I saw the show a while back. My recent disappointments with our home show, especially because there are many similarities between them made me want to re-watch many of the episodes. So the impressions are fresh once again...
Our home show has the advantage of two excellent actors who excelled at appearing so natural in their interactions till the 80s to 90s. Even if they were not passionate, their glances and connection, the therav in their scenes made them great. Not to mention the lovely flow and growth in their relationship. They were also two admirable and honourable individuals we could root for..so much of that has been squandered away unfortunately..
KYY on the other hand actually started with raw lead actors and they were made to exaggerate their traits in the initial episodes which combined with the college backdrop made it a little difficult for us to appreciate initially. Now when I go back, I can appreciate even the initial ones because the storyline was never bad..
Some thoughts -
- It is from the Diwali episode onwards that I really started liking Manik and Nandini. From here on they could easily pass off for a couple in their 20s. Same for the rest.
-Cabir is excellent in the Diwali episodes - his break up related scenes
-I like how the makers use the contemporary setting and the age of the characters to show budding romantic relationships that are not immediately named, that are spontaneous..
-Looking back, Manan's Diwali makeout scene along with the music is quite hot. Even better is how they use it to show the changed equation. Manik ordering Nandini to meet him in a classroom next day and Nandini understanding his intentions and refusing quite nonchalantly without acting like a prude...as we go along we realize that in all these little little ways Nandini asserts herself and drives Manik mad who is simply captivated by her!!
-Musicana night is excellent. A great turning point for this coming of age story
-Nandini is amazing from here on, the way she handles the break up. She cries and cries but gathers herself and even tries ti shame Manik (she does not know initially why he did it)
-I loved how the makers managed to make us feel for both of them. Manik breaks up with her but is never callous. He is unable to break up, after break up, cannot leave her alone. Not stalking but watching out for her, her feelings. The tension between them, the yearning (from Manik's end), Manik relentlessly pursuing her like a man once the truth is out is all a treat
-I love the episode in the jungle - I will not reveal too much as Malvika has to watch it
-I really like how they linked everyone's stories. Dhruv/Alia, Manik/Nandini, Cabir..The never have a I ever game brings out this complicated situation quite well
-Cabir's scenes with Manik and Manik and Nandini . Arch, you already described them well
-One more aspect to admire - It is not easy to keep bringing in freshness into the looks and touches but they do it. The makers and actors both. They also keep upping the intimacy levels, their body language in line with the stage of the relationship
-They also have the characters behaving and acting just the way we would expect in a given situation/ Just for the same of drama/twist they do not alter the emotions you would logically expect the characters to experience. When will our makers learn that it is useless trying to "surprise" the audience by making the characters behave in a way the would not/should not. it just frustrates the viewers. It is far more satisfactory for them to demonstrate the expected emotions. They just have to work on making it interesting for the viewers with the dialogues, acting, story etc.
