Yaariaan of SPACE-part 34 updated 03 May

Hi all, I am new here. Trying a hand at writing FF's. Please bear with me 😕 😕


This story is adapted from the show 'Kaisi yeh yaariaan'- the characters are all the same.. But the story is different. SPACE is not a music college but stands for ' School of Pioneer Architecture and Civil Engineering '. The fab 5 , Nandini and Navya are architecture students. Fab 5 is a famous band . Part 1 Mangalore- a much awaited letter arrives



' Nandini, kanna, there is a registered letter for you. Please come and collect it'
Nandini had just drifted off to a nap when she heard her amms call out to her. No sooner had she heard the word ' registered letter' Nandini gave a cry of excitement. She had been waiting for this letter for so long. This letter will determine her future.. Her future to her dream career- of being an architect. Her amms, a well renowned classical singer and teacher, who runs a music school successfully had always wanted her to follow her footsteps. Her own mother was also a good singer and Nandini too had been a student of her amms. But now having completed her 12th grade , she wanted to live her fathers dream - of being an architect. And that is where SPACE comes up. SPACE , an architectural college in Mumbai gives equal importance to engineering studies, but allows its students to indulge in their passion be it music , photography or any other interests. They have clubs for extra curricular activities which gives the students freedom to choose any activities outside of classroom. Music club of SPACE is well known and strong.this is the aspect of SPACE that attracted Nandini to that college. she can per sue her music passion As well as her dream career. Now is the time to know if she's been successful in getting through the tough entrance exam for scholarship to SPACE.
Within a few minutes, Nandini had signed for the registered letter and was tearing through the envelope. Her heart beating fast, Nandini had a feeling that something really important was going to happen soon. Within minutes, the atmosphere of the whole house changed... SPACE has accepted Nandini Murthy for the 5 years Architectural course with full scholarship and she has to join after 2 weeks.
Little did Nandini know that her life is going to change drastically after 2 weeks.

Part 2 A peek into the Murthy's

It was finally decided that Nandini's Chittappa who resides in Mumbai would come and take Nandini to Mumbai way ahead of joining classes so that she can settle down properly. Chittappa Mr. Ramesh Murthy is her father's younger brother. His wife Shanoo is of Punjabi origin and they had no children of their own. Nandini and Rishabh were like their own especially after their parents passed away in a car accident when Nandini was just nine years old. Rishabh was just four at the time and if not for Amms who held herself together to bring up her son's children, Nandini and Rishabh would have not been able to sail through those difficult times. But due to this, the three of them were well bonded and now it is difficult to be separated. The thought of leaving behind Rishabh and Amms was enough for Nandini to break down. But Amms would hear nothing of it. She again stood firm. But Rishabh was altogether different matter. He was so inconsolable that finally Amms decided to send him also along with them. One another reason for this decision was that Nandini was the only person who could deal with Rishu when he had fits attacks. Rishu had started getting fits after their parents accident. The doctors says that it's the shock and the best way to prevention occurrence is to always keep him happy. Amms knew that Rishu wouldn't be happy without Nandu and so it was decided that Nandu and Rishu would relocate to Mumbai and Rishu can join a school in Mumbai. Shanoo chittamma was the happiest to hear this and so arrangements were made to fly to Mumbai.
"Nandu, are you all done with your packing? Do you need some help?" Chittamma rushed into Nandu's room like a kid. Chittamma was always like that- very easy going and fun loving- just like any other Punjabis.
" no chittamma, I am almost done. Thanks anyway"
" arre, what is this, chittamma chittamma, I always wanted to tell you. Now that you are moving to Mumbai , you should call us chachi and chacha. Ok?"
Nandini couldn't help smiling to herself at chittamma's child like innocence.
" ok chachi...chittamma... Oops chachi" said Nandu slightly pinching chachi's cheeks. Nandu found it a good idea. Chachi sounds better. So chachi , it will be.
"U know Nandu, I have always wanted you both to come and stay with us... I always considered you our children. You know that. Don't you? "
" yes, chachi. And I love you" Nandu said kissing chachi's cheeks. The heaviness that had settled on her chest due to moving to an unknown place reduced a bit and once again excitement bubbled in her mind. " don't worry Nandu. Everything will be fine.
After bidding a tearful goodbye to Amms, they arrived at the airport. While chacha was handling the luggages and placing them on the belt, Nandu saw a weighing machine with fortune tickets. Nandu had always been fascinated by them from childhood. Now that she is moving to another phase of her life, how can she miss this opportunity to know what is in store for her. Nandu had developed this habit from her mom who used to say that the fortune teller is always correct. Nandu rushed over and after inserting a coin , climbed on the machine. Immediately she got a card which read like this" You will be the custodian of someone's valuable thing today. Hold to it because that will lead to your future" now, Nandu was highly puzzled. Ayyo, now , what could this mean". Belatedly, Nandu remembered that they were screening their luggages and was rushing over to check for her family when she bumped into something hard and she toppled over. It was so sudden, Nandu only realized what exactly happened much later when she went over the whole incident.

