B inaifer Sanjay and Kohli's production house, Edit II, is busy canning episodes of their soon-to-be pre- miered daily show Four (SAB). Concept Imtiaz Punjabi, head of opera- tions Edit II, says, "The show is set in Panchgani, fictitiously named Palankhet. It's a small town in which four young friends venture out with impossible dreams." He adds, "The story deals with problems of the generation gap. It will have many songs. One among the four friends is a singer." The show is slated for the 8.30 pm slot. The theme revolves around friendship. It's about camaraderie and no one actor is portrayed as the lead protagonist. Who's in it? Manasi Parekh, Vipul Gupta, Raj Singh Arora and Samir Sharma will play the four friends. Parekh and Gupta were the lead pair of India Calling. Parekh says, "I play a tomboy- ish character Taranpreet Nagra. She's a very confused and spaced out girl with a live and let live atitude." "I'm like Chandni of India Call- ing, responsible and committed. The roles Gupta as Rakesh Sharma (Rocky) plays the educated small-town guy. His ambition is to become a rock- star. He says, "He's very much like today's youth, not exactly rebel- lious, yet wanting to have his own way. An intense and subtle guy, I can relate to him." Arora aka Yuvi of Remix and Ashutosh Mehra of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki fame will play Rat- tan Mahajan (Rattu). He's the daredevil biker, risk-taker and automobile freak, a total brat. He panders to vices like smoking and betting and is the most notorious boy in the gang. According to Arora, "The only similarity between Rattu and me is that I used to love bikes five years ago. I have spent three years in a small town and my observa- tions have helped me to connect with the role." Sharma of Dil Kya Chahata Hai was recently spotted as Navin Singh in Left Right Left (SAB). He is upbeat about his character Mannat Chauhan (Mannu). He says, "Mannu is rich, carefree and laidback. Like every youngster, he's confused. He's the do-gooder with no goals in life." Saying that the character is close to his personality, he adds, "Only, I'm not completely laid back. With the progress of the story, my character will see a drastic change."

Dil Chaahta hai 'Four'.

Remember Dil Chaahta Hai and you will be able to connect to Binaifer Kohli's Four on SAB TV. Four represents four directions, the journey of four friends and the paths they take. It's a daily in the 8.30-9 pm slot.

Imtiaz Punjabi, HO of Edit II, informs, "It's the story of four youngsters from a small town out to realize their dreams. We have included elements that interest today's youth like motorbike racing and a pop star aspirant."

Even the unambitious youth can identify for there are characters that are lazy and without any goal.

The friendly four are Vipul Gupta, Raj Singh Arora, Samir Sharma and Manasi Parekh. After India Calling on Star One, Vipul and Manasi are paired together again and they are quite thrilled about it. Other actors include Shagufta Ali, Anang Desai, Suhasini Mulay, Dolly Minaz, Neelu Kohli and Suresh Chatwal.

Vipul Gupta plays Rocky the guy with stars in his eyes as he comes to the city to pursue his ambition to become a rockstar. Speaking on the character, he says, "It's an antithesis to what I was in India Calling there I was a cool dude, rich and sophisticated whereas here I am a vernie struggling to make it big. I take that as a challenge."

Yuvi of Remix fame, Raj Singh Arora is Rattu, the bike racing fanatic. He is the boy who indulges in all the bad habits of smoking and betting. Highly ambitious, he takes the wrong path to achieve the ends. He starts with a small motor driving school and becomes big enough to own a car showroom. "I have spent a couple of years in Jammu and noticed the mentality of small town people. I was scared of playing Rttu but my director convinced me to do so. That helped in essaying this role."

The ghost Navin Singh of Left Right Left emerges again on SAB as Mannu a vain, good-looking, health-freak who wants to be a singer. Mannu is very busy but with attending other's marriages and funerals. He envies Rocky as he can see through Mannu's dark side.

On her role, Manasi Parekh says, "I am the only girl among three boys. My name is Taranpreet Nagra, fondly called TP, who is a freaky person. My aim in life keeps changing everyday since I am confused and don't know where I am heading towards." But she ends up doing what she hated all her life as a chef though she detests cooking. Does she identify with TP? "No, I am in direct contrast to TP in my real life," says Manasi who feels she is closer to Chandni of India Calling.

Mita's lipstick is a hit!
By: Tushar Joshi
April 21, 2007

Female fans from Dubai and Pakistan routinely call the Kahaani actress about her rouge pout

Painting the town red:Mita Vashisht
She's definitely one of a kind. Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii's Trishna, played by firebrand actress Mita Vashisht, stands out as the only vamp on small screen with a rather funny bone.

Apart from her scheming character, the audience is also enamoured with Trishna's trademark red lipstick.

So much so, that she is routinely hounded by calls from fans wanting to know where she's got that shade!

Call frenzy

However, Mita reveals that convincing Balaji boss Ekta Kapoor about the flaming red lipstick wasn't easy. "After the generation leap, Ekta wanted to make Trishna very flamboyant.

I came up with the idea of going all out and wearing red lipstick. However, Ekta wasn't very excited about the idea, as she wasn't sure I would look good in such a bright colour. I asked her to let me wear it for a few episodes and see what the response would be like," says Mita.

To Mita's surprise, people not only took to her new avatar with a vengeance, but she was also flooded with calls about the lipstick.

"I don't think any character on television today is sporting bright red lipstick! I started getting calls from women not just in India but abroad as well. They wanted to know which brand of lipstick I was wearing and what was the exact name of the shade."

