Geetanjali Tikekar, Apo*na of Kasauti Zindagi Kay, is back to entertain the audiences. But this time, not as the villainous Apo*na but as Maya in Karam Apna Apna. Yes, she is back to being anything but a good girl. "Flamboyant, self-centered, attention seeking and always smiling, that's Maya." She lives in her father's house and is a typical bitchy nanad. Maya thinks that like sons, daughters too have equal rights to their parents' house and property. Behind her sweet smile is a smart tongue that's always waiting to mouth a few barbs. "When she speaks it is difficult to make out whether she is complimenting or insulting someone," says Geetanjali.

"Maya is a grey character unlike Apo*na who started off as a positive character and turned totally black," says the petite actress who admits that she loves portraying negative characters. "Positive roles have a slow journey and take long time to strike a chord with viewers. Negative roles get an instant response. Which is why I love Maya's character. She is bitchy, moody and swings between positive and negative."

Surprisingly, despite all the name and fame and good roles coming her way Geetanjali confesses that she is a misfit as an actress. "I feel out of place in front of the camera." That's probably because she would love to be a technician. Having done a course in cinematography and video formatting, Geetanjali feels she is cut out to be a cameraman and director. Movies aren't her scene either because she confesses that she can't dance.
Nobody will believe it, but apart from directing she also want to be a farmer! "We have land in Pune where my family lives. Some day I would like to do farming. At heart I am a farm girl."

NEW SERIAL
Destiny beckons

Does karma shape one's life or does every individual chart out the course of his or her own destiny?
Ekta Kapoor's latest show Karam Apna Apna on STAR Plus delves into this very aspect...
Actors struggle for days, weeks and months to reach their photographs inside the precincts of the successful soap house called Balaji Telefilms and wait for months for a call. Many are never called for an audition. Others do give auditions but never get roles. But some, like Pallavi Subhash, had never visited Balaji. Two months ago, the actress of Marathi theatre and serials made an entry in Zee's Tumhari Disha and Ekta who was scouting for a new face to play Gauri in her new show Karam Apna Apna (KAA) saw Pallavi in a scene and decided to cast the young girl in the coveted role. Call it destiny or coincidence but Pallavi believes that it was destiny that brought her way the big role in a big show of the biggest production house. At least that's what she says and believes when you meet her on the sets of KAA at Balaji Studio in suburban Mumbai. "I had never visited Balaji to leave my photos and out of a blue I got a call from there asking me to audition for the role. Things just took off from there," says the young, and confident actress admitting that it took her time to digest the fact that she was doing a lead role in a Balaji show. "It's not only a challenge but a big responsibility to live up to everyone's expectations because it is a big show and for the first time in my career I am working in a big set up. Of course my director is helping me a lot." Working in a big set up and with well-known co-actors can easily dent a young actor's confidence. That's probably the reason why she was intimidated by co-star Iqbal Khan's presence on the sets. But Iqbal doesn't think Pallavi felt nervous working with him. "I don't think she was intimidated by my presence. Pallavi is not only a good-looking girl but also a very confident actress. She is also very hard working," says the handsome hunk who plays Shiv in KAA which is a story of a middle class and not-so-ambitious girl from Kolkata who wants to see her family happy. But destiny has something else in store for her. Shashank who works in her father's friend Mahen Kapoor's company as an accountant is her fiance. Mahen too wants Shashank to get married to Gauri. But a twist of fate changes the course of her life. "Shashank is a nice and straight-forward guy, quite unlike Gautam that I have played in Kyunki...," says Sumeet Sachdev who plays Shashank. "Mahen feels I am the ideal guy for Gauri and wants me to marry her. After that something happens which can't be revealed because it will kill the suspense." Iqbal who plays Mahen's youngest son Shiv, a flamboyant, party-hopping and charismatic man with good communication skills also declines to talk about the sudden twist in the story that changes Gauri life completely. "Shiv knows Gauri since her childhood. After her marriage to Shashank a major twist happens that results in a triangular relationship," says Iqbal who describes Shiv as a mixture of three-piece suit and denim.
What's for sure is that KAA is a story of an extra-marital affair, two families and many characters that include Sugna, a socialite and a successful writer famous for writing on scandalous and taboo subjects like sex and other issues, played by Roopa Ganguly, Rana(Rajiv Paul), an adopted child in the Kapoor family, Rana's wife Shibani(Delnaz Paul), Mahen's brother Daksh (Vinay Jain), a philanderer, Daksh's wife Shyala(Jaya Bhattacharya) who is upset with her husband's extra-marital affair, Mahen's sister Maya(Geetanjali Tikekar) who lives in her parents house with her hsband Ayush and many more like Vivan, Prasanjit and Josh. Maya, according to Geetanjali, is a self-centered, attention seeking and always smiling woman. "She is a typical bitchy nanad. She thinks that like sons, daughters too have equal rights to their parents' house and property. Behind her sweet smile is a smart tongue that's always waiting to let out a barb. When she speaks it is difficult to make out whether she is complimenting or insulting someone," says Geetanjali, better known as Apo*na of Kasautii Zindagi Kay. "Maya is a gray character unlike Apo*na who started as a positive character and turned totally back." After Tulsi, Parvati, Prerna, Kashish and Kumkum, all popular prime time faces of STAR Plus, the channel is all geared up to launch Gauri as its new prime time star. What remains to be seen is whether Gauri reaches that iconic status and moreover, like Mihir, Om, Anurag and Bajaj, whether Shiv and Shashank will also enjoy similar success.

