Telly's hit jodis

Abhiash, Kajol-Ajay Devgan, John-Bipasha... ask anybody about the reigning jodis of Bollywood and they immediately come up with these names. BT now focusses on the telly world to find out who are the hit real-life pairs there

HEENA GROVER

Figures are approximate earnings per day

GAUTAMI AND RAM KAPOOR

This couple is the talk of the telly world these days, what with Gautami becoming the new Tulsi. She returns to the telly after a long sabbatical. Husband Ram is, meanwhile, one of Ekta's blue-eyed boys. As Jai Walia in Kasamh Se, he is also getting decent TRPs for the soap. "Career-wise we are on a high," accepts Ram, adding, "Things are just going great. Gautami becoming Tulsi is one of the biggest things to have happened on Indian television. I feel if you are happy with your work, everything falls into place."
Ram Kapoor Rs 40,000

Gautami Kapoor Rs 30,000

Television actors are perpetually stuck in the rut of hectic shooting schedules and erratic timings. Of course, their earnings make up for all the hard work they put in to their careers.

While most telly stars are disciplined and systematic investors, there are others who are clueless about plans on making their money work for them.

Rohit Roy, currently focusing on films, calls himself a conservative investor. He states, "I mostly invest in mutual funds and real estate. The recent hike in the interest rate for home loans did affect us. But, now I see interest rates being slashed down. Another good way to save is putting money in fixed deposits. The bank I deal with offers me 10 per cent interest instead of 9.5 per cent."

His brother Ronit Roy, seen in four Balaji's Telefilms prime time serials, thinks otherwise.

According to him, the hike in the interest rate of fixed deposits is marginal and is not very beneficial for those who have their money in other sectors.

He informs, "I dabble in commodities, and equities. Recently, investing in real estate has proved beneficial for me. I earn more on real estate; hence I invest very little in fixed deposits."

Mona Singh, the face of Sony Entertainment Television, strongly believes in playing it safe. She says, "Most of my money is invested in UTI bonds since the returns are fruitful." Her father and chartered accountant take care of her finances.

Talking about the swings in the share market, the Roy brothers say that they faced a huge loss four years ago. Since then, Rohit has kept away from the market while Ronit has taken to mid-term and long-term investments.

"I don't want to play with the market anymore, it's quite risky. I'm not inclined towards it," says Roy junior. Ronit adds, "I don't speculate..so, I don't stand a chance of losing big amounts."

While jewellery is considered a profitable investment, Ram Kapoor has a different opinion to offer. He says, "My wife Gautami has a huge collection of jewellery, but I don't view it as an investment. It's either inherited or bought by me, so there are sentiments attached." He says that their investments are restricted to fixed deposits.

Amrita Singh is unsure of where her money goes. "I've absolutely no idea about my financial investments. I think I invest in mutual funds," Singh signs off.

Bani and Mr. Walia first telly guests in India Day Parade

Kasamh Se's lead pair, Bani and Mr. Walia (Prachi Desai and Ram Kapoor) will become the first telly stars to participate in New York's India Day Parade to mark India's 60th year of Independence.

Ram confirms this saying, "I am very excited and proud to participate in such a historic parade. US Indians have invited us to be a part of their celebration of independence." Along with Prachi and Ram Kapoor, Ram's wife, Gautami, will also accompany them on the trip abroad.

Prachi Desai's mother, Ameeta Desai, speaks on her daughters behalf saying, "Prachi is looking forward to participate in the parade for the first time. Her elder sister Esha will be going with her. It feels great that the US Indians have called her because her serial and her character, Bani is famous among NRIs. It will be Prachi's second trip to New York. Her sister and she will shop together as Prachi likes to shop a lot."

