Bani sat on the floor shattered at the sudden discovery. Tears were flowing continuously. Jai… Jai did not marry her willingly… He married her for Krishna aunty… Why didn't her tell me before? What is the need for marrying her? Did Krishna aunty force him? Why did Krishna aunty do that? But… but she was not even alive at that time. Then how? If Krishna aunty was not there… then… did she force him to promise? Is that the reason he waited for her to come to age? Is that the reason, he proposed her after seeing her the first time after seven years? But what is the reason for sacrificing his life, just for the promise (if it is)? He could have convinced his mother. Krishna aunty doesn't force any one… Does she? Did she? Is that why, Jai is avoiding her? Is that why, he doesn't even want to see her? Is that why, he doesn't even want to speak about her? Is she that bad? She thought he liked her? Isn't it? But is that so? Is she not even desirable? Does he hate her, that much? Was his life spoilt because of marrying her? May be, Yes… Jai could have married any one. But… he married her… She always longed to be with him and his family… Even Krishna aunty has teased her… A slight smile came on her lips drenched in tears.
"Ek na ek din tumhein shaadi karke jaana toh padega naa?" Krishna asked.
"Aunty, mujhe kahin nahin jaana." 12 year old Bani said firmly. "Main shaadi nahin karoongi. Main yahin rahoongi." She said in a firm voice innocently and lied down on her lap.
"Toh ek kaam karte hai. Mere hi ghar aa jaana. Jis ghar mein bhi tu jaayegi roshan hoga woh ghar. Humare ghar aa jaana shaadi karke. Main khayal rakoongi tumhari hamesha ki tarah." She pinched her cheeks.
She thought of the fate. A sarcastic smile came on her lips. She came to the same house. But the person who longed was no more and she was alone now... And her words were proved incorrect. She became the darkness in the house. And she spoilt her son's life…
At that time, she heard a mild knock at the door. Before, she could answer, the door was opened. She saw Tony entering with a tray in his hands.
"Ma'am, aapka breakfast?!" Tony said.
"Uh!!!" This was the only thing Bani managed to say.
"Kha lijiye. Aapne kal raat dinner bhi nahin kiya." He said patiently.
Bani slightly nodded her head.
Tony excused himself and left the place.
Bani kept on staring into empty place in searching of something. She then blinked and looked at the tray. She remembered Jigyasa's words Woh humare saath nahin khati, bas. Lekin zaroor kha leti hai… She shook her thoughts and extended her hand to the tray. She took a toast and had a bite. She sent them into the stomach by sipping tea. She ate half bowl of 'poha' and kept the remaining in the tray itself. She called Tony by intercom and asked him to fetch the tray.
After the tray was fetched, she went to the balcony and fetched the incomplete sketch from the folding. She brought it into the room. She opened the cupboard and fetched the folder from the lower shelf. She closed the cupboard and sat on the floor. She looked at the incomplete sketch. It was like her incomplete life. She looked at the sketch. She hadn't finished the girl alone. What a coincidence!!! Everything is perfect except the girl as if it was meant to be. Bani let out a sad laugh. As Bani looked at the picture, she asked herself whether she had anything to ask the shooting star if it falls. She did not have anything to ask, that was the truth. She spent the next one hour to finish the sketch. But she couldn't. So she stopped and looked at it.
At that time, Tony came and called her for lunch. She thought for a while and declined politely that she was not hungry because of the late breakfast.
After Tony left, Bani lied down on the floor with the sketch beside her and her thoughts reeling back to the past wondering what went wrong and when it went wrong…
