Bye bye saas bahu

- Harshikaa Udasi

ARTS & STYLE

A powerful breed of women rules the prime time

Jai is caught in the pain of love. The father-to-be is on the brink of divorce from his wife, Bani, whom he loves deeply. But she hates him. The tussle between the couple is giving sleepless nights to Sudha Aggarwal, a mother of two. The middle-aged, suave Jai is as much her favourite as is the 20-something Bani, and their family life is her daily dose of entertainment.
Recently, when Mumbai's cablewallahs pulled the plug for two days, it was nothing short of a disaster for people like Sudha (and here's an increasing tribe).
No doubt, television has tightened its hold over the country's populace, and television stars are no less than movie celebrities: a larger-than-life status, media attention and a crazy fan following. For actors, TV is suddenly the place to be.
Channels are of course cashing in on the burgeoning medium; slugging it out in a free-for-all, ensuring that audiences are riveted to that couch. In the last three months, there have been new shows on every channel: Sony-Vaidehi and Akela; Star One-Resham Dankh, Naya Office Office; Star Plus-Viraasat, Thodi Si Zameen...Thoda Aasman, Karam Apnaa Apna; and Zee-Shaabash India, Johny Aala Re and Banoo Mein Teri Dulhan.
In September, the fight goes full throttle as reality formats featuring celebrities make a comeback. Sony's Jhalak Dikhla Jaa-Dancing with the Stars has eight popular faces including cricketer Ajay Jadeja, actor-host Pooja Bedi, actor Rati Agnihotri, and TV face Mona 'Jassi' Singh. Sony has roped in Farha Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shilpa Shetty as judges. Keeping step with the rival is Star One, which is back with season two of Nach Baliye, with ten new jodis. Saroj Khan, Malaika Arora Khan and Kunal Kohli will take the judges' chair. Sahara One joins the fray with talent hunt Super Stars judged by Urmila Matondkar.
The action doesn't stop there. There are more new themes, more new faces, more new shows. Star One brings you Lucky, a one-hour weekly about a teenage boy who has been designated saviour of the world, Antariksh, a daily adventure series about space and a new Balaji show. Zee has yet another woman-centric serial Betiyaan, while Sony will air the Indianised Big Brother and Extreme Makeover besides two action shows.
From an idiot box to an impressive box, television is big and so are television stars. No geeky secretaries or saccharine-oozing bahus; the new television superstars essay closer-to-life characters. A breed of powerful women are here: Zee has righteous Bani in Kasamh Se and dark-skinned Saloni in Saat Phere. Sony has the progressive bahu Sneha in Thodi Khushi Thode Gham and Star Plus has its oomph factor Priyanka in the mega-starrer Viraasat. Zee seems to have the only male icon in Mills 'n' Boon-styled tycoon Jai Walia of Kasamh Se.
It is big money, too. And none of our top actors thinks anything of working 14-hour shifts without breaks for 22-26 days a month.
Ram Kapoor, who has been playing Jai for the last six months, says it has been a long way to the top. He started in the afternoon slot with Ghar Ek Mandir almost six years ago, took a break to do films like Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi and an English film, Missed Call, and made a strong comeback with a prime time Balaji character.
In his mid-30s, Ram plays a character at least ten years older, who falls in love with a much younger girl. But he seems okay. "I love to play characters as different as possible from the real me," he says. "I knew how this character was shaping up, the exact look that he would be given. It was exciting." Kasamh Se was first of the Balaji shows to have intimate bedroom scenes.
Prachi Desai, who plays the simple Bani, is rumoured as the latest Ekta favourite. This may prove quite beneficial for the petite 17-year-old whose track in the show has been reportedly altered to give her character interesting hues.
For Sangeeta Ghosh, Ravi Chopra-directed multistarrer Viraasat marked her return to the prime time slot, since playing Pammi in Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand. "I have no qualms in admitting it's a big kick to be on prime time," says the actor. She played Veera in Rabba Ishq Na Hove besides co-hosting Nach Baliye-1.
Her current role has been in the news for the steamy scenes with co-actor Rohit Roy, but she says she is not averse to the 'sexy' tag. "When we shot for the scene with me under a black satin sheet, the viewers didn't know that I had jeans and a top on. We just have to act out our roles," she says. She believes that acting is about "reacting convincingly to situations" and to achieve that, she takes up only one show at a time.
Rajshri Thakur's maiden TV show Saat Phere has put Zee ahead of Star Plus in the ratings. The actor who played the lead in an Indo-French film Hawa Aane De, confesses that she thought the producers hadn't seen her photograph when they called her to audition for Saloni. "All they wanted to know was whether I had long hair," she says. The dusky actor later realised that the story was about a dark-skinned girl who faced problems due to her complexion.
The Thakur household is proud of their daughter who has inspired dark-skinned boys and girls across India to shed their inhibitions and pursue their dreams. For a country obsessed with skin colour, that's a lot. "I feel happy when I realise that my character not only is popular but has also influenced people," she says.
Shveta Salve who is eagerly waiting to put on her dancing shoes in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa already has her hands full. She plays Dr Ritu Mishra, a psychiatrist, on Left Right Left on SAB TV, and the male basher corporate honcho Malaika Banerjee on Sahara's Kittu Sab Jaanti Hai, besides hosting PopKorn on Zoom.
"Honestly, I'd rather be known as an actor. But people have seen me only in glamorous roles and associate a certain image with mine," says the ex-Gladrags Mega Model finalist.
Deepa Parab is trying to keep Sony's rating steady with her portrayal of the modern day bahu in Thodi Khushi Thode Gham. The theatre girl has done Marathi teleserials, too. "I have also been lucky in getting great directors," says Deepa. "But sometimes, daily soaps turn out to be no-brainers. You end up reacting to a camera which doesn't satisfy the actor in you." The popularity is something she enjoys. Jains walking up to her and greeting her with Jai Jinendra (Sneha is a Jain in the serial) and calling her by her screen name is a great feeling.
One male actor creating ripples on television is Sumit Raghavan, better known as Dr Saahil Sarabhai, the mollycoddled son of Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai. Sumit started as a child artiste, acted in Marathi plays Mala Bhent Havi Ho-which won him the award for best child artiste-and Rang Umaltya Manache. Sumit also tested his dubbing skills, but was back on TV for a Star Plus show Ek Do Teen and a comedy called Shubh Mangal Savadhan.
However, it was his role in Sarabhai... that made him famous. "Saahil was actually not funny, but it was the amazing lines scripted for him that made it appear so", he says. Sumit plays Savio, the humorous bhoot on Akela and Shantanu on Resham Dankh. "My TV career is going fine now. I do limited shows because I need to give my family also some time," says the father of two.
With star status and media glare, can controversy be far behind. Ram Kapoor got a taste of this when his comments about a male co-star led to articles questioning his sexuality. The married Ram says that it was a fun story, done to reveal his humorous side. TV actors are realising that being in the news helps. Says Sangeeta Ghosh, "Publicity, whether good or bad, always works. So there is no need to be judgmental about it."
They are working their way up and definitely Bollywood dreams are on the horizon. But not at the cost of their blossoming TV career. They are smart enough to realise that no KJo film is awaiting them, but are on the lookout for that meaty role. Till then, tellywood is happening!

