Chapter 28 A
It was late into the evening and now Bani was almost now on pins and needles. Jai hadn't called her or even come to visit her. Normally he always came and spent the evenings with her after her therapy sessions in the afternoon. She was just hopping that he and the kids did not have another show down.
Where as Jai was happy that at least he had taken one positive step after two long weeks of trying to get to know his kids or rather talk to them. He had to thank his friend and Bani for that. In the mean time he gets a call from India and has to settle certain issues. After that he wanted to get Ami a small gift and he just got into the malls thinking what to buy. He was in a fix seeing the things that are available more over he did not know what his daughter even liked.
Mean while Ami had called up Shaun in between her rehearsal to inform him about the dinner plans.
Shaun: Eh when did all this happen?
Ami: When did what happen?
Shaun: Well as far as I remember today morning also it was a total blow out match and the guy was freaked out by the end of it.
Ami: Oh please I don't know if you are on my side or his side at times.
Shaun: Frankly I am on no ones side. Are you sure about this dinner thing?
Ami: I don't get you why have you got to be always so suspicious of everything.
Shaun: Please I am not the one who sneaks up on all the gossip running around the neighborhood.
Ami: I am not sneaky. And let me remind you I was the one who found out about Mr. Walia. The so called brain of the family did not even detect anything amiss.
Shaun: Well I don't raise opinions till I am sure of something. You go about blabbering in and out that people hardly take you seriously.
Ami: I am not here for a verbal duel. Get yourself dressed and come down to the joint.
Shaun he knew when his sister spoke like that it meant business and he was not so keen on going for dinner. Some how his so called father gave him an unsettling attitude. And his sister's eagerness to know about him did not gel well with him. Often his sister's haste ended up in disasters. And then she keeps crying over it. He did not want this to be something like that. What if their father had just come for their mother? Yes, this much he knows he would like to get to know them. But would he be really keen on fatherhood that is a million dollar question. Why was their mother so tight lipped about their father all these years added to his suspicions?
Shaun: Fine I will be there at six. And this get to know process how long is it for.
Ami: Its only dinner who mentioned about getting to know. And it's a thank you dinner for getting lunch for me.
Shaun: Hey you didn't tell me that.
Ami: Have I got to tell you all the things I do. Now bye and keep the phone down this call is costing me a fortune.
Shaun: Oh you have money to spend on dinner but none for a phone call.
Ami: Are we getting jealous here.
Shaun: Jealous who me.
Ami: No wonder I can't get anyone to date, if I have a brother like you.
Shaun: All right we can discuss your non existent S*x life or boy friends at night or you would be eating up my head for the phone call costing a fortune.
Ami:ya ya I know you are not interested to talk now because is Helen with you or something.
Shaun: Who Helen?
Ami: Stop the innocent act and to night I am not going to leave you. So see you at dinner.
Shaun just looks at the phone as Ami had already hung up. And was wondering how she knew about his new study partner, Helen. Knowing Ami it is going to be trouble. Any girl that he interacts with according to her is his girl friend. When will she get out of this romantic fantasy of hers….
The kids and Jai was unaware of the tension Bain was under as none of them bothered to call and tell about the evening plans thinking that the other one would have told her about it.
Where as Bani still thinking about the evening when the kids came to know about Jai gave her jitters and caused an unknown fear to grip her. Bani knew her daughter may seem to be tough but in fact she was a very sensitive person. She couldn't accept the fact that Jai had come back. Shaun too was not pleased but for him it made no difference. He had a don't care attitude but the only thing that bothered him is Jai here to stay or just come to visit. He did not like the disruption Jai's arrival has caused. He was more like his father rarely showed emotions and was cool like a cucumber but if crossed can be a real tough one to deal with.
For Ami it was a total different thing. Ami and her mother had made a world for themselves she found Jai as a threat Shaun who had been living in hostels was now used not to have his mother around. The first evening even after practice she had not turned up home and Shaun was so worried along with their family friend (Tim Burton and his wife – the lawyer). Jai was also frustrated by then he asked Bani to recollect all the places normally they go. But by then she was exhausted and Shaun was looking at Jai with those accusing eyes. Altogether Bani just wanted to run away from everything.
Finally Jai getting fed up and they were planning to report to police Jai came up to Shaun and said to give him the list of places normally they would go out and the places Ami went around with friends. Shaun was not willing to budge. Then Jai just barked lets keep aside the differences and you do want to find your sister before nightfall as it could mean trouble for her. In a search party the more people better. For Shaun it was a no choice situation. Bani knew what he was thinking while handing over the list if it weren't for you all this mess wouldn't be there. She was sure at that very moment the son and father to get along was next to impossible. So Shaun along with Tim went while Jai went on his own to look out for Ami.
