Bored Tina will exit Kahaani...

Tina Parekh (Shruti Kaul in Kahanii Ghar Ghar Ki) will leave the serial in a few days' time, she says."I am bored," says Tina, "and I'm leaving the show because for four years I've been busy only with Kahani. For a while, I did the role of Mukti in Kasauti for a change of pace but even that ended suddenly."

Now she is poised to leave Kahaani, also in dramatic fashion. "I want to die in the serial," she says. Tina doesn't know how her end is to be scripted, and the writers of the serial are unwilling to let her go because of her popularity. She plays a critical role, being Parvati's daughter. Her role's climax came last week when she was 'shot dead' by her mother to Trishna's joy, but rose after it was revealed that the shooting was just a set-up meant to send Trishna to jail.

Balaji was circumspect about her exit: "Shruti will not die early and as we have still to write the script, she may not die at all. It's not been decided and we don't want her to leave the serial," a source said.

A hint of her exit was scripted into the serial in Tuesday's show, when Trishna came up with the stunning revelation that Pranay was not Shruti's son. This is likely to lead to her breaking down and then exiting, it is believed.

Tina said her time with the serial was memorable for her and her fame had come entirely because of her portrayal of Shruti.

We asked her what her top 3 moments on the show were and she said:

1: "I liked all my scenes with Parvati, and she's my favourite co-star"
2: "When my father Om Agarwal slapped me after learning of my links
with Aryan Doshi"
3: "When I broke down completely in front of Janki Devi"

Pranay of Kahani turns negative

Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii will see the character of Pranay played by Jeetu Malkani turning negative. We spoke to Jeetu to know more.

"Pranay will be turning negative because of the circumstances in which he comes to know that his mom had cheated him and his father. So he is very angry with his mom, Sonu massi, and Parvati nani (grandmother), as they knew the truth. Now, he will show them when someone close hurts you how it feels. Pranay will also backstab them."

"In this process of his hatred, he will not pay attention to his wife whom he has just married and there will be hatred within the family."

In the serial, Trishna (Mita Vashisht) has been sent to jail for the murder of Om Agrawal and the Aggrawal house got their bahu back.

The house was fully decorated as Pranay (Parvati's grandson) was getting married to their accountant's daughter Maithili but Trishna wanted take revenge of Parvati and Shruti. She revealed to Pranay, "You are the foster son of Shruti and your real mother is Sonu, who is Shruti's cousin sister and this was known to Parvati. This makes him wild as all these years his mom kept mum."

So, Pranay turning negative will be new Kaahani of the Aggarawals.

Ali Asgar and Kashif Khan win Comedy Circus!

The fabulous actor and 'Devar' Ali Asgar and his partner Kashif Khan win the Comedy Circus in grand style! Read to know more..

The first season of Comedy Circus (Sony) will soon announce its winner. According to reliable sources, Tellywood's favourite 'devar' Ali Asgar and Kashif Khan have been crowned the kings of guffaws. It seems they beat Swapnil Joshi and VIP by a very close margin of votes. Both Asgar and producer Vipul Shah refused to confirm the news.

The semi final, this week, will have Bollywood actress Preeti Jiangiani and comedian Surinder Sharma as the celebrity guests. And, the finale, to be aired on September 8, will have Shakti Kapoor, Tusshaar Kapoor, Kunal Khemu and Shivaji Satam as the celebrity guests.

A unique format of television stars paired with a stand-up comedian, Comedy Circus has managed to get good viewership and ratings for Sony. The channel has decided to continue to capture eyeballs after the finale by showing six extensions for the six weeks after the finale. It will end when Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa's second season will go on air. Sources confirm that these are mere extensions and not the second season of Comedy Circus.

There will be a change in format in these extension episodes. To start with, it will have the four finalists of the first season (Ali Asgar and Kashif Khan, Urvashi Dholakia and Shakeel Siddiqui, Swapnil Joshi and VIP, Karishma Tanna and Khayali) competing against each other. Every episode will have one new jodi.

Though Archana Puran Singh continues to be a judge, Satish Shah and Johnny Lever have opted out of the show. Shruti Sheth will continue to be the hostess and a celebrity judge is expected in every episode. These new episodes will only have performances by the jodis and will not be a contest.

Gurdeep Kohli I used to teach painting and drawing to little kids. On every Teacher's Day, my students would make cards for me. Even today, when my stu- dents bump into me, they acknowledge my work as an actress which is very touch- ing. And it's even more touching when they say that I am their role model. Delnaazz Paul I always thought that teachers had a thank- less job. But that turned out to be wrong. I taught history for a year and a half at Jai Hind College and it was a great experience. It's so good to know that students love you and tell you what you mean to them. Unfortunately, I could celebrate Teacher's Day only once. Anoop Soni I used to teach acting in Kishore Namit Kapoor's institute. Akshaye Khanna, Priya Gill, and Apurva Agnihotri have been my students. We never cel- ebrated Teacher's Day as such. But the kind of respect and admiration I got as a teacher was phenomenal. Even today, some of them call me Sir.

