Nice take.. Thursday episode was indeed about respect aa karn pointed out quite effectively and made sure that dury respects his relationship with his wife in true sense...giving uruvi one more facet to karn personality.

I've read it in the book. The king's had their weapons out there too. It is Krishna who handles them in the book but given the charecterisation of Uruvi in the show, I wouldn't be surprised if she's the one who shuts them up in this.

I loved Thursday's episode.

The underlying theme of the episode I thought was RESPECT.
I wouldn't call it the theme, I'd say it was one of the reference points.
Shakuni teaching his nephew how to be disrespectful towards his wife and maybe woman in general.

This Shakuni seems to have no brains. Like mentioned earlier in the Forum, he's crass and has no behaviour befitting a conniving king and uncle. Karn seems to have one up over him. Shakuni is supposed to be smart. Not a roadside henchman.

Duryodhan who is influenced by his mama goes to Bhanumathi's room trying to force her. Enters Karna loved the scene and the dialogues.

One which, resonated with me is No means "NO such a powerful message seems valid for the current times where people all around the world need to understand that this word has no ifs or buts, no ambiguity but just means NO.

I mentioned this somewhere, that I think, even mythologies and period dramas are highly influenced by the times we live in. In 2018, No means No is a powerful message and this is reflected in the Dwapara Yuga portrayal of Mahabharat too.
However, despite a Contemporary tone to his lecture, I loved it. I absolutely loved it. My earlier inhibitions of Karn being helpless and indebted to Duryodhan are thankfully being butchered by the new found confidence that Karn has instilled in me. This scene probably whitewashed Karn, but I give two hoots about it, coz I love the Karn in the story, and what won me over was how he stood his ground. He literally walked into a queen's bedroom at night, when she's with her husband, and dare I say, had the audacity to stop Duryodhan from sleeping with his own wife. 😆 Great progress. 👏
What I loved even more was how Duryodhan appreciated his point of view and decided not to reject his advice. He still doesn't believe in the Prem crap, which still makes him grey. But he's astounded that his supposed celibate friend knew more about love than he did. And THAT impressed him, and finally Karn said what was in Duruodhan's favour. I am so glad he acknowledged that and said I don't disagree with him coz he's my conscience keeper. Contrary to what we had discussed about Urvi being Karn's conscience keeper. I think it's Karn who's Duruodhan's conscience keeper. Whatever Karn does, it's not gonna be against his conscience. He's very well able to justify his actions to himself even if they are wrong. As of now this is the case. So I hope we are spared long Urvi bhaashans, I'd rather have Karn bhaashans. This Karn-Duryodhan bromance is the next best thing after Karn-Urvi chemistry. 😆

rna'stalk to Duryodhana about winning with Love and took that same message to Shakuni when he says Might does not characterize force.

This was another amazing scene. Idk if you noticed but I did.
Karn was so firm and resolute with Shakuni! It's almost as if he disregards the crass Shakuni who's lowly and cheap. 😆 But respects him for his best friend's sake. Like tolerate I suppose. Now, Shakuni was funny. The dhol and Pushp and all. But no way how Shakuni is supposed to be. I am disappointed. 😆
Karn is truth plus diplomacy. His explanatory powers are awesome. He reasons out with Duryodhan in a manner that incites the man in him to exhibit greater mascunility by being a good man rather than resorting to cheap and brutal force to prove he's manly enough. In both ways, Duryodhan's ego gets satisfied. So at the end, it's all about Drishtikon and Nazariya.
Even Shakuni suggests ways for Duryodhan to satisfy his male ego which are downright wrong and unacceptable. Karn packages it differently and satisfies Duryodhan and his ego anyway. He says respecting women's sentiments is what a true man does. Idk if this is how Karn was, but who cares. This is how our Karn is and he's awesome .👏

I may have missed some of the nuances but I think this was the essence.

Duryodhana Respects his friend as he tells Bhanumathi, Karna is his conscience, as he guides him and stops him from making mistakes. This Respect for the words of friend makes him leave Bhanumathi and does not listen to shakuni's machinations.

Uruvi is seeing another facet of Karna and her Respect for this man grows, she wonders was I wrong in judging him and so when she slashes him and he falls down she feels she has wronged him in some way and apologizes.

Bhanumathi did I see a tinge of Respect in her eyes for Karna ..maybe this is a beginning of a beautiful friendship too.

Closing with a quote by Dalai Lama, which I thought, was apt for the relationship between Karna and Duryodhana

"When you practice gratefulness, there is a sense of respect towards others."

One practices Gratefulness and another in turn respects.

