How Ekta's gift saved Bani from trouble?

Ekta Kapoor gifted her blue eyed girl Prachi Desai (Bani of Kasamh Se) four bracelets that she once used to wear two months back to ward off evil.

Prachi says, "These are very helpful to decrease problems in your life. Recently, I experienced its effect when I was rescued from a huge accident. I could have lost my leg after a car ran over it. But thanks to these bracelets, the accident was not that serious and I escaped with a few stitches. It also gives you mental relief."

"I believe in these things and I have also visited Tirupati and Kali Mandir in Kolkata. Usually, I also visit Shani Mandir on Saturday and Siddhivinayak Mandir on Tuesday once in a month. Sometimes I go late in the night when I finish my shooting or sometimes early morning so that I can perform pooja. God has given me everything so there is no such thing that I could ask for. I just pray that everything should remain fine and whatever I have should remain with me", adds Prachi.

Prachi is appearing for her HSC exams this year which she had missed last year because of shooting. Her only remaining exam is computers which will be on the 21st. She is travelling all the way to Pune for her exams despite an injured leg.

She can't walk without support. On the sets as well she is moving around with the help of a wheel chair and is warning the media not to shoot her like that as she doesn't like it because people treat her as disabled. Sometimes her wound bleeds because of over exertion when she has put her leg up during sleep.

Ram Kapoor is a gadget freak

Mr Walia (Ram Kapoor) of Kasamh Se is passionate about electronic products. Last month Ram went to Thailand with his wife Gautami and daughter Sia for nine days. He picked up a digital camera from there. Now he wants the new Nokia phone that will be launched next month.

According to his wife Gautami, Nokia should soon be offering her husband special discounts as he not only buys all their models but also gifts them to others.

Says Gautami, "Ram loves electronic items very much. He changes his cell phone every month. Currently he uses Nokia's Communicator 9300 (Part-I). He is also going to buy another new phone next month. Nokia is launching their new model next month so he is looking forward for it. He always buys Nokia phones."

"Ram also asks me to change my cell phones after every three months. He is regular Nokia buyer. I'm sure when they come to know that he is their regular customer they will offer him some concessions next time. He not only gifts phones but also gifts other electronic products to everyone. Sometimes he doesn't require an occasion for gifting electronic items."

"Last year his grandmother came here to visit us and that time he gifted her a television set. Our relatives and friends also take advice from him before buying any electronic products. He knows everything about I-pods, computers. He has excellent knowledge about every electronic product which will be coming and also which is existing in the market."

"He also likes to read books about it. Whenever he is free from his work and at home, he prefers to watch channels like Discovery, Travel and Living. He also asks me to watch those channels instead of watching music channels though he loves music."

Ram and Gautami got married to each other three years ago. Ram has got tremendous popularity for his role in Kasamh Se.

TELETALK - Bonding with his beti

R am Kapoor recently went to Phuket for a vaca tion with his wife
Gautami and nine-month-old daughter Sia. It seems, this was the
first time after Sia's birth that Kapoor spent quality time with his
    bundle of joy.
On returning from the trip, he says, "I actually discovered my
daughter in the few days we were together." He adds that she would
wake up and ask for him and sleep only when he was around.

Now, the actor is back to his busy shooting schedules. It seems Sia
is constantly looking out for her father. Better luck next time

    Mom-ent of despair

The baby of the Kasamh Se team, 18-year old Prachi Desai, aka Bani,
hates the idea of playing a mother

