Chapter 6
"You know what boudi…!!!" Vivan asked Gauri while she was busy oiling his hair.
"Hmmm…what?" Gauri replied distractedly.
Vivan suddenly jumped around to face her and as he took her hands in his, he said enthusiastically, "I have a complete foolproof plan of getting Bhai to notice you."
"Really," replied Gauri bestowing Vivan a benevolent smile, "and what exactly is this foolproof plan of yours?"
Vivan turned back around giving Gauri access to his hair as she continued oiling it, "Palak and I will give you a make over. We will give you such a mind blowing make over that Bhai will have no choice but to fall madly and completely in love with you."
Gauri smiled at her brother-in-laws childish enthusiasm and said, "I didn't know you were such a romantic Vivan. So who's the lucky girl that has so wonderfully transformed my devarji?"
Vivan blushed and dodging the question, replied, "Oh come on boudi we are not talking about me, we are talking about you and Bhai. It's obvious that you both are madly in love with each other, it's just a question of bringing your deeply hidden feelings to the surface and trust me, my plan will work." Gauri smiled wistfully at her brother-in-law's words and thought if only that was true. Vivan jumped up and pulled Gauri to her feet along with him. He held out his hand and asked, "Come on Boudi, this is the perfect opportunity since Bhai is out of town. When he comes back we'll give him the shock of his life. So are you with me?"
Gauri looked at Vivan's excited face and outstretched hand and thought, "why not, its not like I have anything to lose," out loud she said, "Sure…as long as I don't have to do anything drastic like wear short skirts or something."
Vivan shook her hand and giving her a mischievous smile he said, "Oh don't worry boudi, I promise nothing drastic."
Shiv hurried out as soon as the plane landed. He was so excited; it was the first time in a long time that he had felt such enthusiasm about anything. When he had realized that he could wrap up things in London, a few days early, he figured it would be the perfect opportunity to do something spontaneous. He decided to surprise the family as they were not expecting him until the day after tomorrow. He could not wait to see the expression on their faces, especially the children. He knew that Viraag was disappointed that he wasn't going to make it for his birthday tomorrow. And now he couldn't wait to see the smile on his son's face when he surprised him for his birthday.
Shiv waited impatiently by the curb, "where the hell is that Manchan, he should have been here by now." Shiv silently berated his friend, who should have already been here to pick him up from the airport. Shiv looked impatiently at his watch, it was getting late, if he didn't get home soon, the kids would already be in bed and he would miss surprising them. Just as Shiv was pulling out his cell phone to give his late friend a piece of his mind, a car pulled up in front of him. Shiv let out an angry sigh as he saw his friend step out and come over to help with his bags, "What the hell Manchan, I told you not to be late. Look at the time man!!! I swear if the kids are asleep by the time I get there, you are not going to hear the end of this."
Manchan looked at Shiv sheepishly and with a little smile he said, "Sorry man I got stuck in traffic, you know how it is? But if we are going to be late now, it's going to be your fault for wasting time shouting at me." Shiv gave him an exasperated look and said, "Just drive, smartass." A grinning Manchan sped off in the direction of the Kapoor mansion.
Shiv stepped into the house with a big grin, screaming, "SURPRISE!!!" but his usually loud and boisterous living room was eerily silent, not a soul to be seen anywhere nearby. A frowning Shiv called out for the housekeeper, "Raghu Kaka, where is everyone?"
Raghu Kaka replied with a smile, "Oh Shiv beta you are home already. But beta everyone has gone to Prachi bitiya and Neev beta's wedding."
"Everyone?" asked a disappointed Shiv.
"Well Bahu rani is still home. She waited till the kids were in bed. I think she is getting ready to leave now too." Shiv smiled at least he'll get a chance to surprise his wife.
"Shiv beta do you want me to go tell her that you are home?"
"No kaka I'll go surprise her." Shiv yelled out as he sprinted up the stairs towards their room.
The door to his room was wide open and Shiv smiled excitedly and burst through but whatever he was going to say died an instant death on his lips. The sight that greeted him in the room knocked the wind out of him.