The 27th India Day Parade will be lead by Priyanka Chopra as Grand Marshall along with Jonny Lever as chief guest. Previous guests at the parade have been Bipasha Basu, Ekta Kapoor and Jeetendra

Telly Talk

Professionally she is on a high. Roshni Chopra who plays the second sister Pia in Zee's Kasamh Se, has been noticed for her performance as a money-minded and a self-centred girl. "It is very difficult to play a character like Pia," quips Roshni. "But I love it. As I wonder how could Pia do this to her sister or Jai. I feel rather kicked when fans write to me begging me to leave Jai Walia. They find my act believable so I guess I am doing my job well. It was challenging for me to perform the role since everyone including my husband knows that I am completely opposite to her. The success of the show has brought confidence in me as I got to be a bubbly character as well as an obsessive woman."

Roshni is herself in her other show, Cinemascope on Zee Music, where she interviews celebrities. "I am interested in photography, writing and singing, which I want to pick up once again."

New York beckons Ram

Last time we spoke to Gautami Gadgil (Tulsi of Kyunki) she mentioned she would love to go to New York as she has never been there. Little did she know that her wish would be fulfilled so soon. Her husband Ram Kapoor and his co star Prachi Desai in Kasamh Se will go to The Big Apple. Priyanka Chopra will lead the parade as Grand Marshal while Johny Lever will be the chief guest for the 27th India Day parade in New York. Where Prachi has her sister Esha for company, Ram will take his wife Gautami with him.

A very eager Prachi reveals, "I had gone to New York to receive an award from the Gujarati committee a few months ago but I didn't have time to see the city. This time I surely will." Ram on the other hand says, "Gautami and I plan to extend our stay by a couple of days. I am thrilled to represent India on such a huge platform. Unfortunately we won't be able to take our daughter. But Gautami and I need a break from all that work and this is a great opportunity. I am looking forward to it."

just saw this on rediff.com... 😛 loved the way someone asked why did you marry mr walia 😛 when he is so much older than you.. and to which gautami answered we are the same age 😃 enjoy

'I'm poles apart from what Tulsi is'

Gautami Kapoor is known by many names. She made a spash on television as Gautami Ghatke, when she signed on Ekta Kapoor's Ghar Ek Mandir, and is also known as the Bindhaast girl, after her hit Marathi film.
The actress, who plays Tulsi in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, chatted with Rediff readers about her hit show, her husband Ram Kapoor and more. For those who missed the chat, here's the transcript:

Gautami Kapoor says, Hi there! This is Gautami and I'm ready to take your questions!

VIRGIL asked, Hi Gautami - what is the secret of your calm poise and personality in the serial?
Gautami Kapoor answers, What I appear in television is really unlike what I am in real life. In real life, I'm very hyper and energetic. In fact, my husband says I'm scatterbrained. The poise and the calmness you see, so when Ram saw me on TV, he said, "God I wish you could be like this in real life."

soumitro asked, Is it very challenging to play a role which has been so pouplar with the old tulsi? Are you wary of comparisons?
Gautami Kapoor answers, Yes, it was very challenging. Not only is the role really popular, by someone who has done it for seven years, it's also very unlike who I am. So it's a great challenge, but that's what an actor always looks for.

Omendra asked, What you'll feel if some one else will play the role of tulsi in near future??
Gautami Kapoor answers, A change in any show is always welcome. So I wouldn't have a problem with it. :)

lavanya asked, Hi gautami, I just want to ask you, whether u r going to change ur look in kyunki?
Gautami Kapoor answers, Right now, there is no talk about changing my look. But when it happens, I think all you guys will definitely know.

'I really adore Ba and Krishna Tulsi'

Chitra asked, Hi Gautami, Is there any other big project you are working on? or planning to work?
Gautami Kapoor answers, No, nothing. Right now, my biggest project is my daughter, and then it's my show. :)
Friend asked, How does it feel like working under Ekta Kapoor's banner?
Gautami Kapoor answers, I've worked with Ekta during Ghar Ek Mandir, so my working relationship with her is fantastic. So it felt like coming back home after many years.

rameshwari asked, gautami, who is your favourite person in Kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi
Gautami Kapoor answers, It's difficult to name one because I've made so many friends from the show. But I think I really adore Ba and Krishna Tulsi.

vinu asked, are u married?
Gautami Kapoor answers, Yes, of course I'm married! And I'm also a mother. :)

PM asked, how have you met with Ram first time?
Gautami Kapoor answers, We met on the set of the show we were doing together. And we were good friends for about two years, and we fell in love and got married.