Finally it was Jai who found Ami at the fair ground sitting on her favorite ride though it was shut down after night. Bani didn't know how Jai found out. She did not want to ask him also. There was this unknown fear within her or rather guilt was she wrong in running away like that years ago. She should have stood there and fought it out. She was often reminded in the past that running away only complicated things it was never a solution and today she is herself to blame for all the things. But hopefully this time things would go right for them. She cannot stand to loose her kids nor Jai. And with three strong headed people she is going to be constantly on the verge of a nervous break down.
Neither Ami nor Jai spoke anything about that night that is what worried her the most. Ami always confessed everything to her. They were more like friends. With Jai's arrival she noticed that her daughter seemed to be moving away. She did not like the distance and now a days all their talking was revolved around Jai. Even if they talked about her rehearsals it was ended up with Jai coming in between them.
She was sure something transpired between them that night because next day was like any other normal day. Then after few days they were even willing to let Jai stay home as it was tedious for him to drive back and forth from his hotel and more than half the time he spend in the hospital. Also their friends were busy at work so there wouldn't be at home most nights.
While Bani with all her restless thoughts was getting worried in the other side of town, a father with his two kids were enjoying dinner. In fact if some one were to walk upon them would comment what a perfect picture they made.
This time Jai had really scored points with Ami. He got her a collection of music Cd's that he enjoyed to hear. And Ami was surprised that they had similar kind of tastes. He picked up at random all kinds of music. Shaun looking at the CD's felt the guy knows to play it safe he has got a variety of music so that something would click.
Ami: Hey Shaun see what he's got me aren't they great. It has some of my favorites too.
Shaun: Ya he has got all kinds of music so something of your liking has to be there.
Ami was so mesmerized by the gift it was the first time someone other than Bani or their family friend giving her a gift that she didn't pay much attention to Shaun's comment While Jai really knew this much his daughter might accept him slowly but his son was a different ball game. He was so hard to please and always looked with a suspicious angle.
As the dinner progressed they talked about things here and there. The three of them wanted to stick to a safe topic but finally at some point the direction of the conversation turned to Bani. Then Ami was interested to know how he met Bani.
Jai: Your mum was my aunt's ward or you could say care taker. And I used to look after the business for my aunt that's how I got to meet your mum. In fact she stayed with her after 10th grade.
Ami: You knew her as a kid.
Jai: Not as a kid once she started to live with Massi.
Ami: Massi
Jai: My aunt. She was married to Bani's father's brother.
Ami: You mean to say Granny. We know about her mum's told so much about her and Grand dad Nishi. Don't you think so they would have made a lovely pair? If Grandpa Nishi wouldn't have married Grandma Catalina
Jai was surprised that Bani had told them all about that but not anything about him. Did he hurt her so much that he became such a painful memory for her?
Jai: in a surprised tone you know all about that.
Ami: Of course. Mum loved to narrate her childhood days spent in hostel. But we would like to know how you met mum for the first time she never mentioned anything about that
Jai: eh you don't want to know that.
Shaun: Why?
Jai: Well the first meeting was a fiasco you could say.
Ami: Oh so who created the mess...
Jai: No one. The first time I met you mum was on her 16th birthday and she got shouted at by me the first thing in the morning for messing up my clothes and files.
Shaun muttering to himself why am I not surprised.
Ami: Alright you all did not start on the best of terms. So when did you get married.
Jai: You could say the following year.
Ami: What is that legal?
Jai: Our marriage was an arranged one to keep the business within the family.
Ami: Wow it's like one of those historical M&B series.
Jai: M&B what's that?
Shaun knew asking Ami to explain would be another fiasco so he soon interrupted.
Shaun: Well my sister is a die hard fan of romance. And she loves to read all those stupid stories.
Ami: Oh ya anyways they are much more relaxing than those stupid math's equations you sit to solve.
Shaun: At least you are exercising your brain cells.
Ami: Exercising give me a break you wouldn't know what exercise is if mum didn't make you go for those morning swims. And if not by now you would have developed a big fat belly and thick glasses by staying glued to that computer screen.
Shaun: Please who keeps whining day in and out about loosing the extra kilos and work outs.
