"Di!" Rano ran into the room and hugged Bani. Bani shrank from the hug, "Tum kaun ho?" she asked Rano.
"Di...mei choti...Rano, your sister. Remember Di, our house in Mt Abu. We used to have so much fun. We used to sit on the jula late at night and make plans...you used to sing my favourite song." Rano burst into tears. "Oh Di. Please, try and remember. Why did this have to happen now?" Adi walked in with Jai. Rano ran to JW and hugged him, "Jiju...I want my Banidi back. Bring her back." Adi put his arms around Rano, "Rano, stop crying now. This doesn't help any one. Bani will get better. We just have to help her remember slowly." Rano wiping her eyes away with her hand, gave Adi a tiny smile, "I do hope she gets better papa. I don't want to lose her again."
Adi walked up to Bani and smiled, "How are you Bani beta?" Bani gazed at him blankly, "I don't remember you or her or him." She pointed at Rano and Jai, "How come they know me? Who are they?"
Adi sat down and held her hand and pointing at Rano. "That is Rano, your youngest sister. And he is Jai your husband." Bani became agitated and said tearfully, "No! He is not my husband. I don't remember getting married. If I was married I would have remembered. I don't know who he is."
Adi squeezed her hand, "Bani...shsss...dear. Don't get upset. It's ok. You don't have to worry about anything. Just try and relax dear." Jai and Rano just gazed at Bani, wondering what they should say or do. After a while, Bani's eyes closed and she fell asleep. Adi took Jai outside while Rano sat at the bedside. "Jai, you are going to have to be careful what you say to her. You can't say anything to shock her and upset her. I don't know how long this may last, but you are going to have to be patient. By the way, why did she run in front of the car?"
Jai rubbed the back of his neck and looked upset, "I tried to talk to her about Daksh." Adi glared at Jai, "Why the hell do you not give up on that shit? There is nothing going on between the two...there never was. She only loved you and will always love you." Jai slammed his fist in the wall, "I don't know why I pushed her Adi...I just wanted her to say she never loved Daksh."
"Sometimes Jai, I just want to knock some sense into you. You just get angry and then nothing or nobody can get through, except Jigyasa..." Adi sighed heavily and sat down. "Jai at least do one thing when Bani comes home. Keep Jigyasa away from her...just keep your poisonous sister away from Bani."
Next couple of days the doctors did tests on Bani and made sure she had rest. Ganga stayed with her most of the time. Bani browsed through the photo album and listened to Ganga telling her all about their dhabba in Meerut, the thakur and thakurani and the rest of their friends. In one of the picture, she pointed at Daksh, "Who is he Ganga?"
Ganga beamed a smile at Bani, "Oh that's D...you know Daksh masu. I must call him and tell him about your accident, otherwise he will get mad at me." Ganga rushed out leaving Bani looking at the photos. She stared at the photos, but her mind just remained blank. She pulled out the photo of Daksh. Why couldn't she remember any of these people? Jai walked in with some food, "Hi Bani. Hungry?" he asked. Jai sat the food on the table and picked up the album. Bani held out the photo of Daksh to him. Jai took the photo and slowly looked at her. "Do you remember him?" he asked gently. Bani shook her head and sighed. "No! It's just blank...I am hungry. What did you bring to eat?" Bani asked looking eagerly at the bag. Jai set the album aside and opened the bag and took out the take out container. He put it in front of her, "Your favourite, dal makhani, aloo, rice and raita."
Jai sat and watched her quickly eating the food. She never said anything but concentrated on eating. His mind floated back to the first time he had taken her out for dinner, she had been clueless about the menu and when the waiter had come to take the order, she had asked if she could get something else beside what was on the menu. The waiter had been shocked, people came to the restaurant just to eat the French cuisine and she didn't want anything fromt he menu. Jai had called the manager over and asked if they could have Indian food for his wife. The manager knew JW and quickly organized a set of Indian dishes for Bani. She had eaten most of the dal, rice, aloo and raita served to her...rewarded him with her breathtaking smile and thanked him in her shy way.
Bani finished her food and then sat back and sipped her favourite tea. She gave JW a serious look, "Mr Walia, do you Daksh? How do I know him? Ganga calls him masu. Do I have another sister beside Rano." JW paled...remembering Pia. "Yes, you have another sister, Pia. But she is very sick. She is in a mental asylum." Bani looked at him confused, "Pia, I didn't see any picture of her. Was she married to Daksh?" JW shook his head, "No she wasn't married to Daksh. She married Phuskar and then divorced him." Bani clutched her head, "Oh! Nothing makes much sense. I want to see Daksh and Pushkar."
JW worried she might be in pain, leaned over and removed her hand, "Does your head hurt? Shall I call the doctor?" Bani shook her head, "No! I think I will just try and sleep and not think too much." Just as JW moved away, Bani touched his arm and gave him a smile, "Thank you for the food Mr Walia."
"You are welcome Bani. Take rest now. I will just go and check up on Ganga."
By the time JW came back with Ganga, Bani was fast asleep. Ganga went and smoothed Bani's hair away from her forehead, pressed a kiss, she turned to JW and said softly, "Isn't mama pretty papa. She looks like an angel when she is sleeping.? JW gave Ganga a hug and whispered, "Yes she is an angel."