    SUBHASH K JHA

Kasamh Se girl, Prachi Desai, is unhappy with the generation leap in
her successful serial. She isn't the first young TV sector to be put
off by the wrinkle-motivated demands on her persona. And Prachi is
certainly not the last to let out an antageing blast. She reveals
her displeasure rather vocally, "I hate the idea of playing a
mother. I am just 18. The mere of what lies ahead in the show gives
me goosebumps. It was quite depressing when we (Ram Kapoor and
herself) had a twohour narration with Nivi (Nivedita is the creative
head). She told me that we were to have kids. It looks so sad to
have a child with a 40-year old man when you are just 18. And so I
decided not to prepare for the role. These guys should be put in
jail for making me do this!"
Prachi appeared for her Board exams in March this year from the
University of Pune. She was only 17 years old when she started
playing Bani. Recalls Prachi, "I agree there are girls who become
mothers at 18 but rarely out of their own choice. They are either
raped or forced by family pressure to conceive. Out of 10, maybe
only one becomes a mother out of choice at that age. Secondly, I
have just started my career. To be made to do a role of a mother, I
think, is too soon for me. I tell myself that they saw me capable of
doing this and hence have offered me the role."
If she's so appalled, then why do it? "Soaps show what the
audience wants to watch. I come from a middle- class background and
the scenes that I do with my screen-sisters, at times, are what
actually would happen in a middle-class house. It's just that the
scenes are a little exaggerated, with lots of drama. But then, if
there's no drama then there would be no fun, right? I guess soaps
are all about what people really want to see."

    New Tulsi?

Here's the biggest shocker of the year. The buzz is that Smiti (Tulsi) Irani is being replaced by Gautami Gadgil (actor Ram Kapoor's wife), in Ekta Kapoor's Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

While Smriti is crying herself hoarse saying things are fine between her and Kapoor, the story about Smriti's replace-ment appears to have come straight from Balaji.

Is this Ekta's way of spanking a naughty Tulsi, proving that no one is indispensable?

    Goodbye Smriti, welcome Gautami!
    By: Vickey Lalwani
    April 26, 2007

It's the reinvention of Tulsi Virani, the venerable matriarch of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, and Smriti Irani doesn't have a place on the show anymore

    Past

Kal Ki Kahaani: Smriti Z Irani

The last time there was so much curiosity surrounding Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, it was when Mihir Virani died in 2001 (only to be resurrected due to public outcry).

Now, the buzz is that the venerable Tulsi Virani will have an accident, leaving her face badly mangled thus requiring plastic surgery.

This is being done in order to make room for Gautami Kapoor, who will replace Smriti Z Irani in the show that made her a household name.

Although no one from Balaji will admit to this shocking change on record, we have it from a very reliable source that Gautami, who has been on a sabbatical from acting for two years, will step into Smriti's shoes soon.

Over then to the new Tulsi, who refuses to admit to the new role, but says it's a big opportunity.

    You've been chosen to play Tulsi's character…

I still don't believe that Smriti Irani is quitting, but yes, I have been in talks with Ekta Kapoor. Ekta sent me a message saying she has a very good role for me and we decided to meet.

But later, she left for Los Angeles. During that time, I got a call from Balaji saying they wanted me for a new character in Kyunki. I told them I would first meet with Ekta (pauses).

    Go on…

By that time, news started filtering in that I was doing Tulsi's role in Kyunki.

I had no clue! I met up with Ekta, and she simply said she had a character in mind for me but wanted to iron out some aspects about it first.

    Present

Aaj Ki Tulsi Virani: Gautami Kapoor

Ekta hasn't told you that you will be playing Tulsi Virani?

No. She has just said it's a very powerful role.

Are you ready to play granny?

I don't want to limit myself. I have no problems about putting grey in my hair for a role.

Actors who have readily greyed have clicked more on television than those who have not.

Ronit Roy, for one. And yes, Smriti too. She is younger than me. And let's not forget my husband Ram Kapoor, aka Jai Walia in Kasamh Se.

Tulsi is perhaps the biggest character on Indian television…

I know. I myself can't see Kyunki without Tulsi. I don't think Kyunki can exist without Tulsi.

If I am playing Tulsi, there will be a lot of pressure on me. But what is life without challenges? I am not even expecting great feedback. I am ready for criticism.

Will you be paid as much as Smriti is getting?

I don't expect to be paid even half of what Smriti is getting. Smriti made this character huge and it would be unfair if I even think of her remuneration.

Tulsi's role will need you on the sets for very long hours and you have a 10-month old baby, Sia.

Yup. But I have a very good support system in my mother and mother-in-law.

I stay at Napean Sea Road, my mother-in-law lives in Kemps Corner and my mother is at Prabhadevi. Both are not far from where I am. Plus, I have a very good maid.

Did you discuss your decision with Ram?

Of course, and he has been very supportive. In fact, he's been saying that I should return to television with something substantial.

Kyunki is a very crowded show. Will you be able to get along with so many people?

