Chapter 5
Shiv was late again tonight. Despite his recently made promise to come home earlier, he was still late. He looked at the time in the car; it was almost 11.30 pm. Gauri was going to be so disappointed. Shiv let out a sigh. He turned up the radio; his favorite song was playing;
main jahaan rahoon
main kahin bhi hoon
teri yaad saaath hai
kisi se kahoon
ke nahi kahoon
yeh jo dil ki baat hai
kehne ko saath apane ek duniya chalti hai
per chhupke is dil mein tanhaayi palti hai
bas yaad saath hai
teri yaad saaath hai
(Film: Namastey London)
As the music played softly in the background, Shiv's thoughts wandered to the women in his life. It had been a while since Ipshita passed away but somehow her thoughts, her memories and the love that they shared still plagued him. Gauri made him happy, she made his children happy but IpshitaâŚShiv smiled as he remembered:
*FLASHBACK*
"Shiv, stop itâŚShivâŚwhat are you doing??? What if someone comes in?" Ipshita complained. Shiv tightened his arms around her burgeoning waist and teasingly replied, "What will they say??? They will say aww such a loving husband you haveâŚyou are so lucky Ipshita!!!" He saw her expression through the mirror, she was beaming when she replied, "Yes and my reply to that would be he is the lucky one to have such a beautiful and patient wife. Now let me goâŚI have things to do!!!" A pouting Shiv let her go and asked, "Only beautiful and patient not loving?" Ipshita turned to her petulant husband and answered while putting her arms around him, "BabyâŚI don't have to tell people how much I love you, its written on my face and people have to be blind or stupid not to see it." That brought a huge smile to Shiv's face and he picked her up and spun her around. Ipshita screamed, "Put me down Shiv otherwise I am going to have our son right here in our bedroom."
*END FLASHBACK*
He pulled into the parking lot and stared at his home, a home he now shared with Gauri. He knew he had to move on and Gauri made it easy. The entire household including Maya Bua and Palak were already in love with her. But he just didn't know how to let go. As he walked into the dark house, he tried to conjure up some memories of Gauri. A smiling Gauri running after the children. Gauri with smudges of flour on her face as she is making his favorite parathas. Gauri standing in front of the mirror decorating her maang with his sindoor. The thoughts of Gauri were juxtaposed with images of Ipshita smiling, her arms wide open asking him to come engulf her in his embrace. A radiant Ipshita holding Aaliya for the first time in her arms. A teasing Ipshita smearing shaving cream all over his face. Shiv fell on the couch, the images making him dizzy. He looked up towards the heavens and begged, "Tell me what to do love. Please give me a sign, something, anything. Help me move on."
At that very moment his eyes fell on a silhouette near the dining table. A worried Shiv slowly tip toed towards the figure. As he came closer, he saw that it was Gauri. She was seated at the table, her arms were on the table and her head was resting on them. She was fast asleep. Her face looked so innocent, so childlike in her sleep. The pale moonlight from the window was casting a shadow on her lovely face. She had never looked more beautiful to Shiv. He smiled, turning his head towards the window and said, "You are really sneaky you know that."
He tapped Gauri gently on her arm but she was in deep slumber and didn't wake up. Having no other choice, Shiv picked up his sleeping wife in his arms and began to head towards their room. Suddenly a drowsy Gauri opened her eyes and reached out and touched his face. "ShivâŚ" she whispered softly, her breath tickling him, "you are home. I was waiting for you. Heat up your dinnerâŚ." Gauri's words trailed as she fell back into oblivion before finishing her sentence. Shiv gently lay her down on the bed. A lock of her hair that had come undone fell on her face. Shiv reached out and tenderly swept it away. She was still wearing her sari and he knew that she would not be comfortable sleeping in it but he didn't trust himself or his emotions right now to help her change out of it.
Shiv stepped out of his dressing room, just as Gauri turned in her sleep and let out a soft snore. Shiv took his place on the couch facing her and stared at his wife for a long time. Was it possible, he wondered, was it really possible to fall in love twice in a lifetime?