Rony asked, i read wat you answered to Soumitro earlier. You really think people here are so naive to accept such an answer " the role being unlike what you really are and thereby being challenging". I think you are trying to color your views. Its just that you thought this is the best platform to get recognition fast. Or else, who knew you well before you started enacting Tulsi? Although you have been around for a while.
Gautami Kapoor answers, Well honestly, this is probably the biggest opportunity not to take it. But, if you know me personally, you know I'm poles apart from what Tulsi is, and why would I let such a big opportunity go by? And before this, you wouldn't believe, but even though I wasn't doing TV for a while, people still recognise me as Anchaal from Ghar Ek Mandir
Dheeraj asked, Why did u accept Kyunki? Though it's a big flop.
Gautami Kapoor answers, Kyunki is the number one show, even after seven years, on Indian television. And you may not be watching it, but there are a whole lot of other people that do. It's an honour that is the longest running soap on Indian TV and I'm proud to be associated with it.
Avi asked, Well, it will be quite a task to step into a role essayed by Smriti Irani and appreciated by audiences for so long. How does it feel?
Gautami Kapoor answers, Yes it is a big task and I am absolutely open to criticism first. And I'm hoping that the praise will follow.

macmib asked, Hi Gautami,How do u feel working with Ekta Kapoor? Did u feel any tension when u entered in Kyunki as u'd to be in the shoes of Smriti Irani?
Gautami Kapoor answers, Yes I did feel tension because the media hype giving to replacing Smriti was so big. That really weighed on me. But Ram told me "you should come for work, enjoy it thoroughly, and enjoy the rest!" And that's what I've been doing, so I've really been having a blast.

Nehal asked, i don't have any question, but i just wonna to inform you that you are the best. I never watch kyunki until your entry but u created the magic & trust me for others too.
Gautami Kapoor answers, I really have no reaction! :) :)

Digesh asked, Your acting is good but your role is melodramatic and sometimes it must be getting too boring for you right?
Gautami Kapoor answers, It's just been three months. There's no way I'd be bored after only three months!
bhindi asked, How does it feel working with your husband? Do you talk about work at home and does it affect your house life?
Gautami Kapoor answers, No, it doesn't affect my home life. It actually helps because he is an actor also and he understands the pressures the industry can have.

sammy asked, Gautami - Any plans to work in Marathi serials? I know you are the Bindhaast girl!!
Gautami Kapoor answers, No, not at this time. I'm too busy and have my hands full with work and my daughter.

Prachi asked, why dont u cnange ur look as u dont look gud in those aunty type sarees?
Gautami Kapoor answers, Well, I'm a sixty-five year old woman in Kyunki. I have to wear what the role demands.
chamy asked, I just want to ask that How much more episods r going be there??
Gautami Kapoor answers, Good question. Even I don't know the answer to that.

Dipti asked, hi gautami, is it true that you graduated from ruia college in mumbai?
Gautami Kapoor answers, Yes it is.

smritiirani asked, HEY GAUTAMI, DO YOU EVER WATCH BORING SOAPS DIRECTED BY EKTA??? OR JUST ENACT IN THEM SO AS TO EARN NICE MONEY? I HOPE YOU TELL THE TRUTH..
Gautami Kapoor answers, Yes, I watch a lot of television, both Hindi and English. And I have no problem watching the 'saas bahu soaps'

virgilg asked, If Ekta Kappor asks you to quit and replace you back with Smiti - how would you react ?
Gautami Kapoor answers, Well, this role does belong to Smriti and the day she comes back I will gladly step down. I'm very confident that Ekta will give me a clean exit. I totally trust her.