Pranay, the second generation lead character of Kahani, started on a positive note but turned negative against those people who had betrayed him. When he came to know the truth about why he was exchanged by his parents as a baby, he was so shocked that he went into a shell and cut off ties with everyone, including his wife Maithali. But it was Maithali, who with Adi's help, helped Pranay come of out his low phase. And just when he was about to be back to his normal self, Pranay has got embroiled in marital rape. "Pranay's marriage almost ended when he brought a mistress home. Also he never got along well with Adi and when he realised that Maithali is in love with Adit, Pranay rapes his wife.

I guess the marital rape issue has been brought in to show male chauvinism," says Jeetu Malkani, admitting that he was not comfortable doing the act. "I was quite confused and wasn't convinced that Pranay could do this kind of thing. But then I had to do it. May be the Big Boss (read Ekta) has something in mind about where the character is headed. Tracks keep changing every now and then because daily soaps are TRP-driven." Jeetu is quite happy about his debut show and the character. "From positive to anti-hero to negative I have got a good range and varied shades to portray," he adds. In fact, so loyal is he to Kahani and Balaji that he has turned down four non-Balaji projects. "I want to give my best to the show and do not want to disturb my routine and schedule by taking up another serial. I would like to be loyal to Balaji which has given me my first break," he says.

'I never plan anything in life'

Kiran Karmarkar on vanishing from TV every now and then!

CHITRA UNNITHAN

Television star Kiran Karmarkar became a household name overnight, thanks to Om (the character he played in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii for five long years). The actor who is busy doing a play with television actress Sangeeta Ghosh, is taking a break from television for the time being. "I am not doing any projects on television now. I am doing a play and travelling for the same. I am just waiting for a good role to come my way," he says.
Kiran started off his acting career on stage (doing Marathi plays), went on to become a regular face in print and TV commercials. After doing cameos in several television soaps, a major role in Ekta Kapoor's Ghar Ek Mandir became the turning point in his career. "I always wanted to be an actor. I believe in doing good work and will take up anything that will give me a chance to do better. I don't plan anything." Kiran, who has worked with the nation's favourite telly bahus Smriti Iraani (Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman) and with Saakshi Tanwar (Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki), has words of praise for both. "Both Smriti and Saakshi are extremely professional. While Saakshi is devoted to her work, Smriti is hardworking and focussed."
The actor met his wife Rinku while working in a soap where both played brother and sister. "We met on the sets and decided to get married." Being from the same profession, how do they manage hectic schedules and the travelling? "We always get to spend time with each other. When I work she does not work and when she works I don't work," he points out.
On TV Kiran has played many roles from that of a family person to an ambitious business tycoon. What is the real Kiran like? "I am a very ordinary person with emotions," he explains. After so many years in the industry, is there something called a dream role for him? "There is no such thing as a dream role. What's the point in doing something that somebody has already done?" he asks.

Dailies take over Weeklies

he first ever daily to be launched on Indian television was Shanti in 1993 on Doordarshan. Starring Mandira Bedi in the title role it was introduced as a daily afternoon soap and went on to complete five years on air, one of the longest running soaps then on TV. However, it was on STAR Plus that the first dailies Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii were introduced in the 10 and 10.30 pm slot respectively. Instant hits, the two succeeded in extending the primetime band of television which was hitherto considered between 8 - 10 pm.

The success of these two dailies propelled the channel to wipe out its weekly serials and replace them with dailies. 8.30 pm slot was also given to a daily Kasauti Zindagi Kay and since then the scenario on all entertainment channels is the same.

One daily soap that needs to be mentioned for bringing the underdog to the fore was Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. The story of a ugly duckling transforming into a swan, the soap struck a chord with the viewers who readily identified with the plain jane working middle-class Punjabi girl.

With dailies dominating primetime, weeklies have become a thing of the past. Weeklies, though, did see a bright spark with Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, a one hour weekly on STAR Plus which was a huge hit. Even Sanjivani managed to strike a chord with the viewers. However, channel found it difficult to sustain their popularity and weeklies were once again shown the door.

On the other hand, dailies got a boost and from four days a week they were extended to five days.

During this period channels started experimenting with weekend programming which was hitherto reserved for films and filmrelated events. Even today these kind of shows are relegated to weekends which are essentially lined up with serials that are tri-weekly. Though Sony had introduced the tri-weekly concept through Kya Hadsa Kya Haqeeqat, it was with Baa Bahoo Aur Baby on STAR Plus that the idea clicked big time and was followed up with two more tri-weeklies Sai Baba and Prithviraj Chauhan.Today the weekends are allotted to reality shows.