Jai realizing that others were looking on their table as by now Shaun and Ami had started their sibling rivalry and he was clueless to stop it.
Ami: I do not whine.
Shaun: yes you do
Ami: Have you ever heard me whining Mr. Walia all these days.
Shaun: Why ask the poor guy and put him in a fix he has been the punch bag for you lately.
Jai was shocked with this reply when did his son start to side with him and he knew this was not going to go well if he sided with Shaun or in fact with Ami also
Ami: Is that so Mr.Walia?
Jai: Well let's say I deserved all that as I was the one that blew up the oven, not to mention broke the lawn mover, dismantled the kettle coil I don't know how many glasses and cups broke …
Ami: Oh my goodness. Well don't worry Mr.Walia I would be giving you a bill by the end of the month so you can pay up for all the loss.
Shaun: Don't let mum hear that.
Ami: Please stop being mama's boy and grow up.
Jai: Come on now the dinner is getting cold so may be you would like to finish it and I will tell you about your mum and me. That got their attention.
Jai was happy at least he could stop their verbal fight. But little did he know talking to his teenage kids was like walking on egg shells for everything they wanted him to take sides. By the end of the dinner he was exhausted but happy to note that he was developing some kind of relationship with his kids. But he was not prepared for Bani's mood as the three of them walked into the hospital.
The three of them walked in with a big smile. Jai had got flowers and was bout to give her a hug. While Shaun and Ami wished her good evening mum. They saw a big frown on her face. And Ami quietly went and placed the take away next to the bed side table.
Bani: Looks like everyone had a pleasant evening.
Shaun: Ami had treated us for dinner. After two weeks…
Bani: A treat so when did you all become such good pals. Till today morning you required me to be the buffer.
Jai: He was so perplexed. What happened Bani?
Bani: Well for starters no one cared to inform me about how the lunch went. (Jai feels guilty on that account how it just slipped out of his mind) then no one turns up in the evening after the therapy no phone calls and I frantically try to reach you all and no one picks up the calls what am I supposed to think. All in one blow she had said that the three of them were looking at her with guilt.
.

Chapter 28B
Tough Bani was initially very upset with Jai and kids she was happy to note that for the first time she found a positive approach from her kids and hoped that they would also try to make Jai part of their life. Ami was more respectable to that idea. She did not mind when once in a while Jai dropped her or picked her up for her rehearsals They did grocery shopping together which was quite new to Jai and they did learn to do things together. For the first time Jai started to ask question on how to go about doing things.
As one evening Bani was sitting there and having food while Jai was over the phone and talking to the office in India. Just then Ami walks in wishing both of them good evening. But as she sees Jai is busy she goes to arrange the flower and get some water to drink for herself.
All of a sudden out of the blue Jai just questioned Ami.
Jai: Ami Do you think so it's fine if I did some work in the morning and then later come down in the evening to get the stuffs for home.
Ami: Fine by me. Don't forget to pick up the mail before you leave for work as Shaun isn't there.
When Bani just heard her daughter and Jai conversing she was shocked and the soup went the wrong way and she started coughing.
Ami: Watch it mum.
Jai just disconnects the call telling that he will call back.
Jai: That's why I told you I will feed you.
Bani: I am not in valid only I just cannot walk and that too is temporary.
Ami: Alright now did you both have words.
Jai just looked at his daughter and said what
Ami: No mum is bit hyper.
Bani: I am not hyper it's just that if I had known having kids would bring about a new side in him I would have had those ages ago.
Ami: Oh please mum you had us ages ago incase you didn't notice we will turn thirteen shortly and as for Mr. Walia he is trying to get a hold on domesticity so he is sure to have teething problems.
Jai: Not fair now days I do not make a mess.
Ami: Ya that's because we watch you like hawks. I'm telling you mum it's a real strain on to your nerve cells.
Bani: Ami in a strong tone
Ami: I get it you don't have to say. Anyways I am leaving now Mr. Walia I guess your appointment is still there so I better make a move and do not worry I will close all the doors and windows call up aunt Ellie and you to let you both know that I have reached.
Bani just was wondering how come with a few days things changed so much that now she never came to know half the things that happened around. For the first few days it was like a merry go round now she knew nothing at all.
Bani was still having a shocked look
Jai: Now what Bani.
Bani: Jeet tell me when did you and she get to be so cozy.
Jai: Cozy. Please if I do not turn up at the right time for dinner she will make a toast out of me.
Bani: And when did Jai Walia stat to keep informing about his where about to people at home.