Part 3 - the first meet

After the great fall, the next thing Nandu realized was that she was lying on the floor, in a very unladylike fashion. Holding together her wits, Nandu stood up and turned to see who had hit her when she saw a group of five moving away from her. Three boys and two girls, all in a line the centre one was the tallest and had a guitar at his back. The other two boys were standing at the two extreme edge with the girls in between. They made a good sight although she could not see their faces. It dawned on her that she had been hit by the guitar. Two of the boys were carrying guitar with them. The short one with a cap on head walking at one end and the middle tall guy had guitars with them. Who must have hit her and how rude of them to have just walked away without a backward glance. Nandu became very angry " ayyo, how mean and rude... What do they think of themselves? Wish I could teach them a lesson" . Nandu's attention again went to the five who were walking as if they owned the world. The girls were dressed very boldly and all of them had a similar logo on their tees. Something was written on it which Nandu could not read properly. It was at this moment that Nandu 's glance fell on a guitar striker on the floor. Nandu picked it up and examined it. It looked different and had the same logo as their tees. Taking this as an opportunity, Nandu rushed after the five.
"Hey, listen , wait... " but they continued walking. Nandu ran to them and stopped when she reached them. "Hello, listen, I am talking to you" she called out. No response. After a while, The guy without the guitar stopped and turned.
"Now now who is this behenji? Listen, lady , we don't have time for this now. We only meet fans at the allotted time . So u want autograph, come when we are in the mood. Now bye. Don't disturb again." Saying he resumed walking with others who never bothered to turn back even once. " what the" this was Nandu's expression. Ok then. So be it. This striker remains with me. Such rudeness .. Nandu never in her lifetime experienced such attitude from people. She was slightly shaken by the whole experience. As she walked back the way she came, she was suddenly reminded of the fortune card. Is this striker the fortune card talking about. Will this show her future for her? Who among the boys does it belong to? The short one or the tall one, will she ever see them again?
And are these people as famous as the boy implied?
The picture of the five did not go from her mind as she looked around everywhere for chacha- chachi and Rishu who seems to have disappeared.

Part 4 - A bus journey, unexpected

As a child, Nandini always fought with Rishu for the window seat in bus. But today she sacrificed the seat, mainly because she was not in a mental state to do anything else. So overcome was she with grief that Chachi took a long time to pacify the inconsolable chacha and Nandu. The former on the loss of so much money and the latter on the guilt that it was all her fault. Of course, it was Nandu's fault because when Chacha-chachi realized that Nandu was not with them at the Airport, they naturally concluded that she must have gone out of the Airport to Amms and so they were searching for her on the outside premises while Nandu was searching for them inside. And by the time they saw each other, the counter and the gates had closed.

