Chapter 7

Gauri stood at the window watching the children playing in the garden. She smiled as she watched Viraag chase his older sister around. They were the only reason she was still here, pretending to happily live a life of misery. She silently wiped away an errant tear as she recalled the events of the past few days.
Since their almost kiss, whatever friendship Shiv and her had shared before seemed to have completely disappeared. Shiv stoically ignored her after the incident. He came down for breakfast after she left for work and he returned from office in the wee hours of the night, long after everyone in the house, including Gauri, had gone to sleep. Since the only relationship she valued anymore was the one she had with the children, she usually ended up spending her nights in their room.
The entire family had noticed the strain in their relationship, it wasn't easy for anyone. Vivan kept blaming himself, despite Gauri's constant reassurance that it had nothing to do with him.
"I shouldn't have changed you boudi. I should have realized that to Bhai you were perfect the way you were. I am so sorry boudi. I am so very sorry."
The children were affected as well. Not only did they rarely see their father nowadays but even their Choti ma, who was usually very playful with them, seemed more and more melancholy lately and hardly ever wanted to play with them.
Gauri looked out the window again and saw Aaliya wave to her. She waved back with smile thinking, "I have to try harder for them."
Suddenly a blood curdling scream pierced through Gauri's thoughts. A shaken Gauri tried to locate the source of it and realized that it had come from the garden, where the children were playing. She ran down the stairs, "What's wrong Palak? Who screamed? Where are the children? I thought you were keeping an eye on them, so where the hell are they?"
A weeping Palak replied breathlessly through her sobs, "Boudi…."
"What Palak?" an impatient Gauri demanded.
"Boudi…Aaliya was climbing that tree and…."
"And what Palak?" Gauri asked desperately, repressing the urge to shake an answer out of her now bawling sister-in-law.
"Boudi she fell on her head and now she won't wake up. She is bleeding…."
"Where is she?" Gauri asked already rushing towards the tree that her daughter might have fallen from.
"Vivan is checking on her over there."
Gauri looked over to see Vivan crouching over a motionless Aaliya. He was trying desperately to revive his niece through CPR but there was still no response. Gauri screamed out to Palak, "Call for an ambulance." Palak stayed rooted, staring at her bleeding niece, "Now Palak!" Gauri literally pushed her toward the house.
Gauri pushed Vivan away and pulled a still unconscious Aaliya into her arms. She held up her daughter's limp hand and tried to feel for a pulse, tears were streaming down her cheeks, "please God" she begged, "Please let there be a pulse." Gauri breathed a sigh of relief when she felt a faint but steady pulse. She looked over at Vivan, whose eyes were also watering by now and said, "We can't wait for the ambulance." Vivan nodded and picking up his niece in his arms, he ran towards the car, Gauri followed close behind.
As soon as they got to the hospital, Aaliya was rushed into the ER. Gauri followed her daughter and the doctors while Vivan stayed back to fill out all the paperwork. Gauri watched as the doctors hovered over her precious child. They stuck the little girl with various needles and tubes and whenever Gauri demanded to know what was going on, all they would say is that they are running tests and she has to be patient and allow them to do their job.
Time seemed to progress at a snail's pace. Vivan walked over to his frantic boudi and put a reassuring arm around her, "I just called Bhai, he will be here any minute. Please Boudi, I know there is no point in telling you to stop worrying because that will probably not happen but at least sit down and take a breath."
Gauri gave Vivan a fierce look and said, "This is not the time to be funny Vivan. What is taking them so long? What is wrong with them? What kind of doctors are they, they can't even tell me what's wrong with my daughter. Why won't she wake up?"
Vivan caught sight of his brother and waved him over. An anxious Shiv ran to their side and breathlessly asked, "What's going on?"
Gauri who had so far been oblivious to his presence, finally seemed to notice him. She rushed over to Shiv and grabbing him by the collar she begged, "Please Shiv…Please find out why they haven't fixed her yet?"
At that very moment a grim looking doctor came out of their daughter's room. Shiv and Gauri immediately went to him and began demanding answers. The doctor patiently sat them down and said, "Your daughter fell on her head and that can be pretty serious. We cannot know for sure how serious till she actually regains consciousness. We will only have a reason to worry if she does not wake up within the next 48 hours. I am afraid that till then there is nothing that can be done except pray."
"What the hell kind of doctor are you, how can you just give up and tell us to pray?"
"I am sorry Mrs. Kapoor, I know how hard this must be for you…"
"Hard? You have no idea! That's my daughter in there, my little girl. Please doctor, please you have to fix her." Gauri fell sobbing at the doctor's feet.
Shiv merely nodded at the doctor and stepped forward to help his sobbing wife up. Gauri shrugged off his hands and giving him an angry glare she said, "Don't touch me. Don't you dare touch me. This is your fault. You have no time for your family, for your children, so don't start pretending that you care now. Stay away from me." A weeping Gauri stormed away leaving a sad and broken Shiv behind.