Jai: Oh tease all you want Bani you don't know what a tough job it is to handle those two.
Bani: excuse me I have been handling them all these years and I can vouch they are very good kids.
Jai: Good yes but tough nuts to crack.
Bani: Blame it onto the genes.
Jai: What no way.
Bani: Smilingly oh yes.
But like everything it cannot be all rosy and good. There are bound to be hiccups. Bani was back home now and she was happy to note the house was intact. And she was surprised by the welcome party she got at home. Jai had baked cookies oh yes he did burn them a little but still it was edible. And Ami said he has been trying it for ages but still couldn't get it right. So its better he stayed with this balance sheet. Bani was happy though Shaun was still a bit aloof he did join in and comment He is good with numbers no denial but makes a mess of the study by the time he is done. Ami: Quit complaining the guy does clean up after all you give him those ugly looks every now and then.
Bani and Jai was laughing. As Shaun did not like the way Ami tired to support Jai.
Shaun: Remember sis I will only be there for you in times of trouble. Do not come whining for help to me.
Ami: Oh please
Bani was in high spirits as her cast was gone and the Shaun's school would be starting next day and he is going to be away for the term and Ami too her shows have been scheduled she and Jai would get time to spend together like before she was looking forward to it as she had a lot to tell him with kids it was kind of impossible. Today a grant dinner was prepared. The kitchen was a mess but it was fun. The kids and Jai had a good time and they hardly allowed Bani to do a thing.
Little did Bani think that the fun and good time was short lived.
Over the dinner table they were discussing on about what time Shaun would be leaving tomorrow when Jai realized that nothing was mentioned about Ami's school going.
Jai: So your bother's term has begun what about yours.
Ami: Me may be after the show I will start off on it.
Jai: What do you mean by may be?
Ami: Shrugging her shoulders. I will have to check the schedule and things like that when I can squeeze in other wise I normally do studies in the summer as that's the time I'm not busy.
Jai: not getting a cream of what she was saying. Busy doing what?
Ami: Mr. Walia Dancing what else.
Jai: Dancing then what about school.
Ami: Am I talking in Greek over here Mr. Walia I don't go to a formal school I do a home schooling that's it.
That's when Bani realized that Jai was not aware of all this and she knew Jai would be shocked.
Jai: What? You are telling me you dropped out of school to do dancing. And turning towards Bani accusingly you agreed to something like this.
Ami: Mr. Walia stop getting hyper you are scaring mum and what's wrong with dancing it pays well and I plan to make a career out of it.
Jai: My daughter and dancing career oh no you should be joking Ami.
That's when Ami looked up to see both her parents face and realized that Jai was serious about what he was saying.
Ami: Sorry to disappoint you Mr. Walia if I do not measure up to your standards but I have never stepped into a school ever in my life and the only place I have been if you could call it in terms of schooling would be a dance school. And if you looking for some perfect child you can find it in my brother Shaun. He is an A+ student and I guess you could say I am the black sheep of the family. Now if you will excuse me and she walks off. It was Bani and Shaun who saw that unshed tears.
Bani just gave a sigh and said: Jeet I know you don't enjoy dancing much but she is good at it and she is also a good student.
Jai: Bani you know the way I feel about dancing what's the need for it.
Bani: There's a lot you don't know about us.
Jai: Well I'm all ears.
Just then Ami walks in to get a glass of juice. And notices that her mother is upset and Shaun any time now would blow his top off. It would not be a pleasant situation. She did not want to be a reason for bringing unhappiness into the family. After a long time she has seen her mother being so enthusiastic and smiling.
Ami: Please Mr. Walia can't you just give it a rest. I am a dancer and I have no shame in admitting that. But its your choice if you would like to consider someone like me as your daughter no one is forcing you too. And walks off to her room.
Bani had tears in her eyes and she walks slowly behind Ami to see as she knew her daughter was hurt beyond anything.
That shocked Jai to the core. What did his daughter just say.
Shaun: I hope you are happy now. I knew something like this was bound to happen.
Jai: What do you mean?
Shaun: Just tell us why you have come now we were quite happy with the way things going yes mum did miss you. But at least we were not looked down upon.
Jai: Is it wrong to feel responsible for your kids and to suggest a good schooling and future.
Shaun: Responsible I don't think Mr. Walia what you said over the table was a from a responsible father at least I thought you were a gentleman. But you are a true aristocrat. No wonder mum didn't live up to your standards.
Jai: You are getting me wrong son and you do not know what you are saying.