Sheel asked, what is your priority in life work or family??
Gautami Kapoor answers, Of course, family!

coolgal asked, hi!! you are very beautiful and young. How come you married Mr. Kapoor who looks so much more older than you?
Gautami Kapoor answers, He's not old! We're as old as each other. :)

Somendra asked, are you looking for ny movie right, i loved ur short and sweet role in Fanna....?
Gautami Kapoor answers, No, not looking for anything right now as my hands are full. If something comes up, when I have more time, yes, maybe I could take it up.

'If people recognise me as Tulsi, then I think I've made it'

Swai asked, you are good but smriti was best as tulsi, pls leave this serial
Gautami Kapoor answers, Leaving this serial will be Ekta's decision, but thank you for saying I am good. ;)
kevin asked, How was it acting with both abhishek & Aishwarya.
Gautami Kapoor answers, It was great because they are both thorough professionals. And, it was even better dancing with them.

Sheel asked, would you like to become famous as Tulsi or Gautami??
Gautami Kapoor answers, Honestly, I don't know, that's a tough question. But if people recognise me as Tulsi, then I think I've made it.

kravindrapai asked, Why have you chosen small screen whereas an actress like you could go to big screen as well since you are having the talent and all the incredients that is required for the big screen?
Gautami Kapoor answers, First, thank you for the kind words. But for me, any kind of work, whether it's on TV or in films, is welcome. I'm here because I love the medium of acting. So, whatever comes my way first, I'll take that up.

Gautami Kapoor says, Thank you for taking so much time and asking me these questions. It made me feel really special that even though I was away from TV for so long, I've got such a warm welcome back. Keep watching and giving me your feedback. Have a nice day! Cheers!

My childhood friend

There's more drama on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 2. Prachi Desai's re-entry has divided the participants into two warring camps
Back to Section Stories Posted On Monday, November 19, 2007

Vickey Lalwani

Prachi Desai may be popular with viewers but her popularity quotient with Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 2 contestant seems rather low. News is that some participants have flatly refused to welcome back Prachi Desai (Bani of Kasamh Se) in the show.

Prachi gained a re-entry into the show by way of a wild card entry.

This irked Sandhya Mridul, Sonali Kulkarni and Ronit Roy, who are very upset that she made her way back after she was eliminated on Diwali night.

Prachi Desai with her Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa choreographer Deepak
An eye-witness says, "Nobody said even a 'hi' to Prachi. Obviously, Prachi was very disheartened. She didn't expect such cold behaviour. She was crying inconsolably on the first day of her return."

The outcome is that Jhalak 2 is now divided into two distinct camps. While Sandhya, Sonali, Ronit form the first camp, Prachi, Jay Bhanushali (Neev of Kayamath) and Mir Ranjan Negi form the second camp.

After Prachi's return, Jay is also being given the cold shoulder by the anti-Prachi camp. Mridul dragged Jay and tried to make him understand that he should come with her to protest that the wild-card should not be introduced. However, Jay did not get swayed and preferred not to join the anti-Prachi camp.

Sandhya was very aggressive in ensuring that Prachi does not return. She did not want Prachi because Prachi is Ekta's friend now. Once upon a time Ekta was Sandhya's close friend. Things went sour between Sandhya and Ekta, and ever since then, the two have not exchanged a single word.

Negi, however, is not facing the brunt from the anti-Prachi camp since he keeps to himself anyway.

"Negi is an elderly person. The anti-Prachi camp does not misbehave with him," our source further reveals.

When told that Jhalak 2 had broken into two camps, Negi said, "You seem to have all the information. Yes, Jay and I have no problem on Prachi's return. But the other contestants have not taken it kindly. They believe that once out, means out."

Prachi (who had gone to Tirupathi to pray for her comeback) said, "Mrs Negi was the first person to call me up and congratulate on my comeback. Jay is also very happy. I haven't interacted with the others probably because they are very busy with their rehearsals. The competition is getting tougher, I guess."

Sandhya categorically said that she was unhappy that only two contestants (Prachi and Sudha) had been considered for the wild card.

"There is no camp. I did not try to influence Jay. As for Ekta, she doesn't come in the picture for me. But yes, I have expressed my opinion against the way that the wild card functions. Why not consider the other guys who have been eliminated?"