Pooja Ruparel

Pooja Ruparel, Kajol's little sister in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge can now be seen in Baa Bahu or Baby. This lucky actress started her career with Shah Rukh Khan. He too starred in her first film King Uncle. Although she acted in the comedy show LOC — Life Out Of Control, Baa.. is her first full fledged soap on TV.

Talking about her role in Baa.. she says, "I am playing the role of a rich, talented, upright and righteous girl called Falguni who is an expert in sculptures. As the story progresses Falguni who is an acquaintance of Hemal will eventually become his love interest. When asked why she wasn't seen in any movie or serial for a long time she says, "I wanted to concentrate on my studies." But in between she did a couple of commercials for Kit-Kat, Surf Excel and Hajmola Candy. Now though we will get to see her regularly as the soap airs during the weekend.

Gunjan Vijaya

Gunjan Vijaya shifted to Mumbai one-and-half-years ago and then landed a role in Hare Kaanch Ki Choondiya. When her role came to an end Gunjan moved on to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi where she plays Mohini's daughter Archita. "Archita is the youngest in the new generation of characters and is loved by everyone. But she is scared of Bhoomi. I can't reveal the cause, but there is a definite reason for it," says Gunjan.

The actress has found her friends in co-actors Reshmi Ghosh, Mouni, Naman Shaw and Pulkit. The one thing they have in common is that they are all Bengalis. The actress will soon be seen in Balaji's Karbon Copy.

Rahul Jagtiani

Rahul Jagtiani auditioned for three shows which got delayed before he landed the part of Josh in Karam Apna Apna. Talking about his role he says, "I am playing Maya's (Geetanjali Tikekar) son and Mahen's nephew. Josh is into parties and womanising and he is always at the wrong place at the wrong time. His aim is to block Vivan's entry into the Kapoor family business," elaborates Rahul, adding further that Josh is a grey character. Josh is flamboyant and aggressive but Rahul is not. "I can identify with his flamboyance but by nature I am a bit shy and not too aggressive a person," says Rahul who studied in the US and worked in Washington DC before coming to India.

Karan Kapoor

Karan Kapoor who acted in Ram Gopal Verma's Sarkar wanted to work in serials. "Unless you have prominent roles in films you don't get noticed. Besides you don't have more than one or two releases in a year. But on TV you are seen everyday," reasons the young actor who gave as many as 60 auditions for Balaji Telefilms. Ekta didn't disappoint him although at some stage Karan must have got tired of giving audition after audition.