Shaun: I am no more a son to you than Ami is and there are some things I do know and let me make it clear to you. You find it easy to accept your son because he is considered to be one of the best students and goes to an elite school. For your knowledge Mr. Walia I'm what because my sister choose to put those dancing shoes at a time when she was supposed to be playing. I can never pay her back for the things she has given up in life for me.
Jai: I know the relationship you share with her. But it was just a shock...
Shaun: What shock that she attends a full time dancing school and she is an artist. Let me tell you something every morsel of food on that dining table we had for dinner is because my sister choose to dance rather than go to a formal school. And do you know what it feels like to know that your little sister works fourteen grueling hours on her feet so that I get to go to the best boarding school, clothes, clubs you name it. She didn't do that for herself. She did for me. Can you suggest something that I can do to repay all that? No you wouldn't be able to do it Mr. Walia. For that you have to come down from that high horse and so called rich society to a common mans world to understand.....
Bani: Shaun I think you have said enough.
Shaun: Why mum you can never face the facts up front. He has come back but he can never become a part of our life. He is too different.
Bani: He is your father and I believe that is a reason enough.
Shaun: Then tell him to act like one. And he runs off to his room banging the door.
Bani just closes her eyes knowing that Jai would have loads of questions for her and her kids would never like to be looked down upon the were very proud and strong willed like their father. They never compromised on things and never left things half way.
Jai on seeing Bani standing at the steps with closed eyes and tears falling he felt as though it was in a different life time he had married Bani. Things have changed so much. Where was the girl that he married who would come up to him for every other thing. She was lost somewhere she grew up and he was to blame or rather it was him who changed her. Yes he wanted to see an independent Bani it was his wish to see her mature and handling things but then things went the wrong way. And now his children too hated him for that. When Shaun said those words he knew it was for him. He was never there as a father to take care of them. They have been taking care of themselves al these years so he could never judge them or even pass a remark. He had to come down to their level and think before.
Slowly Jai climbed up the stairs where Bani was sitting. By now she was tired and drained of every ounce of energy.
Jai: I know Bani I have made lot of mistakes in life. But now I want to make things right and I mean it. Also I swear Bani I never knew Ami was home schooled. I though dancing was just a hobby of hers.
Bani: I am sorry Jeet I should have told you before. There are lot of thing's you have to know about us and I guess its time you know it. Bani knew Jai would not like to hear the things that she was going to say.
I was with the sisters at the convent and out of the blue I receive a letter from uncle George my mum's brother. He had given up his job in the navy. He was coming down to visit me and you. But I just cried down in front of him and I really do not remember. Around that same time I came to know that I was pregnant. I waited for you to come back. But than uncle insisted to come to Canada as he felt if you were not going to come for me. He wanted to save me form another heart break you could say. But I was always hopeful. That really brought tears in his eyes.
So I was back to the country that I was born. Tim's family also was helpful. After few days as per the doctors suggestion I started to work too as it would make me come out of my gloomy self.
After the kids were born it was difficult to work. Then I did some odd jobs finally I started to teach at a dance school. From there I came to know of a partner ship deal with a dancing school Financially it was not viable Also times were bad as uncle George was sick he had developed cancer and he died shortly after it was diagnosed. Once again ?I became alone with the kids. But the insurance money helped me to get a partnership in the dance school so now I could work flexile hours. The kids came along with me. Ami from a very early age seemed to have a taste for music and dance. It just happened that one of the troupes saw her dancing and they wanted child artist when she was four. Ami fit the bill perfectly. From then on offers started to come in. The money was good she enjoyed it and things started to fall in place I got a better house, good education for Shaun and it helped me to develop the dance school better and get established also Initially I had never planned on her giving up formal schooling but then she was really good and she enjoyed doing it. It was like a passion for her. I know she has lost lot of things normally a child would get to do. She grew up too fast. Do you blame me Jeet for that. Do you think so you can forgive me for that. If once she shown that she was not interested to do it. I would have stopped it then and there. But she always looked forward to her performances. And I loved to see her perform and it gave me great pride too. Can you understand that Jeet. Please say that you too will try to Its important Jeet Dancing is important to her. It's her life. That's what she only wanted to do from the time she began to walk. I know you don't see that in high regard.
Jai: No Bani I love to see her dancing its just that its hard to believe that my daughter has grown up so much how do I make up for all that time I have lost. How do I take back those words though unintentionally I said over the dinner table.
Bani: She will come round I know that. She loves you I have seen that in her eyes.