So that is why they are now sitting on a bus bound to Mumbai. When the bus entered highway and took up speed Nandu's thoughts went to the events of the day. Everything happened because of that one fall and anger started creeping within her for the guy who was responsible for the mishap. One of the two with the guitars and she was now in possession of his striker. Somehow, she did not feel like throwing it away , may be the influence of the fortune card.
How she wished she could give him a piece of her mind. Accidents do happen and she was not angry about it . She was pissed off by his attitude. Amms had induced high values within her and it was unacceptable for Nandu to digest such rude behavior. If it was her, she would have stopped and confirmed that the person is alright and do everything within her limits to make sure it is so.
Nandu saw chacha-chachi and Rishu nodding off to sleep. Nandu's emotions were too messed up to sleep. Music was her passion and if not for music, she would never have considered joining SPACE . To be away from Mangalore, a place she is familiar with is bad , but to be away from Amms and all her friends back home is worse. Mumbai is a big city and what would be the place there for a very traditional girl like Nandu. And not to mention a college like SPACE where all the elite's and rich join. Nandu would not have afforded it if not for the scholarship. How is she going to get through 5 years? Aiyappa !!
Will she be able to make any friends? And what about Rishu? Will he be able to cope to Mumbai life?
They arrived in Mumbai early morning and the travel to chacha's house was uneventful. Chacha's home was a two storeyed house in a housing colony surrounded by a small garden. Chachi had arranged a room exclusively for her and Nandu soon settled in. Later, after breakfast and a long bath, Nandu settled in for a nap, but slept for the remaining of the day. A call from Amms was what woke Nandu up hours later. Feeling fresh and happy after the long chat with Amms, Nandu joined Chachi to prepare dinner. Chacha had to leave for office the next day and therefore after the dinner, everyone retired to their own rooms.

Part 5 Introducing- the Malhotra's

Malhotra mansion, Mumbai

Mrs Nyonika Malhotra's day usually starts from the breakfast table. Her PA arrives promptly at the breakfast table at 7 everyday to brief Madam M, as she is called widely. And within the half an hour allotted for breakfast and briefing, Mrs M does half a days work. A perfectionist and cunning lady, she was feared by her staff, hated by her husband and despised by her son.

Mr. Manish Malhotra , Nyonika's husband , is the chairman of Malhotra group of companies. He is based in Pune and is running the companies from its headquarters in Pune. A few years back, Malhotra group had bought the SPACE - School of Pioneer Architecture & Civil Engineering, from its then owners and now it is been run by Nyonika.

Their marriage was a usual filmy one where a rich old man get hooked by an ambitious young beautiful woman and after few years , get tired of each other. By this time, Nyonika had given birth to their only son , the Manik Malhotra. Their early lives was in Dehradun where Manik went to Warriors High School. But after a few years, Nyonika got tired of her rather dull lifestyle of Dehradun and appealed to her husband to move to a city. Manish succumbed to her wishes and relocated to Pune where he started his businesses. Manik did not want to leave Warriors High. Therefore, was left back to be looked after by Manish's estate manager and his wife.

On acquiring SPACE, Nyonika took the opportunity to move to Mumbai. By this time, Manish's had also seen Nyonika's true colors. So he allowed her to relocate to Mumbai while he stayed back in Pune. Over the years, Manik became the only link between the two. After completing school, Manik joined SPACE , and joined his mother in Mumbai. Manik was not very attached to Nyonika. Something had happened that turned him 360 degree against her and he doesn't even address her as Mom. Nyonika too started using Manik for her purposes, to get to his father through him. Nyonika did not have much financial freedom in Malhotra group and so she had to please both Manik and his father to continue enjoying this power and status. The relationship between Nyonika and Manik was that of give and take where both use each other to serve their purposes.

" where is Manik? Is he back from Mangalore?" Nyonika asked her butler who was serving her coffee.

" baba is sleeping. Reached late yesterday. Madam"

" ok. Tell him to meet me in SPACE as soon as possible"
Nyonika instructed as she left for her office.

Manik was woken up by a message notification on wattsapp. It was from Aliya, his convenient girlfriend. They had been dating for 7 years now but the relationship was more of a habit now than of need. Both of them were so used to each other that they were just dragging on with the relationship , although both knew that it was not reaching anywhere. Aliya was enjoying the power it gave her to be referred to as the girlfriend of The Manik Malhotra and Manik was too much caring of her to break the relationship and was playing along with her.