"No I didn't get disappointed. I think it was part of the job till I landed a role in a Balaji show," says Karan who plays Prasanjeet in Karam Apna Apna. "I am playing the son of a big socialite (Sugna, played by Roopa Ganguli) and writer who is famous for writing on scandalous and taboo subjects. She lives on her own terms and wishes the same for her children. She gives them the freedom to grow as individuals and make their own personal identities. Pransanjeet has studied in London where he met his love interest Palak. All in all it's an interesting role," says the happy actor.

Vinay's gift to Big B
By: Shaheen Parkar
September 14, 2006

Vinay Jain with Amitabh Bachchan on the sets of Cheeni Kam in London
Vinay Jain is back from London after shooting for ad filmmaker Balkhi's big screen outing, Cheeni Kam.

The film, which stars Amitabh Bachchan, Tabu and Paresh Rawal, has Jain playing the role of Bachchan's neighbour — the father of a young girl who has a special bond with Big B's character.

Inspiring

Jain had carried a special gift for Bachchan — an inspiring coffee table book of photos and poems by the well-known Japanese poet laureate and Buddhist philosopher, Dr Daisaku Ikeda.

"The book celebrates the indomitable human spirit. And I thought it would definitely strike a chord because Big B's life is an epitome of the indomitable spirit. It was nice of him to actually go through the book and tell me what he thought about it the next day on the sets," says Jain.

Special moment

"I was excited about sharing screen space with the Big B. It was more of a learning experience for me. The way he conducts himself on the sets and how he makes it a point to be concerned about everyone. Even before I was introduced to him on Day One, he knew my name! For me, it was a joy to work with the biggies in their fields — the Big B, director Balkhi and cinematographer P C Sriram who has worked in Mani Ratnam films They are all so mentally alert."

Though Jain has done films earlier, he considers Cheeni Kam a landmark event. "The London trip was wonderful not only in terms of work and interaction with the biggies but also getting a feel of London. I caught up with old friends, watched plays on West End, checked out museums."

Career graph

On the small screen, Jain features as the gregarious Daksh Kapoor in the Balaji show Karam Apna Apna on Star Plus. He earlier featured in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (Sony) and in Remix (Star One). On the stage front, he features in Two To Tango (with Tanaaz Lal) and in Sharaarat (with Shweta Tiwari). Jain will also be seen in the Anil Kapoor produced Gandhi, My Father, directed by Feroz Khan, in which he features as Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, Kantilal.

On the personal front, Jain's son, Ranveer, turns a year old next month. "I will be in New Delhi performing on stage and I hope to make it a family outing with my wife Chaitna."

It is not easy being a Muslim: Iqbal Khan
by Subhash K Jha

It's not easy being a Muslim right now.

TV superstar Iqbal Khan discovered this when he headed for the American Embassy for a visa to attend a celeb-presence event in the US and Canada between 20 September and 2 October.

Iqbal's request for a visa was turned down.

"Why me?! I've been asking myself this since I was turned down. There were fourteen of us from television, a majority were ladies including Kanchi Kaul and Sakshi Tanwar. I was the first one to reach the Embassy early in the morning. I was the only Muslim. I was the only one denied a visa. Only because my name is Mohammed Iqbal Khan?"

Iqbal tries hard to suppress his emotions. "The lady at the Embassy said there're three bad people (suspected terrorists) with that name and that they'd have to put me through a fingerprint-scan in Washington. She then made took my fingerprint test. My hands were blackened like any suspected criminal."

Iqbal says for the first time he felt isolated as a Muslim. "This event in the US and Canada was supposed to pay for the house that I am buying for me and my fiance before our marriage. Now I can't afford it.