As Ram reveals birthday plans...
By: Tushar Joshi
September 11, 2006

Ram Kapoor
Ram Kapoor, who plays Jai Walia on Zee's Kasamh Se, recently celebrated his birthday on the sets of the show. However, he wasn't ready for a surprise visit from his wife Gautami with a cake in tow. Not only did she make his day by spending time with him but also gifted him his dream watch.

Right model

Says Ram, "We were in Dubai some time back, shopping. I have a huge fetish for watches so I was checking out this Omega Titanium C-Master watch. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. However, I didn't have time to pick it up then."

This year, when Ram received a present from Gautami with Omega written on it, he was excited. "I actually did a somersault, but not in my wildest dreams did I imagine she would have picked up the exact same model. I think Gautami must have seen me look at the watch in Dubai and memorised the model number or something."

Watch it!

The actor is now proudly flaunting the watch on the sets of his show. "This is the best birthday gift I could get this year. I later found out that Gautami visited the Omega showroom at CR2 and placed a special order for this model since they didn't have it. I was totally floored by her gesture," he says.

Kapoor admits that long hours don't allow him to spend time with his wife and daughter. "I have decided to take Gautami out for Lage Raho Munnabhai and dinner this weekend. I think she deserves it. And since she loves Hindi movies, I'm sure she'll have a good time."

Talk-a-thon

Celebrations apart, Ram recently lost his voice because of a viral attack. "I had a lot of congestion in my chest. To top that, I was saying these really long dialogues that went up to four-five scenes. All of a sudden I realised I couldn't speak. I was actually whispering. That's when I panicked," he says.

But Ram couldn't put his schedule on hold. "I went to the doctor and he gave me this really heavy medication. Thankfully, my voice is on the way to recovery. By Monday, I should be back with a bang."

Enjoying the success of this show, he says, "It's a team effort. Everyone on the show is responsible for the success, including the technicians and writers. In fact, I took the whole team of the show for dinner on my birthday. We had a blast."