I have never had problems with anybody on the sets. I don't see myself not getting along with someone.

    Do you know Smriti personally?

Yes, I know her. Ram was doing a Balaji show called Kavita with her. That was when Kyunki had just begun and Smriti was not as big as she is today.

Are you going to call her before you start shooting?

I don't think there will be any bad blood between us if I play Tulsi. I am not taking away anybody's role.

It has just come to me. Why create an issue over this? Where is the need for me to call her up and say 'Oh, you are stepping down'
    ?

Summer heat doesn't affect our soap queens!

The heat is on and as we find ways to deal with the soaring temperature, our television beauties continue to lap on layers of make up and heavy saris and jewellery. Looks like the seasonal changes don't affect the stars' and its only mere mortals like us that feel need to change our clothes according to the temperatures.

We speak to popular TV actresses on how they manage to look absolutely stunning in their heavy sarees as we continue to perspire just by looking at them

    Roshni Chopra (Pia, Kasam Se)
It's not just in summer but every season we have to wear heavy dresses and jewellery. As an actress it's a professional hazard for us but I personally wear my own costume and jewellery to avoid the brunt of heat and heaviness. I generally do this to avoid reactions like rashes which are the common occurrence in such cases. While in the night every actress has to bear the heat from lights 24/7. But the Balaji house has AC floors which are cooling for us and for relaxation I take rest in my make-up room which is also air-conditioned. I also drink lots of coconut water to avoid dehydration.

    Ekta Kapoor

Balaji soaps are extremely popular in Turkey; government officials of the country confess that they have been addicted to it ever since they got a taste of Ekta Kapoor's K-soaps. It all started with representatives of Ministry of Tourism (Turkey) made a trip to India and were overwhelmed by the soaps on air. Now they have invited Ekta and her team to explore locations in Turkey and can a few episodes. Naturally, the cast and crew of Kasamh Se and Kayamath are flying to Turkey at the end of this month for a 15-day schedule. Creative heads at Balaji are already in a scurry planning twists and turns in plots that will land the principal characters in Turkey.

Says Ekta Kapoor, "The locals of Turkey are quite fond of our soaps. In spite of the cultural differences they are always clued into our soaps. The tourism department have invited us and requested us to shoot a couple of episodes there. They are looking at exploiting Turkey as destination for soap-makers and filmmakers alike. Our production house representatives have already visited locations there and we should be soon flying off."

Ekta further explains that filming in foreign locales is a welcome change for the actors and the viewers alike. As for the cast members they are yet to realise the future course of the story-line.

Naman Shaw from Kasamh Se further adds, "All I know is that we are heading to Turkey on May 28. I'm definitely, excited as for the storyline we have not been informed by our creative team."

Prachi Desai and Ram Kapoor in Kasamh Se

Roshni Chopra aka Pia in Kasamh Se, says, "We have been told that we will be leaving on May 28. We are probably going to shoot there for five to six days." But, there is a hitch. "For my honeymoon, my husband Siddharth and I planned that we would go to Turkey and then Prague. Now, I don't want to visit the same place once again. So, I am trying my best to convince Siddharth that we should go to Spain and Prague," she adds.

Last time, when the unit of Kasamh Se went to Dubai, Ram and Roshni did not get enough time for shopping. "Whenever we shoot outdoors, we shoot for at least 20 hours a day. This time, I will make sure that I take time out for my shopping and sight-seeing. I plan to buy a few carpets from there," she says.

    Naman Shaw's relationship with God

Naman Shaw (Nakul of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi) says that he only visits temples when he wants something from God.

Last time, Naman visited the Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai six months back. However, this time his new serial Kasturi has just started and he wants his role to become popular. So he is planning to visit the temple again.

"Whenever I feel the need, I visit the temple. However, I never say thank you. Next time whenever I visit, I will say sorry for not coming to say thank you and will once again ask God for something! This time I want to go as my new show has came on air (Naman is playing Girish in Kasturi)," says Naman.

He adds, "Whenever I go to the temple I never perform puja. I am not religious and never perform puja at home too. However, I do believe in God. I even say my wish in the mouse's ear when I visit Siddhivinayak, as there is a belief that if you say your wish in its ear, it will definitely be fulfilled by Ganesha,"

On the temples he has visited, he says, "As of now, I have only visited Siddhivinayak and the Hare Ram Hare Krishna Temple at Juhu in Mumbai. I have been to Kalighat Mandir in Kolkata and the Balaji temple in Bangalore.

