While most actors would bask in the glory of a 1000 episodes-run of their show, Kiran Karmarkar felt suffocated and quit 'Kahanii Ghar Ghar Ki'. "Om in 'Kahani…' established me as an actor, gave me fame and money but I couldn't go on any further.
After a point, it was killing me as an actor," confesses Kiran.
He continues, "That's when I asked Balaji to relieve me. But I marvel at Saakshi's (Tanwar) grit and determination with which she is still performing as Parvati. I don't think a good actor gets killed doing dailies. But I could not carry on." Kiran took a sabbatical from television to go back to his first love - theatre.
But he is now back on TV though he insists, "I will only do cameos in episodic shows. Even if I do a daily I will play a small but pivotal character." Kiran states candidly that he wants to get out of the rut of "just counting the money you earn per day."
Karmarkar recently did a cameo in 'Darna Mana Hai' and is now playing a tycoon in 'Saarrthi'.
"But no more shooting 20 days a month for one single show for me," says a firm Kiran. However, he defends the sanitized goodness depicted in saas bahu soaps, "I have seen similar situations in every middle-class family I know."
Unlike the placid Om, the actor is short-tempered. He feels annoyed when film producers "pretend they don't know" of his existence. He explains, "They feel that TV actors are too busy and would have greater date hassles as they shoot everyday."
But luck has been kind to Kiran and he has already signed two Marathi films. Karmarkar is game for Hindi films and cites Gulzar as his "all-time favourite director." Kiran ends on an honest note, "Eighty percent of my acting career has been with Balaji. I would love to work with them again!"