Chapter 8

Gauri flopped down on the rigid, wooden benches of the hospital church. Tears were flowing continuously down her cheeks. With her head bowed low she quietly whispered, "I had no idea you were so selfish Ippy. I also had no idea you hated me so much. First you allow me to marry a man who has always loved you and has no intentions of ever letting you go. And now…." Gauri looked up when she said those word, "Now that I have finally reconciled with the fact that the only loving relationship I will ever have, in that mausoleum of a house, is with the children, you decided you want them too? Well too bad because I won't let that happen. I am not going to let you take Aaliya away from me. And what about Shiv, huh Ippy? You were always gushing about how you loved him so much and you always wanted to see him happy. Does he look happy to you now? You betrayed him, you left him and now you want to take his daughter away too? Seriously Ippy get over yourself…Stop torturing us….please…." Gauri broke down on the last please.
A gentle hand squeezed her shoulder; she turned around to see her husband sitting on the bench behind her. She could not deal with this right now, it was all too much. For the second time that day she shrugged away from the touch that usually gave her so much peace and pleasure. She stepped away from him and began to leave.
Shiv reached out and grabbed her hand, stopping her in her tracks. "Please…" he whispered, a broken man, "I need you Gauri...I am so scared" and then he looked up at her, his eyes full of fear and unshed tears, "What if she dies Gauri?" Gauri could not bear to see him like this; she gently reached out and placed a comforting hand on his head. Shiv immediately pulled her closer and buried his head in her waist drenching her thin, cotton sari with his silent sobs, "I don't know….how….what….." he tried to get out between his muffled sobs. Gauri held on to him and ran her soft hands through his hair, allowing him to let it out and maybe even let go.
Nikhila saw the embracing couple through the church door. She had seen her son head in that direction and had wanted to go to him and ease his pain but seeing Gauri soothe away his fears and share his sorrow, Nikhila smiled sadly thinking, "You chose well Ipshita…you chose well…"

* START FLASHBACK *

"Mama Will you do something for me?" a breathless Ipshita asked pulling the oxygen mask away from her face.
"Anything, my child" replied a sobbing Nikhila
"Mama I want you to get Shiv remarried." Ipshita said with unwavering determination
"Ipshita beta….don't talk like that. You just concentrate on getting better that we wont have to worry about finding your replacement." Nikhila said as she ran a calming hand through Ipshita's hair.
Ipshita held onto Nikhila's hand with uncanny strength and repeated, "Mama, promise me that you will get Shiv remarried."
Looking at Ipshita's desperately pleading eyes, Nikhila nodded through her tears, "I promise bacha, I promise. Now please get some rest."
Ipshita let out a sigh of relief and continued, "I want Gauri to be Shiv's wife."
Nikhila gave her dying daughter-in-law a surprised look and echoed, "Gauri!!!" Silently wondering why Ipshita would want her best friend to take her place.
"Yes Gauri." Ipshita smiled as she looked toward her husband, who was pacing anxiously in the hallway outside her room, "Mama you know how stubborn Shiv is. He will die a silent death inside but he will never let anyone know how truly sad he is. He will never let anyone make him happy. But I know Gauri. She is a magician mama. Her heart is so pure and so full of love that she can't help but make everyone around her happy. I know she has always loved him and trust me Mama, it's not at all hard to fall in love with her, she's so beautiful both inside and out. Besides Aaliya already looks upon her as a mother figure and Viraag, he's only a baby, he won't know the difference." Ipshita looked back at her Mother-in-law and said in a calm and strong voice, "Trust me Mama, Shiv and Gauri are meant to be, they just don't know it yet."

* END FLASHBACK *

Nikhila wiped away her tears as she looked at her son embracing the woman Ipshita had put so much faith in. She looked up towards heaven and gave a silent nod of thanks. Quietly shutting the door, Nikhila turned around and saw a frantic Vivan running towards her.
"Badi ma, have you seen Boudi or Bhai?" he asked struggling to catch his breath.
"Yah they are in the church." Vivan reached out towards the knob of the door but before he could open it, Nikhila stopped him, "What is it Vivan?"
Vivan looked at her and said, "Aaliya has regained consciousness and the doctor's want to talk to them about her case."
Before Vivan could even finish his sentence, Nikhila burst through the door interrupting the intimate scene. Gauri abruptly pulled out of Shiv's embrace and Shiv jumped to his feet and turned to his mother asking, "What's going on Ma?" Gauri looked at her mother-in-law intently and fearfully whispered, "Aaliya…."
Hearing her quivering voice, Shiv reached out and took Gauri's hand in his as he waited for his mother's reply.
"She is conscious beta. The doctor's want to see you…they are waiting…." Nikhila never got to finish her sentence. The moment they heard that their daughter was conscious, both Shiv and Gauri had sped out the church and toward their daughter's room.
