Rishab thought, he had to go see Prerna's face.

As he ran to catch a glimpse, he was unaware of the tears that were falling freely in his face. Rishab's last glimpse of Prerna was her in chains being dragged away for fourteen years. He knew that if he did not leave now, he would stay forever here hoping for another glimpse of her. It was the hardest thing that he had to do, but he slowly started back to his car...

Prerna watched the last glimpse of Mr. Bajaj's stricken face and it was all she could do to not drop in a heap to the floor. Had it not been for the chains and the guards that were holding her, she knew that she would have. She knew that she had hurt him by insisting that she was the killer, but no way was she going to cause his heart more by breaking that it was his daughter that had fired the trigger.

Prerna knew that he thought that it was because she did not love him that she had done what she had, but there was no way she could tell him that it was because she was so in love with him that she had done what she had. Sometimes when she thought about it, Anu was the Prince Charming of her girlhood dreams, but Bajaj was the man, she as a woman wanted to love forever, but alas, it was not to be so. With a heavy heart, willing the tears not to flow, she dragged her feet with the guards.

Chapter One...

A hand came around her waist. She felt his lips on her cheecks.

"Mr. Bajaj," Prerna admonished, "What are you doing?"

She felt his lips curve before he said, "I'm just stealing few moments with my wife before the kids come in and disturb us. I have missed you so much."

"I missed you so much too. Do you know how hard it was for me to be away from you? I did not know how I survived all those years in jail..."

The sound of door opening caused both of them to break from the embrace...

"I missed you so much too. Do you know how hard it was for me to be away from you? I did not know how I survived all those years in jail..."

The sound of door opening caused both of them to break from the embrace...

The squeak of the door as it opened caused Prerna to wake up from her dream that she was having. As usual it did not differ from her usual dream of where she got out of jail and she was in Mr. Bajaj's arm. It was a sweet reprive from the dreary day in the jail and she dreaded every morning because that meant getting away from her fantasy in the night. It was the only way for her to hold on to sanity.

Lord knew she thought about Mr. Bajaj all the time. Flashes came to her from all the aspect of their life together and gave her strength to carry on one more day. Sometimes she thought about her babies and how they were doing. She bet that Tushar and Dorris had one or two babies running around the house. The image of Bajaj as he gave his grandkids a piggyback ride never failed to make her smile. She hoped that Sneha had learned to let things go and live happily with herself and what she had done. Prem also invaded her thoughts sometimes, but thoughts of him caused her to be weepy or angry, but she loved that kid. She hoped that Mukti had come back and they had made up because they were made for each other. Anu came to her thoughts, but it was with a happy sigh about how much they had learned from each other. She hoped that Anu and Sam were happy with each other because Anu deserved the happiness that she had with Bajaj after all that happened in his life. Sam, she knew, was the right woman for Anu because she was so understanding. She bet that Romeo was in love with Sam by now.

Those were the thoughts that she had when she was happy, but when she was sad, Prerna thought about how no one had come to visit her. Did she not matter to them? With that came anger and heartbreak about how Mr. Bajaj had turned away from her. That thought always made her think about she did not matter to them, when they meant the whole world to her. Even though it was not fair, she sometimes thought about how Sam and Anu also had not come to visit her. Did they ever think about how lonely she might be here? Did Bajaj ever dream of her like she dreamt of him?

The sounds of footstep tore Prerna away from her thoughts. It was one of the police officer. With him were two more police officers, Prerna's had contracted as she thought about why them might might be here. Let it not be because anything happened to my family, she silently prayed.

"Good morning sir," Prerna said out loud. "What brings you here to my cell? Kuch bad news to nahi, na?" The police erased a little bit of fear when he broke into a smile. He looked more human when he smiled, Prerna thought.

"No, Mrs. Bajaj," he replied. "I'm Officer Khan and these are Officers Malhotra and Sharma behind me. We just wanted to let you know that your parole has gone through and that this is your last day here."

The news was so different from what she was preparing to hear that she did something had Prerna thought over it, she would have never done. She ran to Khan arm and enfolged him in a deep hug. Then common sense came back, she pulled herself from his arms. Prerna could feel her face starting to heat up.

"Muje maaf kardiye ji," Prerna stammered out, "ye kya he ki, this is very different new then I thought it was."

"Kuch nahi hay, Mrs. Bajaj," Officer Khan said with a smile. "Mein bhi haapy hoin. I would've done the same too. Well, hope you are happy and now we have to go back." Then, he and the two officers went out of the cell and closed the door.

Normally, that would have brought a bout of depression, but today, nothing could bring her down. She could not wait to be back in her home with Mr. Bajaj and the kids. Prerna had so much things that she wanted to do so she took the one notebook and started making the list.

The whole day Prerna was bubbling with happiness. Aah, to be held in Mr. Bajaj's arm, to watch her children, to go wherever she wanted, and to stay in a room that is bigger than fifteen inch by fifteen inch. After she got out, Prerna thought, she wanted to get back in touch with Prem and made a promise to herself that she would never lash out against him. Maybe she should call Mukti to see if she wanted to go to dinner with her because she missed her goddaughter. Perhaps, Prerna thought with a smile, tomorrow, Mr. Bajaj, Anu, Sam, and I should go to dinner together. It would be fun, just to eat and get in touch with what had happened when she was not there. Maybe, she would write a book about being in jail, or maybe, do a book on jail, or the prisoners…
Prerna wanted to laugh at herself when caught herself being swept about the possibilities that she could do when she got out. As the day gave into night, for the first time in a long time, Prerna looked forward to the morning. Then she started dreaming…

The feeling after getting out of the building that had held her for more time that she would have liked to be in, was priceless. Prerna felt like she should throw her arms out and dance around in circle. In fact, if she had not noticed that people outside in the gate, waiting for her, she would have. She did not know how she could have missed the group standing out there, unless she had been so entranced by the thought of being outside. It probably was that, Prerna thought as she looked at the people that had come to welcome her. There was Mr. Bajaj! And Anu, Sam, Mohini kaki, Indro, Tushar, Doris, Tanisha, Kuki, and Kasak. There was even Prem! Mukti? Prerna thought, where was Mukti? Oh, there she was, next to Bajaj. As she ran forward, something caused her to look at Prem. He had this weird look on his face and then he moved. Behind him, with a weird look that Prerna did not like, was Debo. Debo? What was she doing here? She swore she could hear a familiar voice in her head saying, "Muje dook purakar tume bahot maja aya, leikin aub, mein tume dook purake, maja manungi." Prerna knew that she should recognize the voice, but for the life of her she couldn't. Neither could she shake off the horrible sound of someone cackling in glee. Prerna saw Prem just stand there with a smile when Debo put a leg forward on her path. For the life of Prerna, she could not seem to change her path, even though she knew that she was going to fall very hard if she went near Debo. She tried to scream, but all of a sudden there were images of Prem and Debo laughing at her as she screamed in agony…

Gasp! Prerna jerked awake from her dream. For a minute, she did not know where she was doing in a hard bed and jail. Then as the thoughts that had scattered came back, she could not seem to do anything but shake in fear. With annoyance, she wiped the tears that had started to fall now. This was not the time to indulge your self in a good cry; Prerna thought to herself, you have to pack what pathetic belonging that you have.
Armed with the thought of getting ready to get out of the cell, Prerna banished away the thoughts of her nightmare. In a tattered cloth bag, she put a notebook and few hundred rupees that she had saved.
By the time Office Khan came to escort her out, she was all ready to leave. Excitement warred with surprisingly foreboding as she made her way out of the building. Prerna could not seem to banish the thought that she was stepping out of a rock to go to a hard place…