I am going to let the prolific writers of this forum to expand upon all the nuances that I may have missed.
I love reading all the varied thoughts in this forum to the funny take of Jamy, to the deep thinking of Shyamala Aunty, Najma, Ritu, Gargi, Fairy and the rest in this forum.

Overwhelmed. 😆😳

Thoughts welcome

Even I loved Thursday's episode. In fact, I have loved all the episodes till date. 😆 Also, thanks for your appreciation of my analysis. Means a lot. In fact, I got some new insights from this post of yours. Sorry for the delay in replying..;))
So I replied to some parts in Bold. I know this is dragging, but I didn't comment on yesterday's episode fully so doing it here directly.
So the first half was superb and Karn stood out throughout the episode. The earlier half of the week was Urvi's Point of View of Karn and now it's Karn himself as he is that Urvi and the audience are able to witness. Idk if I read it somewhere, but there was this mention that in the end, Urvi remains as KarnSangini with less independent identity. But that's the show about right. Urvi's love for Karn, so it's gonna be Karn from start to end for and from Urvi. XD
And even I think I saw a tinge of respect and relief in Bhanumati's expressions. Also, I am glad Urvi overheard all that coz her earlier misconceptions about Karn are giving way to a more tangible and basic truthful impression of Karn. Now, we get to see a certain depth in her attraction/Moh for Karn. Until the Swayamwar, it was unreal and fairy tale like. Now, after that image came crashing down, she's slowly witnessing the real picture of Karn which is far better than her self-created image. So, she was wrong when she told him, you can't do this. I know you. Now she begins to know the real him. Also, when Duryodhan said his wife is gonna be really fortunate. 👏 Kudos to Duryodhan. This got imprinted in Urvi's head..😆

I somehow didn't like the running away thing, I think it just invited more problems. Urvi can mend her ways slightly. I know what happened was wrong etc. But when against a powerful man like Duryodhan, for Bhanumati's benefit she could have adopted a middle path instead of acting stupidly courageous.
What Karn did was buy time for her in a way that suited Duryodhan too. Urvi doesn't know diplomacy and is too absorbed in her definitions of absolute wrong and right. I agree she's right, however, her quest for justice is gonna bring more injustice for her friend and not better it in anyway.
Anyway I am glad it happeneed coz it gave us a very beautiful Karn-Urvi scene. I know it was unnecessary. He could have easily summoned the guards instead of holding her pallu and her hand but it was so beautiful I am willing to ignore the bloopers. 😆 And the background music, the instrumental theme was superb. I am such a shipper of our One True Pair.

And if you notice, both Urvi and Bhanumati are gentle in their reproach towards Karn coz both were witness to his fairness few moments ago.
Something that was wrong - they didn't use hour system of time then, they had Peher. Where 8 Pehers make one day. So that was wrong but alright 😆
Also, it was symbolic in its own way that Karn isn't willing to let her go, now I really can't explain the symbolism coz his expressions weren't decipherable. Which intensified the scene further. I know many would attribute it to poor acting but I'd attribute it to excellent acting. His eyes were bloodshot and pained because of the poison for sure, but it could also signify future pain when Urvi moves away from him and he's desperate to hold her back but doesn't speak up at all. Kudos to this scene. We wouldn't know it's significance until later so I can't comment much on it .👏

Overall, an awesome episode it was. This show deserves better TRPs and a better Timeslot. 😡

Now I'll comment on today's episode. This was with reference to yesterday's alone.

The only thing I didnt get / like was the transition from the conversation to Urvi & Bhanu escaping ! Urvi seemed so in awe of Karn and i felt Bhanu was relieved Duryodhan changed his mind , was kind of surprised after such a solid convo they just jumped into trying to escape - looking at the precap I thought Karn would convice Duryodhan about staying away from Bhanu all the while when Bhanu & Urvi oblivious to this convo would be plotting to escape ! Maybe I was so convinced this is how it ll play out I was a tad dissappointed
Am I the only one pained that Urvi didnt lose it when Karn was losing consciousness ! Yea she said it lasts for a few and he ll be ok but common its Karn and what was Karn really trying to acheive there holding on to the saree pallu
Excited for tomorrow , he looked so serious walking away from the dungeon , poor Urvi

I agree, I mentioned this in my comment but didn't refer to this point per say that the transition was too abrupt. The scene could have been better off had Bhanumati understood the implications of Karn's interference and Duryodhan's vachan and Urvi backing off. But then we wouldn't have got a beautiful scene after that so logic shut off for now 😆
So, I wasn't pained as such coz right now, Urvi isn't in Love with him. She's awed by him. She's way too absorbed into herself, her life, her friends, her definitions of right and wrong and justice, that she hasn't yet begun the selfless journey of love to feel pained. XD
By holding the Saree, he didn't achieve anything but we audience were witness to something poignant and beautiful .So accepted. 😆

I wonder what they will show this trio doing during the Lakshagrih plot. I have never seen Karna try to stop that, but this one may, and fail.

