Part1

Everybody was waiting impatiently outside the operation theatre. Jay looked nervous. Nishikant dixit paced the floor. Jagdish walia put a hand on Nishikant's shoulder so that he stops hurting himself by his bewildered act. Jay had a look on Nishikant and Jagdish. He caught the arm of the chair and sat down unable to hold his feet on ground. 15 more minutes passed, Jay felt dizzy when there was a creek sound. He turned his face to see a nurse rushing out of the O.T. He stood up immediately as the nurse passed him. He ran towards the O.T to catch a glimpse of whats happening inside, from the narrow opening. Masi took his hand and drew him towards the chair as he continued to look at that direction. Masi indicated him to sit and then said, "Jay beta dheeraj rakho." Meanwhile the nurse was returning with some more surgical instruments. Nishikant tried to stop her by saying, "woh patient kaisi hai?" the nurse replied, "don't worry. Everything is under control" as she continued to walk and bang! the door was shut once again. Jay's eyes flew open - just a moment ago his eyes got shut. He turned to find masi, she was at the farthest end of the hall talking to a doctor. He became impatient and went straight near the operation theatre door. His father asked, "Jay kya hua?" Jay replied in a feeble voice, "kuch nahi" and went to hold masi's hand, his eyes still on the red lights of the O.T.

20 mins. later the doctor came out with a cheerful face and announced, "ma aur bachhi dono thik hai. Bahut hi pyari bachhi hai. Congrats. Aaplog un dono se thodi der baad unke ward mein mil sakte hai." An excited Jay followed Nishikant, Masi and Jagdish to the ward where the mother and child were kept. After the elders had a look of the baby, it was Jay's turn. He touched the small small fingers of the baby with his small and soft fingers. Jagdish walia said, "mr. dixit aapki beti bahut hi pyari hai. Kitna masoom chehra hai" then looking towards Jay who was busy admiring the baby he said, "kyun Jay maine thik kaha na?" Jay didn't hear anything. Nishikant Dixit said, "thanks Mr. walia, woh to aap log the varna Kiran ki halat dekhkar main apne aap ko hi sambhal nahi sakta." Jay's father replied, "arey please thanks mat kahiye voh to Jay ke tauji ko dekhne hum hospital aaye the ke apko dekha aur hum ruk gaye. Ab hum chalte hai Krishna ghar mein akeli hai. Once again congrats" and he left with masi and Jay who carried on his gaze on the baby. As they stepped out of the hospital, a car stopped in front of them. Jigs was sitting on the back seat and said, "Jay aaj school kyun nahi gaye?" While taking his seat beside jigs, her 10 yr old brother replied, "achcha hua didi ke aaj main school nahi gaya varna kuch miss kar jata."

Part2

After a few days there was a puja for the baby's arrival and also it was the namkaran of the baby. Some close friends and relatives along with the walia family were invited to the dixit house. It seemed as if the puja was the cause of excitement throughout mt.abu. Dressed in a black kurta pajama jay entered the house holding his mother's hand. Jigs followed them. Within no time jigs got involved with her school friends in gossiping (u know how teenager girls do). Jay's mother was busy in organizing things for the puja along with other ladies.

Jay's eyes searched for the baby but of no avail. After sometime panditji came. He began the puja and by this time the baby was brought out of the room. But poor Jay! All those big big people sitting in front of him prevented him from having a look on her. A disappointed Jay could only listen to panditji's words.

As the puja completed, panditji said, "bachhi ka naam 'B' akshar se hona chahiye." Everybody started discussing like "'B' se kya ho sakta hai?" The confusion continued for half an hour when someone shouted 'Bani'. Everybody turned to see a serious Jay standing with his hands in the pocket of his kurta. He said, "kab se keh raha hoon Bani, Bani, Bani." Everybody started laughing. Panditji said, "haan. Bani bahut hi achcha aur pyara naam hai" and with the consent of the dixits the baby was named Bani. Everybody congratulated the dixits as well as Jay. Jay was overwhelmed.

