PRINCE ANGAD : THE SON OF BAALI After the abduction of Sita, Rama and Lakshmana reached Rishyamuka mountain. There, mediated by Hanuman, they made friends with Sugreev and killing Baali and they helped Sugreev to gain the Kishkindha kingdom. Leaving his body at the feet of Rama, Baali took his son Angad into his shelter.

Thus, Lord Rama embraced Angad affectionately. He then crowned Sugreev as Kishkindha's king and appointed Angad as the heir to the throne. Angad too gladly accepted the God's grace. When the simian troops reached the southern most tip, they came across the sea, which worried them. Angad knew that he could cross the sea in a single leap and return safely. But Jambhvant stopped him and sent Hanuman instead. Hanuman not only reached Lanka but caused a lot of destruction and returned with the good news of having met Sita also. Then with God's grace, a bridge was built over the sea and the army landed at Trikoot mountain in Lanka. Before launching an attack, Lord Rama decided to send Angad as an emissary to Ravana to avert the war. He said to Angad :" I know that you are intelligent and clever."
Since Hanuman had already made an attempt to coax Ravana, but in vain, so Shri Rama advised Angad to adopt different tactics. Angad did the same in the court. He knew that Ravana was naughty, could not be moved by temptations etc. He thought that Ravana could only be persuaded by fear etc, Or by breaking his courage and frightening his followers could avert he war. Thus with full faith, Angad announced his resolution in Ravana's court.

Such a resolution shows Angad's unshakable faith in Shri Rama's might. Ravana was also a great politician, so he tried to be a friend of Angad by saying :"Baali, your father was my friend. Rama and Lakshmana are the killers of your father. It is extremely shameful for a person like you to assist the killers of your father".
Hearing the criticism of Shri Rama from Ravana, Angad got so infuriated, he then hit the floor with his fist due to which Ravana's palace trembled and Ravana could hardly keep his balance and his crown fell on the floor and 4 beads from the crown broke, which Angad picked up and threw it towards Lord Rama. Thus Angad returned to Lord Rama. Lord Rama asked Angad :"How did you manage to snatch the beads from Ravana who is the conquerer of the 3 worlds? He replied humbly :"O Lord, you know everything. These are not mere beads, but these are 4 virtues of the king. O Lord, Vedas say that Sama(treating all the subjects alike and equally), Dama (temptation), Danda(punishment) and Bheda(division) are the four virtues of a king. O lord, the religious policy only adorns you well, so I brought these 4 beads to your refuge."
This was followed by a fierce battle between Rama and Ravana. Ultimately Ravana was killed by Rama. Bravery of Angad in the battle is beyond description. After conquering Lanka, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya. There he was crowned the king. Having treated the guests well, they were then seen off by Lord. Anticipating his turn, Angad sank stealthily in a corner while his anxiety was mounting continuously - lest he should be parted with God. When all the simian troops and leaders received their gifts and they stood to leave by the order of the Lord, only then his attention turned to Angad. Now Angad began to shiver with tears flowing from his eyes. With folded hands he said :"O Lord, at the time of his death, my father had put me at your feet. So please do not desert me. Allow me to stay at your feet ." Uttering these words, Angad fell at Lord Rama's feet. Lord Rama raised Angad and embraced him. The Lord then gave Angad his personal clothes, garlands etc. and began to escort him. Angad bowed before the Lord repeatedly and saw his lotus like face and thought that now perhaps God may allow him to stay with him."
Thus God himself escorted Angad. Years later, Hanuman sought Sugreev's permission to return to the service of Lord Shri Rama. Angad then said to him :" O Hanumanji; you repeatedly say my greetings to Shri Rama and remind him about me." |