Ekta Kapoor

Ekta plans grand b'day bash for Bani

Ekta Kapoor does everything in style. The producer has a reputation of being extremely generous when it comes to throwing parties for her friends and actors. Tonight Ekta is hosting a party for the actress who she considers her 'adopted child'. Today, Prachi Desai aka Bani in Kasamh Se, celebrates her 18th birthday and her mentor Ekta Kapoor plans to celebrate it in a grand way. "Its true, Ekta is throwing a party for my daughter," enthuses Ameeta Desai, Prachi's mother. Ameeta further adds that Ekta's is very supportive of Prachi.

"She was just an ordinary girl before her career took off in full swing. Life has been different for Prachi. In fact things have changed drastically after my daughter shot to fame."

So, what was Ameeta's reaction when Prachi told her that she'd be celebrating her birthday with her friends and co-actors? "Until yesterday we weren't aware of any such plans. We'd decided that Prachi's birthday will be a very family affair. We wanted to spend the whole day together," says Ameeta.

But Ameeta is equally thrilled about Ekta's party, arranged specially for her daughter. "Prachi is very excited and looking forward to it. But I don't think I will be able to attend the party. I will feel awkward joining the young crowd," she says.

Incidentally, Ekta has just invited a few people from the industry. Apart from the unit of Kasamh Se, a few friends and some people from the channel will be present for the bash.

Scissor me not?

After the highly debated film censorship, it's now TV content which is the hot target of snipping fingers!

Post the 7/11 blasts there were debates about news channels flashing gory photographs of the victims. Talking about the daily sagas - be it the rape sequence in Kyunki Saas Bhi Bahu Thi, or the multiple-extra marital affairs in almost all shows, the cozy scenes in Viraasat and Kasamh Se and the violence depicted in, believe it or not, cartoon channels…..all this and much more has come under scrutiny!

A recent censorship order was passed by the Bombay High Court blanking out 'A' and 'U/A' content aired on TV. Do we really need a regulatory body which will decide what we watch at home, sitting as couch fries?

Riya V. Anandwala corners some actors from the television fraternity who give their piece of mind on this controversial issue!

Ram Kapoor- "Its mere hypocrisy!"

I am totally disgusted with the idea of censoring television content. It's an extremely hypocritical situation when these parents are opposing the English channels. If they intend to condemn their children from watching adult stuff, they first need to control internet through which children are exposed to anything and everything. According to my knowledge there is nothing vulgar or obscene on television that it should have a censor board! In worse to worst situations we need to have a system by which we can lock up channels, as they have abroad.

hope it is not posted before! sorry if it is!😳

Did you ever think the telly could turn you into a teetotaller?
Sandhya Menon
Saturday, September 23, 2006 17:37 IST
Rakshanda Khan: Whatever film it is, I catch myself thinking about some aspect of my life while watching it

Did you ever think the telly could turn you into a teetotaller? Books, movies, television and music — they have a greater influence on the psyche than we give them credit for...

Ever watched a film and spotted the person in the movie in real life? Or picked up a book because it was based on the life of so-and-so? Well, real life influencing the arts is old hat. Some of the best, most moving cinema and literature have come from real life. Honestly, the reverse is also perfectly true. And that, really, is what we are talking about.

We don't mean watching a life-changing film leading you to quit your job and save the world. "I can give you examples of both — life changing and regular influences," says veejay Juhi adding that having read 'The Celestine Prophecy', there have been subtle but lasting changes in her life. "I might sound all philosophical but I realised that at the core, we are all the same," she says.

Gandhigiri

Someone who whole-heartedly agrees with a particular medium bringing about attitudinal changes is Sharmilla Khanna. "I can't believe how much 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' has changed my daughter and me. I now think twice before I get aggressive even if I am wronged. I prefer to try politeness first. Even my domestic helps have changed the way they behave," says this no-nonsense event organiser.

Khanna attributes this sweeping change to the simple way the Mahatma has been portrayed. While she says all schools should screen this movie as the children will understand and uphold the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi better, singer Kailash Kher's influences have been more subtle.

Of life and love

"I was four years old when I started singing Kabir without really knowing what I was singing. And reading and understanding Kabir was not a blindingly enlightening moment, it is a slow process of constantly understanding life," he says adding that he feels he is a more mature person than others because of his love for books about saints, love and life.

And television actor Rakshanda Khan agrees, "I just have to watch a film every night. I catch myself thinking about some aspect of my life while watching it." She says she either identifies with a character or a particular situation in the film.

Music to the soul

The visual medium usually has greater power to influence but music too has the power to change and that too subtly. "You tend to use music and music tends to use you. When it's a really hectic day, and I am rushing through work and suddenly hear a track that I like, my entire mood changes to a happier one," says Juhi.

