Part 13
Finally the big day for the two couples had arrived. The brides were dressed
up in their room. The grooms were banished to the outhouse for one week
until the wedding. They even made a small baraat come to the mansion. The
mansion turned more into the house of the brides were even the mothers of
both the grooms stood in front of the main door to welcome their sons along
with the baraat. It is pointless to say that the three sisters were emotional that
they and the smallest thing would make them laugh, but they were constantly
fighting their tears. They missed their parents so much that day they wanted to
complain to God all the time, but then they would see the amount of love they
got from their new family and could not thank God enough for that.
Two mandaps were constructed in the hall of the mansion. During the
Kanyadaan, Bani stood in between of both the mandaps and saw how
Aditya and Tarun gave away her sisters to their respective husbands. She
could only wish her parents were happy with the weddings. She could only
hope she fulfilled her duty as a parent, a sister, a friend and a guide.
After the wedding there was a grand reception in one off the Walia hotels. A
lavish affair, which had Jigyasa and Karuna Walia's stamp all over the place.
The biggest and the best were there. Throughout the reception Bani would
look at her sisters and their husbands glowing with joy and Aditya and Tarun
pulling their wifes' leg, Anu dancing away with Dadi and Mausi, and Mr
Walia quietly observing everybody with a smile. Bni was truly happy that day.
She could not ask for more. Her family, her life was happy.
There was not a Bidaai like in other weddings. Aditya an Tarun were thankful
for that. They feared a flooding might hit Mumbai as soon as all the Walia
women would start crying. Both the couples stayed back in the hotel to
celebrate their suhaag raat and Bani went to the mansion, one last time.
She was going to move out the next day.
That night Bani went into the garden one last time, and sat on the white swing
she used to share with Ranveer, and looked up to see the stars and the moon.
The rest of the familymembers hardly entered the garden so Bani knew she
was going to be alone. Bani made herself comfortable. She put her feet on the
swing and rested her head on her knees. Suddenly she remembered the song
she used to listen to with her sisters in Mount Abu. It was the song her father
used to sing for them, and learned them.

Jalate hain jis ke liye,The next moring Mr. Walia went to the office the next day. After a lot of time
he slept in the place people called his house. He had to go there last night.
The driver Mausi aksed to give Mr. Walia a ride assumed he wanted to go to
his house. He did not want anyone to find out that he spent the night in his office.
Mr. Walia walked in his to his office, seated himself in his chair and pressed
the intercom button.
'Bani! Bani could you come in for a moment? I need to…..'
Suddenly he remembered she was not coming today. She was going to move
to her new apartment in the afternoon.
Mr. Walia looked at his desk and saw his schedule and all the files
he needed that day. He also found a note on top of the files
Mr. Walia,
These are the files you will need today. If I might have left something out you will find it in the cabinet on the right side of my
desk.
I e-mailed the notes to you, as well as the presentation Mr. Khan is
going to give today. If you want to have a print out, just ask the peon.
You don't have a lunch appointment today, and I know you will
simply forget to have lunch so I took the liberty of placing an order
for you at 'Little China'. They will deliver your lunch. I did not place
an order for your dinner because I want you to go home on time
today!
Have a nice day,
Bani
p.s. feel free to call me in case you need anything. The number is in
your diary next to your computer.
Mr. Walia smiled. He re-read the letter again and took a deep breath, sitting
comfortably in his chair and looking at the ceiling. He closed his eyes. He did
what he did throughout the night. Think about Bani.
For the past two weeks Bani only worked in the morning because of the
wedding preparations and the forthcoming shifting. She would finish her work
around one and go home, or go to her new apartment to supervise the
workers who were painting or putting a new floor and a new kitchen in the
apartment. Mr. Walia could not be more relieved when he granted Bani
permission to work only half a day. He wanted to maintain a distance
between them.
The first time he whispered Bani's name in London, he felt disgusted and
angry at himself. The only thing he kept repeating in his mind was: 'Great
Jai. That girl is taking care of you because she feels obliged to do so and respects you and you are just lusting after her. She is almost half your
age and your uncle's daughter and you are harbouring such low feelings
for her. Just be happy she can't read your mind, otherwise she would
loose all respect for you.'
Sitting behind his desk Mr Walia could still remember what happened
last night. He just went outside to wish his PA a goodnight when he heared
the song. Mr. Walia stood there for a while when he noticed that she did not
sing uncle's favourite part and he could guess why. That couplet was a
remembrance to Nishikant Dixit. If he was still there to sing along, she would
not be sitting on the swing all alone. Bani cried. Her past make her cry. Tears
of sadness but also of joy were trickling down her cheeks.
The uncertainty of her future was scaring her. Mr. Walia hugged her at that
point. He could still feel the light pressure of her frame against his body, her
head resting on his shoulder. Bani did what he did not dare to do all these
years. Cry! On the inside he was crying with her.
In an effort to make her feel that he cared about her, to make her feel
someone would be there for her, he finished the song.
Yesterday Mr. Walia finally admitted that it was not lust that was on his mind.
It was something totally different, something that could not be. He repeated
the words that became a mantra to him in the last two weeks.
Never, Jai! Never!
Mr. Walia again looked at the piece of paper in his hand.
'But I should call her. I just want to make sure she is okay. She wrote I could call her.'
He picked up the phone when he heard the same voice in his head he heard ever since he came back from London.
'Don't be ridiculous Jai! You know why you want to call her. Don't act like a love sick teenager. You are her boss, her guardian, too old for her
and most important of all, you are married!!!!
Mr. Walia put down the phone and tried to concentrate on his work.