The message was a reminder from Aliya regarding the party that she had arranged for the night. It seems today was another of their anniversary and of course Manik had no clue of it.

Aliya remembered and celebrated every single occasion of their life.they had anniversary for first touch, first smile and of course first kiss. But in reality, Aliya was too fond of partying and took any excuse to arrange one for all her friends.

As Manik freshened up and reached breakfast room, he was informed about Nyonika's instructions. Manik ignored it as usual and went out to be with his best buddy Dhruv Vedant.

Part 6 - His best buddy

The Vedant's lived just across the street. Manik was more at home in Vedant house than he was at his own house. Mr. Rishi Vedant was the manager of Malhotra estates at Dehradun. He was also the right hand of Mr. Manish Malhotra.Manish trusted Rishi more than anyone else. Manik was brought up by Mrs. Devyani Vedant while he was doing schooling in Dehradun after the Malhotra's moved to Pune. After the dear man died due to heart attack a few years back, Manish moved the family to Mumbai and took full responsibilities of them. Manik was the happiest on this development. Manik and Dhruv were childhood buddies and inseparable. Their bond was of the rare species where one knew the other inside out. The most surprising fact of their friendship was that they were so different from each other and music was the only common link between the two. Yet their friendship was the most enviable among their common friends. It was so pure and everyone knew that Manik would die for Dhruv if required and Dhruv was the only one who could deal with Manik's temper tantrums. Both the friends had a common love and that was the ladli of the Vedant's, Miss Soha Vedant, Dhruv's sister. She had just completed her 12th grade and would be joining SPACE soon. She has had a crush on Manik even before reaching adolescent. Manik is aware of it but has chosen to ignore it as he considers her as his little sister. He is just waiting for her to grow out of it.

Manik hit the kitchen directly on entering Vedant house looking for Mrs Devyani whom he lovingly referred to as Badi maa . As usual, she was in one of her cooking mission. She is a very homely lady , the epitome of kindness and goodness, everything he wished for in a mother and never found in Nyonika . Manik involuntarily searches for his badimaa on every girl he meets and none of them have so far reached that standard , not even Soha.

"Aao beta, I was preparing kheer and thinking of you only. You are up early. Dhruv is still sleeping. How was your Mangalore trip? How did the audition go?"

" badimaa, the audition went fine. And we are sure we will be selected. Then there will be other rounds to find out which is the best band of India. And we will have to go through many stages. Anyways , if we have your blessings, then I am sure we will be the winners"

" my blessings are always with you, you know that. But, remember you are in your 3rd year. Don't let this stop you from achieving your dream of being an architect. "

" music is my passion badimaa. But being an architect had been my ambition for so long. You know that I want to head the Malhotra designers & builders one day"

" Arrey, what are you saying? If your Dad bought an Engineering college just because his son wanted to learn architecture, how difficult will this be for him?"

"No badimaa, I wanted to do this myself.. Not with Dad's money or influence."

" I am proud of you beta. Jeete raho. Here , have this kheer"

As Manik was enjoying the kheer, Soha entered the kitchen. She had just got up from her sleep. On seeing Manik, Soha got charged up and rushed over to his side.
"Manik Manik.. Come with me" when Manik hesitated , she caught his hand and pulled.

"Just come " she dragged him from there to the living room. Once they reached the living room, Manik managed to release her hold.

" relax Soha. Tell me what is it"

It was visible in her face that something was bothering her.

" my application to SPACE has been rejected "
" what. By whom? Why?"

" who else. Nyonika maam rejected it and I got rejection email yesterday. I was waiting for you to come back. "

" but I personally submitted your application and had a talk with Nyonika as well"

" obviously that wasn't enough. Mom says its for the good. She wants me to join regular college and do degree. Manik, you will do something na.. I know you will"

" I need to see Nyonika ASAP. See you later. Bye. Just inform badimaa and Dhruv that I left". Angrily, he rushed out and headed to SPACE.

Soha watched him leave and thought" I want to be with you always, Manik. Hence, SPACE... I want you with me always.. And Once I am in, I will make sure that Alya stays out of your life".