Why was I treated this way? It's not as if I'm an unknown. In fact when the lady at the embassy asked me if I was a known face I was too embarrassed to say who I was. Some Indians in the room told her who I was. I still had to go through the finger print test, still had to be treated like a suspect."

He says this is his second experience at visa discrimination in two months. "Earlier I was denied a visa to the UK. But I didn't connect it with the situation of terrorism. Now when I think back there were two Muslims in that team to UK and we were both denied visas."

Iqbal admits he's scared. "We're living in troubled times anything can happen. Earlier I used to hear it was difficult for Gujaratis to get visas to the US. I've never had this experience before. Now I wonder when I'd be allowed out of the country! I'm getting married in January. I had big plans for my fiance and I for a honeymoon abroad. Would we be allowed to go?"

Balaji serials have always been known for their extravagance but now it seems the extravagance is reaching new levels. It's been reported that a whopping Rs 70 lakhs have been spent on the sets just for a two-day shoot of the ambitious daily Karam Apna Apna.Sources close to Balaji Telefilms have confirmed the news. The production team has also highlighted the lavish budget spent.

"We used lots of variations while designing the sets like Salil Ankola's house. He is playing a business tycoon. So we wanted to give his house a modern look along with simplicity. Speaking of locations in Kolkota, we shot in different places like Victoria Memorial, Rajbari Palace etc," informs Smita, official set designer of Balaji Telefilms. "We shot at Rajbari because it has the look of a typical Bengali house, very ancestral and charming. We rented that location for our shoot but I have no idea about the cost incurred. While working with Balaji, we are allowed to use our ideas without worrying about the cost effectiveness. Balaji never compromises on the cost factor," concludes Smita.

Balaji people might be allowed to think lavishly, but not talk about it as was evident from the fact that no one was ready to confirm the cost. "I can say that the sets are very beautiful and I enjoyed working. I still feel like going back to Kolkata. But I have no idea about the cost of the sets, its better you speak to the production guys," says Pallavi Subhash — lead actress of the serial.   ;   ;

Sans make-up nobody recognises me: Gitanjali

Not satisfied just being an actor, Gitanjali Tikkekar wants to be a director.

Known for her negative character Apo*na in 'Kasauti... ' (Star Plus), Geetanjali Tikkekar has indeed come a long way in proving her acting prowess and is seen in Balaji's new serial 'Karam Apnaa Apnaa' (Star Plus) as the snobbish nanand Maya. Her character Maya is not entirely grey, however she adds that Maya is a completely self centered woman. Geetanjali feels that the USP of this daily soap is that it has a glossy star cast and also highlights the fact that a woman being strong does not make them immune to pain.

She revealed that she is not satisfied with her acting career. "I am not satisfied with my career. This is not where I had wanted to be. I always wanted to be a technician and had done a course in Pune. So very soon, I would like to be a director."

She also claims that given this chance she would like to change the face of television. Prod her and she says, "Abroad they have seasons while shooting. They have this entire bank of episodes ready. Here, what we shoot today will be aired on television two days later. This is the reason that actors have to follow a very hectic schedule. I would like to change this aspect of television when I become the director."

Geetanjali claims that once make up is removed nobody recognizes her, "I have never been accosted by fans because nobody recognizes me when I don't have make-up on my face. Even when I go to the malls, I am never recognized because I tie up my hair into a bun and put on my specs."

Recently, Geetanjali walked into the sets with her make-up on when she was stopped by Star TV for a news byte. She told them that she would return after some time. "Later, I passed the TV crew devoid of any make-up and nobody seemed to have recognized me. I sat in my car and left without anyone realizing it," smiles Geetanjali.

Pallavi capitalises on newfound success

Pallavi Subhash, who plays the lead Gauri in Karam Apna Apna is one smart cookie. The actress who has now become a recognisable face in the country, especially Mumbai, is taking full advantage of her new found success. She has coaxed the producers of her Marathi film to release it in Mumbai, because people know who she is now. The film was otherwise lying in the cans for months without any hope of ever hitting a single movie screen.