"Recently, we had been to Pune for a picnic. There, we went to a mandir at the Pune–Mumbai road. I do not remember the name of the temple. However, it was a Shiva mandir. Ekta made us (Prachi Desai, Bani from Kasamh Se and me) climb many steps."

Naman is doing three serials of Balaji currently - Kyunki, Kasamh Se and Kasturi and is fast becoming the blue-eyed boy of Ekta. In Kasturi, he is playing the parallel lead. Naman had participated in Zee TV's Cinestar Ki Khoj in 2005.

After their mother's death, Bani, Pia and Rano came from Mount Abu to live with Jai Walia in Mumbai. Unfortunately this was the beginning of the end of the love that these three sisters shared between them as Bani and Pia fell in love with the same man. Now after a five year leap history will repeat itself with another set of sisters — Tanvi, Gayatri and Nivedita. They too live with a powerful man called Aparajit Deb (Ronit Roy) and two of them will fall in love with the same guy Moksh and this will lead to a bitter love triangle in the serial once again. But before things go wrong get to know the actors who will play the new characters in the soap.

    Sumona Chakravarty

Sumona began her career as a child artiste and worked in films like Mann and Vidyarthi. Besides the movies, she also did a few commercials for Parle G and SBI bonds. The actress who can also be seen on DD in How's That, a cricket based show didn't mind taking on more work and auditioned for Kasturi, but got selected to act in Kasamh Se. Describing her role she says, "My character is just like Arunima Sharma's Rano. She is very studious and is focused on her career. Boys and parties are kept at a distance. Like Rano I too am into reading books and always carry a novel with me to the sets."

    Anu Sinha

Anu's a familiar face with the audience as many got to first see her in Remix where she played the ditsy Meher and when the serial wound up she entered Kahaani… Unfortunately Meher didn't get a chance to make her mark in Kahaani because, "The character got messed up in the generation leap," she confesses. However, she is looking forward to the good times once more with Kasamh Se because she is confident that the new generation (which she is an integral part of) will add zing to the show.

Anu plays the younger version of Pia (Roshni Chopra) and like her she is an, "Ambitious go-getter who knows how to get her way in life. So far she is positive, but you never know how the story will shape up. The focus will remain on the three sisters for some time till things start getting complicated," says Anu. When asked who along with her will form a part of the love triangle she says, "Nothing is certain at the moment. It is yet to be decided on how the triangle will shape up because the creative team wants to see who shares a better chemistry with Moksh on screen first."

    Abhimanyu Rana:

The man whose character will cause a lot of heartburn between two sisters as the story develops is allergic to academics and after finishing school opted for a correspondence course instead of college. Abhimanyu was always more inclined towards showbiz. He participated in this year's Gladrags Mr India but didn't go to far, but Lady Luck was with him when too like his colleagues went to audition for Kasturi. He wanted to play the male lead in the serial, but was chosen to play a significant character in Kasamh Se. This state level basketball player from Rajasthan will be the younger version of Jai Walia on the show. Describing his role, Abhimanyu says, "He is a fun-loving and classy guy who is in awe of Jai Walia." But ask him about his onscreen love life and he says, "I don't know how things will shape up." We will have to wait and watch about that.

    Shrishti Deshmukh

The actress who plays Tanvi, the eldest of the three sisters was actually finalised to play the lead in Kasturi, but landed up in Kasamh Se as Ekta Kapoor felt she was too skinny to play the lead! Shrishti isn't upset with the change as she says, "I am more on the skinny side and Ekta wanted someone with a bit more flesh on her body as the character is a Delhi girl. I am happy with my role in Kasamh Se as I can easily identify with the character because I am more like Tanvi, who is a homely, loving and caring girl."

Unlike many who come to Mumbai to become a star, Shrishti left her hometown Pune to work as an IT professional in a multi national company. But this self-confessed soap addict quickly switched careers when she realised that her happiness lay in serials. So she quit her job and debuted on DD with a weekly serial. Then came the Balaji audition and now she is here to stay in TV land.
