PART 23

They say their goodbyes and promise to meet again soon in Mumbai. Bani is sad to part with her friend that she had met again after such a long time, but she is well aware of how uncomfortable Jai seems here.

They go back to the hotel and up to their suite. Jai goes into the bathroom to change and Bani sits at the dressing table and opens the gift that Jatin had given to her. It was absolutely beautiful and probably ten times more expensive than the chain Jai had given, but to Bani, Jai's gift was priceless and nothing would ever mean as much to her.

She smiles to herself remembering their dance together that night. She had been unable to take her eyes off her handsome husband and knew that every time she heard that song from now on it would always remind her of dancing in his arms.

Jai comes out of the bathroom and stops at the sight of Bani sitting at the dressing table holding the box that Jatin had given her. He sees a faint smile on her lips and she looks lost elsewhere. A pained look crosses his face. He stalks over to the bed and lies down facing away from her. Bani is surprised!

Bani: Jai, aap theek to hai na… itne khamosh kyun hai?

Jai: Kuch nahin Bani, me thak gaya hoon, aur phir kal jaldi uthna hain. Tum bhi so jao, bahut raat ho chuki.

Bani stares at his back in confusion, but then thinks that perhaps he really is just tired – she had made him shop the whole day after all! She walks around to his side of the bed. He hears her coming and closes his eyes. He feels her take a blanket from the foot of the bed and cover him in it. He feels guilty for taking his annoyance out on her and promises to better his mood tomorrow. Soon he hears her come and lie down next to him, and then her rhythmic breathing as she falls asleep. He turns over to look at her in the moonlight and remembers their time together over the last few days, eventually drifting off to sleep himself.

The next morning they both wake early and are soon packed and ready to go. As they are walking out of the suite Bani turns back. Standing in the middle of the room she takes a good look around the room and Jai notices that familiar sparkle in her eye.

Jai: Kya hua Bani? Kuch bhulgayi ho?

Bani: Nahin Jai, mein bas is kamre ke tasveer ko apne dil me bandh karne ki koshish kar rahi hoon. Jo teen din maine yahan aap ke saat guzaare hai unko mein kabhi bhoolna nahin chahati… kaash ke yeh waqt yahi tham jaaye aur-

Jai: Aisa mat kaho Bani! Agar yeh waqt yahi tham jaayega to mein tumhaare saath apna future kaise guzaar paoonga?! Main har pal, har lamhe tumhaare saath jeena chahata hoon. Aur phir bahut waqt hai hamaare paas – agle saath janmo ke liye tumho apne liye reserve kar ke rakha hai!!

Bani giggles at his words, and with a tear in her eye she slowly backs out of the room.

Jai puts his arm around her and kisses her forehead.

Jai: Bani, mein tumhe itna khushi dena chahata hoon ke hamaara har din aisa hi yaadgaar ho.

They check out of the hotel and travel to the airport.

Jai still feels bad about snapping at Bani last night, especially after seeing her upset this morning. He decides he will talk to her on the plane. She must have noticed his discomfort and he wanted to explain himself.

Sometime later they are sat in the boarding lounge, waiting for the announcement allowing them onto the plane when they hear a simpering voice behind them again.

Roshni: Oh my god Jai… Bani… what a coincidence!! Tum bhi issi flight se jaa rahi ho!! Hum bhi isse flight se India wapas jaa rahe hai!!

Jatin: This is great, kal raat bahut chhoti padgayi thi – we'll really be able to catch up on this flight Bani!!

Jai rolls his eyes and excuses himself to go and make a phonecall. The truth is he has no interest in listening to Jatin talk more and more about their college days. Why did they have to be on this flight, for god's sake??!!! Now he wouldn't be able to talk to Bani until they got back home!

The announcement is made for first class passengers to board the plane. Jatin and Jai walk ahead with the tickets and Roshni purposely falls back to talk to Bani.

Roshni: Bani… mein tumse ek baat kahu?

Bani: Er… ji… kahiye Roshniji…

Roshni: Oh Bani, itni formal mat bano na!! Sirf Roshni kaho!

Mujhe… mujhe tumse maafi mangni thi! I know, shaayad tum mujhpe yakeen na karo, but believe me, maine tumse jo kuch bhi kaha, aur jaisa behave kiya, voh bas meri immature jealousy thi. Tum samajh nahin sakti ke mere dil par kya beeti jab me USA se wapas aayi aur mujhe pata chala ke Jai ki shaadi tumse ho chuki hai. I didn't know how to handle the situation and so I reacted badly.

Bani looks at Roshni in surprise. She seems so sincere! Bani feels sorry for her, she understood what it meant to love someone and see them with another person. In that situation, people reacted differently – maybe everything Roshni had done and said had just been her way of dealing with her grief…

Bani: Roshniji… ok, Roshni, please mujhe sharminda mat karo. Mein aapke jazbaat samajh sakti hoon, mujhse maafi maangne ki koi zaroorat nahi hai.

Roshni: Thank you Bani! Ab samajh mein aaya ke Jai tumse itna pyaar kyun karta hain! Kitni achchi ho tum – I hope… I hope hum past bhulaakar, future me dosti kar sake…?

Bani hesitates a little, before smiling brightly. She had always been taught that everyone deserved a second chance. Why should she behave any differently with Roshni?!

Bani: Of course Roshni, mujhe to isme bahut khushi hogi!

They are lead to their seats. Thanking god for small miracles, Jai leads Bani to their seats in the front row and the air hostess escorts Jatin and Roshni to thir seats a few rows back.

Jai: Tum Roshni se kya baat kar rahi thi?!! Kahin usne tumse kuch-

Bani: Nahin Jai, in fact voh to mujhse maafi maang rahi thi!

Jai: WHAT?! You can't be serious?!!

Bani: Believe me Jai, lagta hai ke Roshni ko sach mein inke ghalatiyo ka afsos ho raha hai!

Jai turns to look at Roshni and sees her staring back at him with a smile on her face. "Bani chahe jo bhi kahe," he thinks, "me us Roshni ki rag rag se waqif hoon, zaroor is achchepan ke peeche unka koi na koi maqsad hai…"

After a long flight they finally touch down in Mumbai. Jai had wanted to talk to Bani and apologise for behaving so coldly the night before, but was very conscious of Jatin and Roshni sitting a few seats behind them.

On leaving the airport Jai turned to Jatin and Roshni.

Jai, shaking hands with Jatin: Achcha, to hum ghar chalte hai. Ab to aap Mumbai ke hi rehene waale ho, aap se to mulaqat hoti rahegi!

Roshni hugs Bani, who is surprised at the gesture!

Roshni: Bani, I hope you will think about what I said. Hopefully tumse bahut jaldi mulaaqat hogi!

Jatin hugs her too, much to Jai's discontent!

Jatin: Ok buddy, ab phir se ghayab mat ho jaana!! Maine Juhu mein ek ghar khareed liya hai, bas sab kuch set up ho jaaye, phir mein ek shaandaar house-warming party rakhne waala hoon! I'll let you know, ok!!

They walk away in opposite directions and Jai breathes a sigh of relief! He spots Aditya and waves to him.

Adi: Arre yaar, kahan the tum?!?! Kabse intezaar kar raha tha!! Aur voh Roshni yaha kya kar rahi thi?! Aur uske saath voh…

Jai: Bas, bas Aditya!! Saare sawaal yahi poochonge?!! Ghar nahi jaana?!

Adi: Of course ghar jaana hai – ghar pe tumhaare liye ek surprise hai Bani!!