While having lunch Jigs asked her mother, "ma mera naam Jigyasa kyun rakha?" her mother smilingly replied, "kyunki tum hum sabke liye ek jigyasa ho. Kab kya man hota hai samajh mein hi nahi aata." Jigs again asked, "toh bhai ka naam Jay kyun rakha?" once again her mother smilingly replied, "kyunki munna har kisi ka dil jay kar sakta hai." This time turning towards Jay she asked, "tumne Bani naam kyun suggest kiya?" Jay coolly replied, "coz I like the name and it has to be for someone special" and left with Krishna and Jigs laughing their heart out at Jay's innocence. Before leaving the dixit house Jay's mother kissed Bani's forehead. Jay did the same and said "goodbye Bani."

Six years later:

It was lunchtime. A small girl continued to run throughout the house with her favorite doll. Kiran was busy frying papads (I luv them) when the door bell rang. A servant opened the door. Nishikant entered along with some guests. He called, "Kiran kahan ho? Dekho woh log aa gaye hai. Bani." Kiran came out of the kitchen and after seeing the guests her face was filled with happiness. She said, "didi kaisi hai aap?" holding krishna's hand. Then she continued, "namaste bhaisaab. Bachhe kahan hai? Hamari honewali dulhan kahan hai?" jagdish walia replied, "bhabhi woh log ghar mein hai. Thodi hi der mein aa jayenge. Waise humari bani kahan hai?" meanwhile the little girl came panting and hid behind kiran. Kiran said, "bani yeh jagdish uncle hai aur yeh Krishna aunty hai. Namaste karo." Bani kept her doll and very politely said, "namaste uncle. Namaste aunty." Krishna gave her an affectionate hug and then all of them went towards the dining table. While Krishna was serving the food all of them were having a chat except bani who silently listened to the elder's talk.

Jagdish said, "chcheh saal baad mt. abu aakar bahut achcha lag raha hai. Mera mann toh nahi tha jaane ka magar business ke liye jaana hi pada. Aaj jigyasa ki shaadi ke bahane hi aa gaye. Humne toh aaditya ke gharwalon se pehle hi keh diya tha ki shaadi humare pushtaini ghar se hogi. Waise dixit saab aap bhi kyun nahi chale aate Mumbai?" nishikant replied, "are yahan ka business kaise wrap kar doon? Waqt lagega." The chatting continued when Krishna interrupted, "lijiye bachhe bhi aa gaye." Bani lifted her eyes to see a smart girl of the same age as her school teachers and a young boy behind her of the same age as who came to attend the farewell a month ago in the school. Jigyasa said, "namaste uncle mujhe pehchana. Main jigyasa. Namaste aunty. Kaisi hai aap?" kiran replied, "main achchi hoon. Badhai ho. Dulhan jo bannewali ho. Yeh jay hai na?" immediately jay said, "ji haan. Main jay. Namaste. Namaste uncle." They took their seats. Jay was sitting opposite to bani. He said "who's that little girl?" kiran said, "arey woh bani hai. Itni chup chup baithi hai ke pata hi nahi chala ke woh humare saath hi yahaan hai" and laughed. Throughout the lunch, bani continued to look at everyone one by one but whenever it was jay's turn she used to get afraid.