Dandiya ramva chalo

A. L. Chougule
Posted online: Friday, September22, 2006 at 0000 hours IST

Tele-visual religion may not be about regular worship but it definitely gives a lot of importance to faith and festivities. So strong is the connection between religion and fictional drama that reel life imitates real life without missing out on a single festival. Ganesh Chaturthi is over and Navratri is about to begin. As dandiyas will be played for nine days in parts of Maharashtra and whole of Gujarat and the venues will resemble Lord Krishna's raas leela where gopis and gwalas of Vrindavan become one with the sensual surroundings, the big fat families of television dramas will not lag behind, no matter whether the family is Punjabi, Rajasthani or Bengali. But if it is a Gujarati family there's every reason to celebrate Navratri festival in a real grand way. And Hats Off Productions that produces Baa Bahoo Aur Baby will not let down viewers...

On the day the Navratri festival kicks off, producers Aatish Kapadia and J. D.Majethia have planned a one-hour special episode of Baa Bahoo Aur Baby that the makers claim will be a sheer treat to watch. Looking at the grandly decorated set at Swati Studio in Goregaon it's hard to disbelieve them. It is as if Lord Krishna's raas leela is here sensual gopis, mischievous gwalas, dhols, colourful costumes, lights, Baa, baby, bahus, betas, Gattu and of course the dandiya queen Phalguni Pathak, all set to celebrate the festival in traditional Gujarati style. The action is in the huge courtyard of Thakker family's haveli where Phalguni makes her dramatic entry. But let's not reveal what happens before and after. "Every serial will have Navratri episode," says Majethia. "Since our show revolves around a Gujarati family, viewers would expect something different and grand. So we decided to go for one-hour Navratri special episode on September 22, which will have several highlights, dramatic highpoints and an absolutely unexpected end. It's a paisa vasool episode." One highlight is obviously dandiya queen Phalguni who will sing four Navratri-related songs. "Star played a major role in getting her on the show though we know her since our college days and she has been watching our plays for years," says weekend soap's writer, producer and creative director Aatish Kapadia. In fact, according to Aatish, Phalguni is a great fan of Baa Bahoo Aur Baby. Confirms the dandiya queen, "I love the serial. When I am at home on weekends, I don't miss it. I like everything about the serial. The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have repeat telecast. It's an honour to be on this show. " While Phalguni will sing her heart out and the Thakkers will dance to the beats of Hussainbhai's dholak the special episode will see the return of Harshad in the Thakker family after several years of suppressed emotions and separation, both for the mother and son. "How and why he is there will be shown but whether Baa has forgiven him and accepted his home-coming will be revealed a week later," informs Majethia who plays Harshad, adding further that some of the other highlights of the episode include a dandiya competition, a humour track besides some strong emotional elements. "BBAB is known for its strong emotional ingredients. Every episode has at least one emotional track that often becomes its highlight," adds Aatish while claiming that BBAB has helped STAR Plus make its weekend band strong. "Despite severe competition from other channels with movies, thrillers and other genres of programming BBAB gets TVR of 6 to 7 which is pretty good." According to Aatish, the show's impressive performance is a result of an excellent teamwork and democratic functioning of the unit. "Story and characters are discussed and debated in detail and everyone has the right to air his views and give inputs. The panel of directors has the full freedom to capture the written words into visual and give them a cinematic vision. Deven (Bhojani) as associate director takes care of the performances," says Aatish.

It is probably a bit difficult to think of BBAB without the lovable and child-like Gattu, playedby Deven. He is five-foot nothing, has childish face and a portly visage. He certainly seems to be an odd man out in the crowd of today's chocolate faces and toughies on television. But the talented actor has made up for his shortcomings with his acting prowess and has stood out with his role in the show. Though mentally-challenged, Gattu with his child-like takes and behaviour has not only driven the Thakkar family crazy but also entertained viewers to the hilt. "When Gattu's character was conceived I wasn't sure that I would be playing the role. But Aatish and JD were convinced that the role was mine and that I was going to play it," recalls Deven who was not too sure whether he will be able to play the character convincingly.

I have been noticing this all along, and the latest article Matched Kundalis only for marraige is proof as the article it's refuting as been pulled offline...

I'm not sure if anyone notices, but Kundali Konnection was pulled out of the net. All the e-articles that are false like Naman and Ram in the Mirror are pulled off within a day or two. So was Ekta is running scared.

see the link for kk has been replaced....
as well as that for Ekta running scared...also try to find the original not cached Naman Pushkar article from the mirror...it's gone too...

But the Article Kasam Se in Bangkok which said Bangkok might not be the destination but Jai and Pai... while Bani goes foreign to confess her love in a foreign country...was not pulled out. For that reason, I really wasn't surprised at the turn of event of KS...because it was exactly as the article mentioned...
