Part Five
Uday Walia sat comfortably in his plush leather chair, taking occasional sips from his hot cup of coca. He was a stern man who, now in his late sixties, hated to be defied. Yet despite his apparent hostile features he, for his age, was still an attractive man. People always found it difficult to decipher what he was feeling, his tough demeanour only clattering when alone with his wife.
Krishna Walia.
Krishna Walia had been his life, she was the only one who dared to play tricks on him, the little devil, her emerald eyes always filled with laughter. He had loved that woman more than his own life, and still did.
She wasn't dead.
Not when she stood right in front of him.
She still lived on. He could feel her in the air, taste her sweet smell of nature.
"Krishna…why did you leave me? I always thought that I would be first to go. I remember I even told you, but you kept silent. You didn't have to say much, your eyes did the talking...you agreed with me. My sweet angel couldn't live with the thought of me suffering...and nor could I. Was I too selfish to not want to hurt?" His eyes closed " Why did you leave, you were the only one who could control that boy. I don't know what to do with him…help me angel" he whispered, his voice cracking.
A lone tear spilled from his cheek.
He stared at the portrait in front, wishing it to come to life, to hold her in his arms, to bury his face into her lustrous locks.
"You promised that you wouldn't leave…you."
It had been two years since her demise.
"Jai is up to his games again. I want to see him settled before I can come to you my love. But he is up to his old tricks ….he lied to me. Guide me my angel…like you always have, like you always do."
Sighing he wiped the tear away, knowing that his mental state was a mess. He was talking to a bloody painting, but he refused to believe that she wasn't listening.
She was the wind.
Love had no bounds; if you dared to love you'd never be alone. You just had to believe and the universe would bow down before you, defying the laws of life.
"Help me Krishna…p.p" he stopped mid sentence as the terrace door burst open, a strong gust of wind surging through the room, surrounding him. He felt it move as it were real, caress his cheek….then the papers scattered
He stilled "K…krishna"
A photo lay at his feet.
"Thank you baby…"
Tears.
Bani stared at her reflection in the mirror. She just wanted to get away from it all, to be alone, to chide herself for wasting her words.
Jai would not understand. He was an idiot.
Who was she to tell him of her love, who was he to understand. He liked his gorgeous hot models, not some plain best friend who had no right to "love" him. She shouldn't have said those things.
It was a mistake.
Taking a deep breath she took a hold of herself, fixing her pallu and splashing ice cold water on her face.
"Just one more week and then it's all over…I can leave him and move on." her tone filled with wavering confidence "but perhaps I should tell Papa about the truth now. Then at least I would be free…"
She looked back at her reflection, unsure of her words, and turned the knob.
Papa.
No.
Uncle, would be wondering where she was.
But should she tell?
Nothing but Silence.
God he despised games, well if they wanted to play it that way then fine.
He could too.
"Beta…I was wondering about your shaddi. Have you started the preparations? So much has still to be done beta.." his voice laced with controlled calmness
Just three hours ago he had gone to meet the punditji and it was there that he had found out that no such "marriage arrangement" had been made. Jai had not fixed the date as he had told him. It had all turned out to be a hoax, just as he had expected it to be.
Jai's spoon clattered, his fist clenching and unclenching.
He felt her eyes on him.
"Haan Papa…Bani and I have. We went window shopping, she has chosen a golden red lengha for the shaddi and I a golden brown sherwani. I spoke to the decorators only yesterday, everything will be ready" he spoke, his voice sounding in control but his head pounding.
Uday's eyes narrowed, bemused at how his son made him look like a donkey, a fool.
"Acha really beta? But I thought you hadn't." tone sarcastic.
"No papa I have" his tone curt and irritated. He couldn't sit through this crap. Not when his head was spinning. He was so confused; he hadn't understood what Bani had said. He didn't even understand his own feelings.
What was she really to him. All that he knew was that it hurt when she was away from him… when she had said of leaving him forever.
Sighing he pushed his plate away, refusing to meet Bani's eyes, and got up... but he stilled seconds later.
It was his father's voice that stopped him
"When are you going to stop running away Mr.Walia, when are you going to grow up and stop making an ass of me. I will not be played with. It isn't real is it…"
Jai felt his heart stop. His father never called him Mr.Walia…only once before when he had caught him fooling around with their competitor's secretary, and things hadn't turned out so great.
He could still feel the ghost of his father's vehemence, the strength of his hand against his cheek.
"This shaddi isn't real is it Mr.Walia?" his father thundered, an ominous tone of rage setting within his voice "Answer me Jai."
No, Bani couldn't have… could she?