She was wearing a curve hugging white churidaar kameez. It had a deep cut in the back revealing, her gorgeous naked back to him. She was struggling to tie the dori of her kameez and her shiny, long tresses kept getting in the way. Shiv stepped in further to see her lovely reflection in the mirror. She was too busy with her struggle to notice him. He had never seen a more beautiful sight before. Her already beautiful eyes were darkly lined with kohl. She was biting her luscious lips in concentration. Simple silver jhumkas adorned her ears and her silver maang tika shone brightly against her dark, black hair. Shiv could almost feel his fingers itch with a burning desire to run his hands through them.
Suddenly Gauri looked up and saw his reflection through the mirror. She immediately let go of her dori and turned around with a big smile. "Shiv!!!" she exclaimed, "You are home already? Wow this is such a lovely surprise. We weren't expecting you till day after. But it's great that you are home, now you can celebrate Viraag's birthday with him." Turning back to her struggle with her dori, Gauri peeped over her shoulders and said, "I am so sorry no one was here to greet you. They have all gone to Prachi and Neev's wedding. I was just waiting till the children were in bed. If only I can get this stupid dori tied then I can leave too." She turned to look at him and said, "If you are not too tired, why don't you freshen up and join me. Everyone will be more than happy to see you and you can still surprise the family there." With those words she turned back to the mirror and her frustrating dori.
Shiv just ogled at her silently. He stared at the movement of her sensuous, pouting mouth as she spoke. The sexy ripple of her back muscles as she continued her battle with the dori. Slowly he began to walk towards her. She saw his reflection come closer in the mirror and breathlessly she whispered, "Shiv…"
He gently pushed away her hands and quietly began to tie her dori. Gauri closed her eyes as soon as she felt his hands on her bare back. His fingers teased her, one moment they were touching her flesh and the next they were not. His soft caress was giving her Goosebumps and Gauri shivered under his touch. Slowly he leaned forward, his breath tickling the sensitive spot near her ear and whispered, "All done." Gauri opened her eyes and met his in the mirror. Holding his stare she replied, "Thank you." Shiv's hands traveled lower towards her naked back. The feel of his bare hands on her bare back was too much for her and she turned around blushing and burrowing her head in his shoulder. Shiv smiled at his blushing bride and with a gentle finger under her chin, he brought her face closer to his. "You are so beautiful…"he said justas he was leaning in to kiss her. Gauri closed her eyes, waiting nervously for her first kiss.
But it never came. Suddenly she felt a violent jerk. She opened her eyes to see an angry Shiv staring at her. He jerked her forward by her arms and shouted, "What have you done? What are you trying to do? Why are you tempting me?" He pushed her away and ran a hand through his hair, he looked at her, his expression desperate, "I can't Gauri, I just can't…I am so sorry….Oh God I am so sorry!!!" Shiv stormed out of the room, leaving his weeping wife behind.
"Why…Why are you doing this to me. I thought you were supposed to be my friend. If you were not ready to let him go, then you should not have let me marry him. Why did you ruin my life?" Gauri screamed in anguish at the dark skies. Suddenly a soft voice from the doorway said, "Choti ma…" Gauri looked up to see the children looking at her worriedly. She gave them a watery smile and held out her arms for them. The children immediately ran towards her and jumped into her lap. Viraag reached out his chubby hands and wiped her tears away. Aaliya rested her head on Gauri's shoulder and said, "Please don't be sad Choti Ma. We love you, if you are sad then we will be sad too." Gauri looked at their innocent, scared faces. She pulled them closer to her heart and replied, "I love you too. I love you too."
Later that night when Shiv stepped back into the room, he saw that his wife was missing. Worried that he had finally managed to drive her away, Shiv began searching frantically through the house but he couldn't find her any where. Finally he went to the children's room and saw that both his children were snuggled up next to his wife, who was sleeping peacefully, her arms lovingly protecting the two most valued possessions in his life.
Shiv quietly left the room and closed the door behind him. He stood for a long time in front of that door, lost in thoughts.
