Part Eighteen
Gauri felt nauseous.
And oddly hollow.
Her throat burned.
And her eyes felt heavy.
Where was she?
Gauri tried to open her eyes, but they seemed so heavy.
She moved her head to the left, and tried to move her arm's, and that to became a difficult task.
*
"Shiv, please do not worry, she will be okay, I promise you"
Nikhila let her self say the words, she needed to sound like a good mother.
Even though she ordered men to shoot her would be Daughter in law.
Shiv turned his face towards his mother.
"Maa, I didn't even get to experience life with her yet, I would not be able to bear it if anything happened to her, because I know for a fact that she is hurt because she is to marry me"
Nikhila patted her son on the shoulder.
"I do not think I can marry her maa, if it means that I cannot marry her to save her life, then I guess that is what I have to do"
Nikhila hugged her son.
And smiled.
Brightly.
*
"Thank you for doing your job Mr. Waiter"
Ipshita gave the waiter another wad of bills for getting the job done.
Now, all she had to do was wait for the good news.
*
Gauri was finally able to open her eyes, however, the brightness of the light caused a sharp pain, and she quickly closed them.
The nurse noticed the movement.
*
"Excuse me, Gauri madam ko hoosh agaya."
Everyone turned to the sound of the nurses voice.
Shiv shot up form his seat.
"The doctor, said, however, that only one person may go in, and only for a few minutes, because the anesthesia has yet to subside."
Baba took a step forward, but he looked into Shiv's bloodshot eyes, and took a step back.
"Shiv, beta, jaa"
Shiv gave Baba a gratifying look, and rushed into the room.
*
Shiv's heart was racing.
What if she did loose her sight.
My god.
He would die.
*
Her eyes were still closed.
Shiv walked up towards the bed.
"Gauri, you hear me?"
Gauri flinched.
"Gauri, it's me. Shiv"
A small smile touched her lips.
"Can you do something for me?"
If Shiv were to blink, he would have missed her slight nod.
"Open your eyes sweetheart"
Gauri's forehead frowned in frustration.
Her eyes felt so heavy.
She made an effort to open them.
Slowly.
Inch by inch.
*
Shiv knelt close to Gauri.
His palms were sweating with anticipation.
He seemed to stop breathing.
Her eyes opened.
*
"Gauri, jaan, main nazar athi ho?"
*
What an odd question Gauri thought
*
Why wouldn't she answer him.
"Gauri?"
*
Gauri made another effort to lift her hand to his face.
She touched his cheek.
And smiled.
*
Shiv felt a tear roll down his cheek.
He grabbed her hand.
And kissed her palm.
*
Maheen ran to Shiv as he made his way out of Gauri's room.
"Son?"
He asked cautiously.
Shiv looked up at his father, and for the first time in years....
He hugged him.
"Papa, woh tikh hai"
Maheen stood without moving for a moment.
For the first time in years, Shiv called him papa, and the greatest thing-Shiv was hugging him.
Maheen felt a small tear roll down his cheek.
"That's good to hear beta"
Shiv realized what he was doing, and quickly stepped away form his father.
He looked down at his shoes, and ran his hand over his face.
He looked up at everyone, with a smile.
"She's going to be just fine."
The whole room changed.
Everyone smiled, prayed, hugged, laughed.
They were set free.
*
"WHAT THE HECK! YOUR SERIOUS!!"
Ipshita was in a rage.
Dammit!
*
Nikhila pasted a smile on her face.
Dammit.
She should have just shot Gauri herself.
*
Inspector Patel hung up his gun.
His phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Mr. Patel, this is Mr. Shiv Kapoor speaking."
Patel smiled.
"Tell me Mr. Kapoor, how may I serve you?"
"I want you to start a severe investigation."
"Investigate what sir?"
Patel asked questionably.
"There have been a number of attacks made on my fiance, Ms. Gauri Chaterji, the most recent being yesterday night, at our engagement. I want you to find the culprit. As soon as possible."
Patel had heard about that on television this morning, but did not manage to get the whole thing.
"Yes Mr. Kapoor, I will gather a team right now. I will call you within an hour to get all the information."
"Good."
Shiv hung up.
"Pande! Get Rathor on the line"
Patel picked up his gun.
*
It was time for Nikhila to talk to Shiv.
"Shiv, beta, you were telling me how you think it would be best to step out of Gauir's life, beta, I think that is best. For her."
Shiv had thought about that.
"Maa, I too have been thinking the same thing"
Nikhila felt released.
"But...." Shiv continued.
"I think the best thing for me to do is marry her, because I cannot live without her, however, I have a plan in which both can be achieved."
Nikhla frowned.
Plan?
"Plan? Beta, what do you mean?"
Shiv smiled.
"Time will tell mother."
He walked away, leaving Nikhila confused and frustrated.
