PART 21

An hour later they come downstairs together arm in arm. They look a picture of perfect happiness. Everyone who sees them smiles… everyone, that is, except the person in the coffee shop who has been watching… waiting for them to leave the hotel – the look on their face is far from one of happiness……

The driver takes them to the Princes Mall, a large shopping mall in the city centre. It is not long before Jai is bored stiff, following her from shop to shop carrying all the bags. She is babbling away about something, but all he sees is the sparkle in her eyes…

Bani: Jai… JAI!! Kya dekh rahe ho, kuch madat karo na!! Ok. Jigyaasa auntie, Aditya Uncle, Dadi, Ranveer aur Anu-Rohit ke liye hogaya. Ab bas baki hai to Pushkar, Pia, Ra-

She stops her chirping at the thought of her youngest sister. Jai notices the sadness on her face and asks why she stopped…

Bani: Rehene do Jai, is baare mein mujhe koi baat nahin karni.

Jai: Aisa kaise chalega Bani?! Agar tum mujhe nahin kahongi to aur kisse kahongi?

Bani: Please Jai, just forget about it for now.

They hear a sarcasm-drenched voice and turn in shock, recognising the voice of the last person they ever wanted to see!

"Don't worry Bani, Jai ko to bhulne ki aadat hai!!"

Jai: ROSHNI?!!! Tum yaha kya kar rahi ho?!!!! Tumhe kaise pata chala ke hum-

Roshni: Don't flatter yourself! Ye mat sochna ke main yaha tumhaare piche ayi hoon Jai!! Actually mein yahan apne dost ke bete se milne ayi hoon. He's a brilliant business mind who will be helping me run my Mumbai office from next week.

Jai glares at her. He looks at Bani who has turned her face away and is carrying on with her shopping. By the way she is jerking hangers from side to side on the racks, he can tell she wasn't best pleased at Roshni's sudden appearance!!!

Roshni smirks at him and suddenly smiles widely as a good-looking young man walks up behind Jai, waving at her.

Roshni: Jatin!! Shopping ho gayi tumhaari?

Jatin (played by… Iqbal Khan!! ) nods in agreement and walks towards Roshni.

Roshni: Inse milon Jai. Ye hai Jatin Mehra! Woh abhi abhi America se MBA karke wapas laute hai aur agle hafte woh Mumbai aake mera waha ka office sambhaalne wale hai! Abhi hum Scotland mein apni peheli deal final karne ke liye aaye the.

Jai, cordially: Hello Mr Mehra.

Jatin: Please, call me Jatin!

Jai calls Bani over to meet him. She turns around and her eyes fall on Jatin. They widen in shock and she opens her mouth in shock!

Jatin: Bani… Bani Dixit, is that you?!

Bani squeals in delight. Jatin walks up to her and hugs her tightly, lifting her off the floor in a bear hug. Jai looks at them in shock, immediately wary of this over-friendly stranger!

Jatin: I can't believe this yaar!! What a pleasant surprise!! Kaha thi tum itne mahine? Hum last time tab mile the at the…

Bani & Jatin together: College graduation party!!!

They both laugh and Jai notices how Bani's eyes sparkle. Normally he would have smiled but for some reason he was feeling a little…. unsettled…?

Bani: Kitna pee chuke the tum us party mein yaad hai?! Aur phir woh Ruhi Sinha jo tumhaare peeche paagal thi… you were so drunk you couldn't even fight her off!!

Jatin: Oh god Bani! Please yaad mat dilao!! Aur phir tum mujhe bachaane ke liye aagayi thi, mujhe uske changool se baahar nikal liya!!!!

Bani giggles: Well what are best friends for?!!

Jatin smiles and shakes head: So… my god I still can't believe it… itne waqt ke baad…!! What are you doing here?!!!!

Bani: Hum yaha kuch dino ke liye chutiya manaane aaye hai!!

Jatin: Hum…?

Bani smiles shyly at Jai, and opens her mouth to speak but before she can, Jai jumps in…

Jai: Mein hi Bani ka pati hoon… usse apna birthday manaane ke liye yaha laaya hoon.

Jatin's face falls and he looks concerned. He looks at Jai, then at Bani and then back at Jai again. Guessing what is going through Jatin's mind, Jai decides he is beginning to dislike this guy…

Jatin: Aap…? Bani yeh tumhaare… er… wow… tumne shaadi kab karli?! Mujhe bulaaya bhi nahin?!

Roshni chimes in: How sad! Tum apne best friend ki shaadi attend nahin kar sake!! Bani, very bad!! Apne khushi mein shaamil hone ke liye apne doston ko nahin bulaaya?!

Bani looks uncomfortable at the talk of their wedding and Jai glares at Roshni.

Bani: Woh… mein… tumhaare America jaane se kuch mahine baad papa ki death ho gayi, aur phir hum Mumbai chale aaye. Tumhaara contact number bhi mere paas nahin tha na, kaise bataata tumhe?!

Jatin: Uncle ki death…?! Oh my god! I… I feel so guilty, mein tumhaare zaroorat ke waqt me tumhaare saath nahin tha…

Bani smiles faintly and looks away. Jatin decides a change of subject of needed!

Jatin: Aur… woh shaitaan?!! Pia kaisi hai?

Bani smiles: Pia bilkul theek, uski bhi shaadi ho gayi! Tum Mumbai aa rahe ho yeh sunkar bahut khush hogi voh!!

Jatin: Aur Rano?

Bani's face clouds. Jai is annoyed that someone has saddened Bani this way and cuts in sharply.

Jai: Chalo Bani, der ho rahi hai, kal flight hai aur bahut shopping bhi baki hai.

Bani looks at him strangely – they'd almost finished their shopping what was he talking about…?!

Roshni: Itni bhi jaldi kya hai Jai? Flight to kal subah hogi na? Aaj kitne waqt ke baad dost mile hai! I suggest dinner for four this evening?

Jatin: What a great idea Roshniji!! Ab naa mat kahiyega aap dono! Haan hum Mumbai mein zaroor milenge, but that won't be the same! Yeh mausam, yeh jagah, acche saathi!! Yeh mauka gavaana nahin chaahiye!

Jai: Er… I don't think…

He is about to refuse but sees Bani's crestfallen face. Jatin was her friend after all, Jai can put up with him and Roshni for one night if it makes Bani happy!

Jai: … sure… why not?!

Bani looks up at Jai and smiles brightly. Jai thinks to himself – yes, that was definitely worth it!!

Jatin: Great!! So that's a date then – hum aapko saat baje Shamiana restaurant me milenge ok?

They part ways and Bani continues her chattering while Jai resigns himself to a very long night…
