Part 7 - His own SPACE

SPACE was his second home. Don't ask me which is his first. Because he is still searching- for his home, his soulmate.

Manik Malhotra was the most talked about, sought after and awed person in SPACE. Not just because he was the son of the chairman , but because the whole package that was Manik Malhotra was precious and rare. He had a physique which went beyond handsome. It was beautiful in a very manly way. His height always made him stand out in a crowd. His style was unique and the never ending talk of the college . His attitude was a don't care one to strangers, warm to acquaintances , protective to his friends and vicious to enemies or to whoever tries to cross his path. And what would be his attitude to a lover is yet to be seen as he had never experienced a passionate sort of love until now, not even to Aliya. Girls always threw themselves at him and would die for any sort of gesture from him and many a cat fights were common in SPACE over his name especially in the ladies washroom and the hostel. The boys looked at him with envy , but never strived to be like him because they knew it was useless to try.
The only person in SPACE who actually dared to defy him was Nyonika. In fact she got a deep satisfaction in doing so and never let an opportunity slip. Provoking Manik gave Nyonika an upper hand on her husband as she is aware of how much Manish loved Manik. She enjoyed a deep psychological delight to see Manik upset or irritated. That is Nyonika for you, an insult to all other mothers in the world.

As expected Nyonika was in her office going through some papers when Manik barged in.

" Nyonika, how dare you reject Soha's application. You know very well that I am personally involved in this and yet you decided to reject it. How dare you"

" Good morning Manik, How are you and if I remember correctly, I had instructed the butler to ask you to meet me sooner than this. What took you do long? "

" I don't care. I don't care ki u wanted to see me. "

"Of course , I know that , my darling son , but the very issue that I wanted to discuss with you is the matter that has upset you.. About Soha. I know it's your Dad's wish that she join SPACE . Although I don't understand why both of you are giving that family this much importance "

" forget it Nyonika, u won't understand . Please come to the point. Waise Bhi, I don't have much time to waste here."

"Neither do I. So, Soha's entrance results were just average. I still would have considered her application if not for the full scholarships that your Dad insists on giving every year. Do you even know, how much we loose every year because of these scholarship students "

" Do you think I care"

"No. But this year you will care because Soha is not getting an admission if either of the two scholarship students does not back out. And it's up to you now. I don't have to tell you what to do to make the two girls flee from SPACE. One, Nandini Murthy from Mangalore and Navya Naveli from Patna. Both are very intelligent ones, scored high marks for board as well as entrance , managed scholarship based on their talent to sing and sports respectively. You and your gang can take them into your hands and show them a taste of SPACE."

" no ways, you can find some other alternative to bring Soha in. Perhaps, Reject an application from whom you accepted high donation? " Manik asked his usual sarcastic manner. " Anyways, I don't want to go against a practice started by Dad. "

" Exactly Manik, I don't want to go against my policies as well. So now the ball is in your court. You can do as you wish " saying Nyonika went back to her laptop and looked up only when she heard Manik bang the door shut.

" I know that you will do anything for Dhruv and this is one thing that I want you to do , Manik. Hence rejected Soha's application. "

A satisfied smile broke up on Nyonika's face.

Part 8 - Manik's FAB 5




FABULOUS 5 or FAB 5 for short.
The world views FAB 5 as Manik's. His gang and his band.

The most popular gang and famous music band of SPACE - Mr. Manik Malhotra being the undisputed leader , Cabir Dhawan, his partner in crime, the one with whom Manik's naughty side gets exposed.

Mukti Vardhan , the tomboy and the most disturbed among the lot , with whom Manik shared deep connection.

Dhruv Vedant, the silent one and Manik's childhood buddy.

Last but not the least , Aliya Saxena, the beauty queen and Manik's girl friend.

But, It is altogether another matter that Manik views FAB 5 as his world.

His yaariaan, his family, his strength and weakness. All five of them, thick as thieves- a force by itself.

Everyone in SPACE knew that it was unhealthy to mess with FAB 5 and they kept their distances. Guys who got attracted to Mukti buried it within themselves. They didn't dare to even look at Aliya. It was even considered dangerous to stray into Cabir's territory. Dhruv was a no-no, not to be messed with at all because of his protector Manik.

And those unfortunate ones who had been targets of the FAB 5's wrath shudders to even think about it. Very few among them survived the mental torture. It is not wise to even discuss here about how the FAB 5 treated their adversaries. Shahid of 2nd year was one such example. Any new comer who joins SPACE gets to hear his story quoted as an example and it goes like this.

Shahid was targeted by his seniors during the first year and as part of ragging was asked to act as if proposing to Mukti. He was assured it would be harmless and would not be going beyond the walls of the men's hostel. But one of his friends recorded it, obviously to threaten him, and to play a prank on him. His friend did not have any intention to make it public. Somehow, the whole recording reached FAB 5 and that's how Shahid became Mukti's spot boy. FAB 5 gave him an ultimatum to either be Mukti's spot boy or be dealt with by all 5 of them. And the poor boy chose the former. But that wasn't the end of it. FAB 5 recorded videos of Shahid doing all sort of lowly work for Mukti from cleaning her shoes to being her personal waiter, cook , butler etc. and posted it all in their Youtube channel.