After they finished their lunch, jigyasa sat with bani on her lap and continued to ask her about her school, her friends, etc. by this time jay joined them. He said, "kya baatein ho rahi hai?" jigyasa replied, "kuch nahi bas bani ke school…." When a servant interrupted, "ji aapki ma apko bula rahi hai." Jigyasa left. Bani was a bit scared with jay and was about to leave but something prevented her. Oh! Jay was holding her chhoti and said, "aap kahan ja rahi hain?" bani took back her seat and angrily made her chhoti free from jay. Jay smilingly said, "arey little bani ko itna gussa aata hai?" bani slowly said, "mera naam bani hai." Jay replied, "haan wahi toh kaha little bani" and before bani could protest he said, "mujhse dosti karogi?" bani said, "dosti?? Thik hai lekin aap mujhe bani bulaoge. " jay said, "ok ok main tumhe little bani bulaoonga." Bani said, "I'm not little." Jay said, "you are." Bani replied, "ok I'll call you………jay." Jay said, "but I'm older than you." Bani defended her by saying, "I call all of my friends with their names." Jay said "ok. Chalega."

While the walias were leaving, jay promised bani that he will come next morning for cycling and she must wake up early and before he left once more he pulled her chhoti. By this time Bani was not at all afraid of jay and said, "thik hai. Tata."

Part4

There was a continuous ringing sound. Bani turned to the other side of the bed when suddenly her eyes flew open at a thought of something and she ran towards the balcony. She saw jay sitting on a bicycle and looking towards her! She quickly brushed her teeth and went out with her tricycle. Jay said, "sorry little bani! tumhe shayad jaldi uthne ki aadat nahi. Lekin ye kya? Tum tricycle chalati ho. Oh! I should have thought of that."

Bani interrupted, "I'm sorry for being late aur aap fikar mat kariye main bahut fast cycling karti hoon." Jay said, "lekin itne bhi fast nahi ki tum ek bicycle se compete kar sako. Ek kaam karo apna cycle rakh kar aao. I've a better idea." Bani did as he said. When bani returned, jay lifted her up and made her sit on the small seat on the rod in front of his seat. Jay traveled upon the uneven roads, fields and everywhere he could go. Bani also enjoyed the journey as she always used to travel those places by car. After cycling for two hours jay got a bit tired so he made the cycle stand and moved towards a shop holding bani's hand. He sat on a bench and made bani sit beside him. He then called somebody and asked, "bhaiyya pani hai?" a man came with two glasses of water and handed over to them. Jay asked bani, "tumhe kuch khana hai?" bani hesitantly replied, "jalebi. (wow!)" jay ordered jalebis for bani. Bani took the plate and offered the first jalebi to jay. Jay never liked sweets or anything like jalebis but the innocence with which bani offered it to him, he couldn't refuse. They finished the jalebis in no time and then left for home.

Few days have passed like this with their bond of friendship strengthening day by day. Either jay used to go to bani's place or bani used to go to his house. One fine evening bani was waiting for jay. She wore her favorite sports gear and was standing in the balcony. One hour passed. She then went to jay's house and found that jay was out of the house for the past two hours. She returned home and waited until she fell asleep. Next day morning, at 11 o' clock jay came to the dixit house. He handed some prasad to kiran. He then asked, "aunty bani kahan hai?" kiran replied, "apne kamre mein hai. Pata nahi kal shaam tak bahut khush thi. Fir achanak se udaas ho gayee aur khana khaye bina hi so gayee. Subah bhi chup chup si thi. Abhi uske khelne ka waqt hai magar pata nahi kya kar rahi hai." Jay was surprised to hear all this. While going towards her room he thought, "arey khelne se yaad aaya. Maine usey promise kiya tha ki main kal shaam uske saath playground jaoonga. Oh! How could I forget?" meanwhile he reached her room.

He slowly entered the room and looked around to find bani sitting at a corner drawing a flower. Jay sat on his knees and said, "little bani." Bani lifted her face and saw jay holding his ears. Jay said, "I'm sorry. Punish me as you want." Bani burst out in laughter. All her sorrows were replaced by laughter as she saw jay like the way students are punished in school. Jay felt it and stayed as it is. Bani moved his hands from his ears and said, "your punishment is that you have to promise me that you will never ever break any promises." Jay smiled at her innocence and kissed her forehead and then took her out of the house holding her chhoti to buy her some jalebis……………
