Part Six
Gauri was feeling as though someone stabbed her in the stomach. She did not know what to expect. Did not know whether she should grasp for hope.
It was killing her because she did not know.
*
Shiv saw her walking down the steps, for the second time within an hour, and yet, he still felt as though he just layed eyes on her. "I don't think I will ever tire of looking at her" Shiv thought to himself.
Baba spoke first.
"Shiv, Maheen, please, do not say a word, just listin to what i have to say."
"Baba--"
"SHIV NOT A WORD!" Baba's loud remark got everybody's attention.
Gauri stood by her Baba's side, her head held high, but her eyes full of fear of what was to come.
"I must tell you something Maheen. I am humbled that you wish to marry my Gauri, however, there is one thing that you must know."
Gauri felt like shrinking into the floor. Never before did her inability bother her, but today, for some reason, she did not want to feel humiliated.
"Mere beti gungi hai" Baba spoke the words.
Time stopped.
No body from Maheens family said anything.
Nikila said in her head: Well, i guess there is something different about the girl. How funny. Bechari gongi hai. Thank god. My son's little infatuation will evaporate.
Shiv opened his mouth to speak.....