If there is anything the FAB 5 is really serious about then it's music. All of them are passionate about music and the whole college is mad about their music and the amateur albums they upload in their channel.

In short, FAB 5 is all about 3 M's - Manik, music and maha friendship.

The FAB 5 have now come together in Aliya's house for the party and they are having a great time. Aliya's from a NRI business family based in London. Both Aliya and her brother Harshad are staying in a big mansion in Mumbai by themselves and therefore the Saxena's home are the main hangout point for the FAB 5.

"Aliya, waise where is our dear Harshad? Didn't get to see him here" Cabir asked as he helped himself to another can of beer.

" bhai is out of town guys. So thought why don't we utilise this opportunity and parttyy. I know how much u people get irritated with him around" said Aliya with her signature naughty sweet smile.

" ha an, how nice if out of town hi rahega tho..." said Manik under his breath.

" Babbyy, did you say something?" Aliya moved a little closer to him on the couch.

" no actually I was saying how smart of you Aliya to organize this party. You are" a pause" intelligent". Manik never liked Harshad. Harshad was one of the sworn enemies of the FAB 5.

" Aliya, u had as well sit on Manik's lap. U will be if you move any closer" Cabir said in his usual teasing manner.

" ohh. How sweet. Guys , I think we should leave these two lovebirds alone" Mukti, was one shipper who was absolutely in love with their pairing.

Dhruv was the only silent one. But he was enjoying this convo between his friends. Manik turned to him and Dhruv passed him a silent suppressed all knowing smile.

" Dhruv , I need to have a word with you buddy.. about Soha's admission." And turning to others, Manik said" u guys continue.. We will be around"

" arrey, what about her admission. Everything okay. Na? " Mukti asked.

" no in fact, she was not accepted in the college" Dhruv clarified to the others.

" I had a talk with Nyonika this morning and it's because she was forced to give admission to two scholarship students that Soha's admission was rejected. But you guys don't worry. I will deal with it my way."

" okay so, what do we have to do? Throw out the scholarship bachas. ..Nyonika must have suggested that. Hai Na, Manik? " Cabir was the perceptive one of the lot.

" bachis. 2 girls. "

" So what are we waiting for? Let's indulge Nyonika for a change. I am thirsty for some fresh blood." Cabir showed a vampire face and Mukti rubbed her hands together.

" yes Cabir, I am dying for some fresh action. Let's do it guys.."

The other three did not share their excitement as all of them had their own reasons. Dhruv was thinking about his sister who was not very good with science and maths subjects. She would do well in other subjects. He and his mother knew that, but was clueless on why Soha was insisting on joining SPACE. Aliya was never comfortable with the freedom that Soha enjoyed with Manik and her girls intuition was telling her that something is not right. Manik, on the other hand did not want to give in to Nyonika's whims as he knew that she was deliberately using him.

But no one protested on Cabir's idea and it was decided that they would target the new arrivals and send at least one of them packing. Cabir, the master planner got to work on the plan immediately...

So unknowingly to them, a stage was set on that day for Manan journey.

Part 9 - Patna Express in Mumbai

Navya Naveli hailed from a small town in Patna, but this never hindered her from dreaming high. She was a very bubbly girl, talkative and expressive or let us say dramatic. The only daughter of a small shopkeeper, she was brought up to be strong and independent and often helped her father in his shop in addition to taking tuitions for children. Her life would have been like any other girl of her village had it not been for her father who recognized her intelligence and encouraged her to study.
When she was accepted in SPACE as a scholarship student, the joy of father-daughter duo knew no bounds. Her mother was a bit apprehensive about her only daughter having to move to the big world of Mumbai.

So that was how Patna express landed in Mumbai one fine day bringing with her lots and lots of dreams , drama and determination to never give up.

Her father accompanied her and admitted her in the hostel and left for Patna soon after leaving our drama queen to face the world by herself. Navya understood that something was really wrong as soon she landed in the hostel. Every other girl was giving her weird looks. At first she ignored it thinking that as a new comer she was being treated differently. She never equated this behavior to her dressing style. She had stitched some new and expensive Salwar kameez . She liked bright colors and heavy jewelry, but she had now limited her jewelry to a few bangles and an earring and she always plaited her hair on two sides. Navya noticed that all the girls were like models that she had seen only in television or magazines, but being an overly friendly girl, she started her monologue with her roommate as sooon as she had settled down. The girl was clearly not impressed and just to shut Navya up, she plugged her earphone into her ears. It was then that Navya turned to her Deity for companionship. Her devimaa never got tired of listening to her ramblings. A deep feeling of loneliness engulfed Navya. How she missed her village, her parents and the little children there who were always ready to engage her in conversation. Will she be lucky to find someone here in Mumbai whom she can call as her friend.

And only the dream of being an architect some day retained her sanity especially during her initial days in SPACE when she was ridiculed, made fun of and targeted for being different.