As for Karna's pravachan, the one slated for last night - they seem to have a quota of one pravachan per episode😉 - it was impeccable in its logic and eloquence. So the thali ka baingan rolled to his side.

However, I found the na ka matlab na rather too contemporary - it was a blatant attempt by the CVs to show how with it and hep they are, they have even seen Pink!😉

I noted that even after Duryodhana had given Bhanumati that vachan, Karna did not move from there. Maybe he was ensuring that there was no moral slippage on the part of his shishya.😉

Apni Uruvi is of course more and more lattoo with her boy wonder.

Hi Aunty! I am sorry if I intrude upon your replies each time, but they offer a perspective I wish to comment on.😛
Regarding the first part of baingan and rolling to one side, I commented something on this same behaviour but differently in my post, above. If you have time to go through it as to how Shakuni and now even Karn offer radical ways to satisfy Duryodhan's ego. And whichever suits him better he goes by that. Coz I love Duryodhan in this show as of now, I can't offer h him a passive role, but I'd say he's that baingan that rolls to the better side based on his own convenience and likeness for the argument presented. So his decision is his own. 😆😉
And I also mentioned the need for a contemporary touch with a no means no. I think shows have that sense of duty towards the society, idk what difference it would make but who knows it's their way of promoting women safety I guess. 😆
And I agree with the bhashan. Who the hell thought Karn is gonna be grey and accepting of Duryodhan's actions, this guy is all out making Duryodhan retrace his steps. 😆 But I love it nevertheless.
Urvi was good when she was impressed with Karn and the final scene but I found her part in the escape stupid. In fact the escape idea itself was stupid.
Anyway, I am eager to hear all your thoughts. XD

I also agree with Hevati that the escape plan didn't fit in after Karn's lesson on consent. Also with the veil on Uruvi, we don't really get to see the impact of his words on her. That was a little bit where I felt a bit disoriented.

S Aunty again pointed out an important thing which I felt but didn't know how to word ki Karn's speech was too contemporary. Until he was talking of dharma and a woman's wifely duties it seemed okay but the no means no was thrown more at Uruvi's crush to materialize than at Duryodhan who clearly has no understanding of the concept 😆 it's a shame that Karn and Uruvi cannot be at all times in their bedroom to check up on Bhanu 😆

- Aileen😳

Was it just me that I found Duryodhan's lack of understanding of women's comforts and rights adorable? 😆
He seemed so impressed with Karn's profound words that I was impressed with him instead. And how profound they were. Pushp and Angaarey and all. 😆 And Shakuni's Prem Yudh scene with Pushp and Dhol was hilarious. 😆 Shakuni is shown dumb here but it is funny.
Also is it also me who feels Shakuni might drive a wedge between Duryodhan and Karn? I know no earlier adaptation showed it before and I hope they don't show it here. 🥱

Thanks for replying. I went and rematches again and what you said makes sense there was an abruptness from one scene to another.
I haven't watched today's episode yet as it has not yet aired here.

Dear aunty
Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay chalk it to time difference
I have not heard about thali ka baingan it is funny 😆
I do understand the No may have been influenced by Pink but given the current situation of Me too Movement I thought it was good if this issue was brought forth even if was not apt for the times this story is set on and looks like from Jamys post that this was addressed in tha sastra too.

Last but certainly not the least it was amazing to read about your interaction with HHDL would love to read and know more about your foreign service experience if you have blog I would love to read it.👏
Thanks again

My dear Sabita,

What I liked the most about this post is not what the characters did or did not do, but the clever way in which you have brought every action of theirs round to your leit motif, Respect. It works very well. 👏

Duryodhana reminds me of a thali ka baingan. You know what that is, right? It rolls from one side to another depending on the tilt.

Loved the quote from HHDL. I had the privilege of looking after him for four years - 1988-1992 - when I was the head of a Division in the Ministry of External Affairs that dealt with, inter alia, Tibetan Affairs. I used to see him off at the airport whenever he went abroad, and receive him when he returned. I remember that December 1989 night when he returned after getting the Nobel Peace Prize, and the Tibetans lined the route out of the airport for 4 kms. with their kids to receive his blessings. It was utterly heartwarming.

Thanks did not know this good to know

QUOTE=Brahmaputra]Karna's take on marital relation didn't appear contemporary to me. Arthashastra repeatedly mentions that a man must not have s*x with a woman without her consent. Whether every man practised it or not is a different thing. But the idea is not contemporary. Na ka matlab was na!