Kiddie fans

About her prospects on the show, Mita says she will be part of Kahaani as long as she has something substantial to do. "I wouldn't want the character to become a caricature.

At the moment, Trishna is on a high and people are really enjoying her craziness. Also, surprisingly, kids are the biggest fans of Trishna dadi.

Recently, Mita was taken aback when a Pakistani reporter called her to talk about her character. "I didn't realise Trishna dadi would be such a hit. It definitely felt nice," concludes Mita.

Red alert

For all those of you dying to know which shade Mita favours, it's actually not one but three hues of red.

Vashisht alternates between Red by MAC, Dark Red by Nina Ricci and Shisheido.

There is nothing slimey about Kahani's Batuk Nath in real life. Unlike his lecherous paan chewing character, Mahesh Yadav is cool. Apart from doing theater he also has 80 print ads to his credit. And the most interesting bit about him is that he is engaged to co-star Shalini (Maithali) and they are in a live-in-relationship. His professional life too is rocking as Mahesh says, "I have got very a encouraging response from two TV production companies. Mine's an interesting character, a combination of grey and comedy, something like what Paresh Rawal does," says the actor who wants to try his luck in films.

'There's no man in my life for next three years'

That's the status of Balaji czarina Ekta Kapoor's personal sphere

By: Subhash K Jha
taking a chill pill: Ekta Kapoor

With Sameer Nair taking his 'Star' appeal to NDTV's new entertainment channel— Imagine, many from the Star TV's creative team are also being carried forward to the new place of work.
Star power
But what plans does Balaji honcho Ekta Kapoor have? "My relationship with Star is very strong. However, my rapport with them is purely that of a content provider. I work on a few basic pre-conditions. My work has to get its creative freedom and my software has to be rewarded well in terms of pay and audience. If Star continues to fulfil these preconditions I'll definitely continue to work with them. As for the other channels, including NDTV, I'm definitely open to working with them. Anyway, I won't be cutting down on content for Star. I'll just be working more to give software to the other channels."
Does that mean more working hours? Laughs Ekta, "You'll be surprised but I've started going out with my friends almost every night. Recently, I reunited with my old school friends. After years, they're back in my life. Some of them are mothers, others are just married, or about to getting married. My best friend from school Shweta got married this January. And two of my closest friends Shabina Khan and Neelam are back at the centre of my life. Earlier we couldn't meet very often but of late, we've become an inseparable threesome. I love going out to dinner with all my friends at least once in a month and then enjoy getting back to work."
Kahin to hoga?
Does that mean it is time for her to get settled? "All my astrologers say there's no man for me in the next three years. When it has to happen, it will happen," signs off Kapoor.

Temptation island

Veteran actor Roopa Ganguly has also succumbed to the Balaji lure, tempted probably by big bucks and bigger exposure, into a wasted role that will have her doing little more than gazing adoringly at her daughter and casting frightened looks at the daughter's prospective in laws. Mita Vashisht, known for her strong performances in films, too has been reduced to playing a caricature in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. Is it the dearth of really good roles on TV that pushes good actors to such roles?

Possibly. But the actors on Viruddh seem to be enjoying themselves immensely, toying with the strong dialogue and the emoting opportunities the script allows. It's pure pleasure watching the interactions of Vikram Gokhale, Govind Namdeo and Sushant Singh as they play out their professional and domestic political games with each other. Or is the sharp contrast the serial offers to insipid fare elsewhere that makes it stand out so bright?

One positive fallout of the World Cup getting over is that Sab can return to its usual programming mix. Left Right Left should be back (and Tony and Deeya Singh should preferably concentrate their energies on this one, rather than on Jeete Hain...on sister Sony) as also Mohalla Mohabbatwala. And if the promos are anything to go by, Anurag Basu's forthcoming show, Love Story, sounds like it's going to be worth sitting through. For the variety and quality of programming it continues to struggle to put together, I would still lay my bets on Sab.

The others continue to find the formula the safest (battered housewives continue to tell their fathers that 'a husband's house is the paradise for any woman', as one did in Zee's Betiyann recently). Kasamh Se and Jeete Hain's protagonists are threatening to go into revenge mode, wanting to extract justice for all the wrongs done to them in their marital home. Don't worry though, neither is likely to forsake husband, hearth or home to stand up for her rights. Even a Parvati gets all teary eyed when she returns to the Agarwal household every time, anyway.

I want to go home!

The latest from the Balaji Brigade to call it quits is Tina Parakh. Rumour mills have been rolling out the news of her frustration for a while now! Apparently the actress essaying a prime character Shruti (Parvati's daughter) in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Mukti (Prem's love interest) Kasautii Zindagi Kay is said to be irked with Balaji.

It comes as a dj vu as the actress was wary about her role and generation leap since best friend Manoj Bohra put his foot down. However we did heard of a concrete decision taken over the issue. Now the news is that she is miffed as her work life is affecting her personal life. The actress doesn't get enough time for recreation and apparently hasn't been able to spend quality time with friends and family. Being a part for the daily soap brigade, there is no bank of episodes, the daily pressure is too much to combat with especially as she recently got married.

Quoting a source, "She is considering quitting the show as she isn't getting enough time for her personal life. She cribs about the fact that she spends all day here and is too tired to do anything at the end of it. Apart from that she hasn't really enjoyed her martial bliss. I don't think her family is taking it too well either."

Hope Tina doesn't go the Tulsi way and sort out the matter with Balaji.
