Jatin: Great!! So that's a date then – hum aapko saat baje Shamiana restaurant me milenge ok?
They part ways and Bani continues her chattering while Jai resigns himself to a very long night…
The Shamiana is a beautiful Indian restaurant perfectly hidden away from the usual crowd! Soft music plays as Jai and Bani enter the restaurant at 7.10pm. She is dressed in a bright turquoise sari, long hair swept back into a loose bun and escaping strands of hair play at her face in the breeze.
Jai is dressed in his trademark black, looking devastatingly handsome – he seemed to have made an extra special effort today for some reason…
They hear Roshni calling them over to the bar.
Roshni: Hello Mr & Mrs Walia, bahut sahi waqt pe aaye ho!! Jatin mujhe abhi tumhaare baare me hi bataa raha tha Bani.
Bani forces a smile and turns to greet Jatin warmly. He gives her a bear hug and kisses her cheek. Jai clenches his jaw and Roshni watches the scene with an evil smile. Bani is delighted at seeing her friend again, but cannot help being uncomfortable with his affections!
Jatin: Happy belated birthday to my dearest friend!! Ye lo tumhaara tohfa!
Bani: Jatin… iski kya zaroorat thi?! Tumse phir mulaqaat hui hai, yeh tohfa kaafi hua!
Jatin: Nahin nahin, aisa nahin chalega. Tumhe yeh tohfa lena hi hogi Bani!!
He pushes a box into her hand. She opens it and sees a beautiful diamond necklace with a teardrop shaped pendant and earrings.
Bani: Er… wow…! Par Jatin, yeh me nahin le sakti, bahut zyaada hai… please…
Jatin: Kya baat kar rahi ho Bani?! Me bachpan se tumhaara best friend raha hoon! I know I have not been around for a while lekin iska matlab yeh nahin ke mujhse formality ki baatein karke tum paraaya kardo!!
Roshni drawls: Le lo na Bani, itne pyaar se jo diya hai!
Jai glares at her – if looks could kill…!! He knows what she is up to and he won't let her have the satisfaction of succeeding! Bani looks at Jai, trying to read his expression but he is too busy glaring at Roshni! He finally turns to Bani and catches her eye.
Jai, a little too brightly: Le lo Bani, doston ko inkaar nahin kiya karte.
Turning to the barman: One whiskey on the rocks, and one-
Jatin: One orange and passionfruit juice with a dash of lemon and extra ice!
Bani laughs: Jatin, tumhe ab bhi mera favourite drink yaad hai?!!
Jatin: Of course Bani, hazaaron baar tumhe college ke saamne waali juice bar me le jaa chukka hoon, itni asaani se thodi bhoolunga!!
Jai: Of course, aapko to yaad hoga hi!!
The maitre d' leads them towards their table in a softly lit corner of the room, next to the dancefloor.
Jatin pulls Roshni's chair out and sits down next to her. Bani moves to sit opposite him but Jai pulls out the chair opposite Roshni for her.
Jai: Betho Bani!
Jatin notices his tone and smiles to himself. It is slowly becoming clear why Jai seems a little irked!
The evening draws on painfully slowly for Jai. Bani and Jatin have not stopped talking about their college days since their food arrived – he can hardly join in!! He is stuck looking at Roshni's face!! She is staring at him with a smirk, probably enjoying his discomfort. He remembers slapping her and wonders how he had ever wanted to marry someone as insensitive and selfish as her!
The instrumental background music changes into a medley of slow and romantic songs. Jai quickly recognises one of his favourites and is about to ask Bani to dance when-
Jatin: oh… my…god…!!
Bani: Jatin!!!! Yeh gaana yaad hai?!!
Jatin: Final year, summer singing competition!! Wow, this song brings back so many good memories!! Jai, excuse me, lekin me aap ki biwi ko ek minute ke liye chura le jaa raha hoon, I hope you don't mind?!
Jai does not look impressed and Bani blushes.
Bani: Nahin Jatin, mein dance nahin karti!! Pleas… rehene do na!
Jatin: Kisse banaa rahi ho Bani, hamare college ki dance champion keh rahi ke voh dance nahin karti?!!!
Jai looks at Bani in surprise – dancing champion?! He didn't know that about her! Jatin takes Bani's hand before she can protest and pulls her onto the dance floor.
"O saathi re… tere bina bhi kya jeena… tere bina bhi kya jeena…
phoolon me kaliyon me…sapnon ki galiyon me…
tere bina kuch kahi na… tere bina bhi kya jina… o saathi re…tere bina bhi kya jina"
Roshni: Tsk tsk tsk… bechaara Jai Walia!
Jai turns to scowl at Roshni and she looks delighted to see his annoyance.
Roshni: Kitna achcha couple lag raha hai na? Jodi bilkul match hoti hai! Aur kyu na ho?! Dono best friends jo tehere, college ke zamaane ke hum-umra dost!! Lekin yeh kya Jai… tumhara chehra kyun utargaya? Kahin tumhe…
Jai: Just shutup Roshni. Mujhe tumhaari fizul ki bakwaas sunne mein koi interest nahin. Mein yahan sirf Bani ke liya yahan aaya hoon, taake voh apne college ke dost se milsake. Sab tumhaari tarha sirf apne baare main nahin sochte Roshni – behetar yahi hoga ke tum apni kaali zubaan bandh rakho!
Roshni scowls and flicks her fringe as Jai gets up and walks onto the dancefloor.
Jai: May I cut in please?
Jatin: Er… yes… sure…!
Jai takes Bani's hands and holds her close as they glide across the dancefloor. She looks up at him and smiles and everything fades away – all Jai is conscious of is the music and the beautiful woman in his arms…

is dharti se… us ambar tak… meri nazar mein tu hi tu hai…

They are lost in their own world and do not notice Roshni and Jatin in deep conversation, glancing over at them time and time again.
The song ends and they walk back to their table hand in hand. Jai's mood has brightened up for obvious reasons and he cheerily asks for the bill.
Jatin, who had been looking quite troubled, forces a smile and tells Jai that this dinner is his treat.
Jai: Nahin nahin Jatin, yeh dinner meri taraf se – after all ye meri biwi ki janamdin ki khushi me tha na?
Jatin takes the hint and puts his wallet away.
Roshni: Ok then Jai, agar yeh dinner tumhaare taraf se to mein Jatin ki taraf se tumhe Mumbai mein dinner ke liye bulaati hoon. In fact dinner nahin, ek party ke liye bulaati hoon. Jab hum Mumbai pohonch jaayenge toh me ek bahut badi celebration rakhne waali hoon Jatin ke honour me! Aakhir itni kam umar mein unhe itna success mila hai, badhaai dene ke liye I am sure you will come, haina Bani?
She gives Jatin and Bani a sugary sweet smile and annoyingly flicks her fringe again.
Jai: Chalo Bani, chale ab? Bahut raat ho chuki hai aur phir kal savere jaldi nikalna hai.
They say their goodbyes and promise to meet again soon in Mumbai. Bani is sad to part with her friend that she had met again after such a long time, but she is well aware of how uncomfortable Jai seems here.
