This exactly. This is what irritates me as well. The scapegoating of the audience instead of accepting their own failings.

Working hard doesn’t automatically make you immune to criticism in a business that is based on audience feedback.

Either way, that doesn’t constitute actual success when the content has zero substance.

People watch masala Bollywood films for escapism too but the most they’ll do is try to mouth dialogues or ape the style of a character. They don’t get feels from friggin snakes and lizards in the guise of “entertainment”.

The argument is skewed. In scraping at the bottom line, ITV has deliberately decided to avoid even acknowledging how far they’ve lowered the collective IQ of the masses. Cuz hey, how does it matter as long as people watch asinine things for whatever reason. Eyeballs = Money. Btw even murders can get you eyeballs, so please go ahead and start live murdering people on TV cuz hey, if people watch it, that makes it “entertainment” justified so 👏.

Agreed👍🏼

The makers should be more in control of the stuff they're serving. And that, it is in some way affecting the minds of the people. People will see what's shown after all.

P.S My friends are some weirdos. Pretty sure they watch it for fun. I tease them on how they're somehow contributing to the numbers😆

P.P.S Live murdering show! That'll be fun🤣

Nagin was made because a track of ichadari nagin from sasural simar ka actually garnered high trps. It was aired on weekends where the show had virtually no competition. It was aggressively marketed, posters on railways and subways and buses, prime time ad spots, actors cross promoting on shows like kapil sharma and other high trp shows. Ads in newspapers and magazines, interviews and saas bahu segments. All directed first at the rural hindi belt. And lets be honest, those who enjoyed the show did not enjoy it for logic. And it came before jio. 🤷🏾‍♀️ So i guess this was a better alternative than dance shows or sooryavansham at whatever o clock on weekends.

And since this made money, ctrl c- ctrlv.

I feel many here are getting too hung up on the “these shows work” argument. What we aren’t discussing is HOW these shows are made to “work”.

What exists on paper is wafer thin in terms of content. It’s not even about logic or lack thereof. It’s about packaging...these shows are marketed aggressively and filled with titilating elements. Hence the lure for ppl who don’t want anything but outside packaging. Heck, these shows can’t even manage to find decent actors these days. Ek toh melodrama, upar se bad acting. Still there are takers for morbid curiosity about cheaply CGI-d naagins 😆. Is it really just about fascination with snakes? Lol nope.

When you have a lot of money at your disposal to hype things, you can skew things in many directions.

A Kapil Sharma Show still gives ppl laughs no matter how slapstick. What do these shows give? Zilch.

@bold: Exactly. This is one point I don’t know why keeps getting dismissed.

Shows aren’t just made cuz ppl watch them. What makers put in front of people to watch gets watched automatically many times. So how is that always a measure of interest from the audience? 🤔

Don’t worry, Ekta will manage to make a murdering show in the future as well and people will mindlessly Lap that up too in the name of “hey, ppl are watching it so it must be good” 😕😆

Thank you for this post. It's bang on. I was appalled at that analogy.

Even Chinese & Koreans come with many fantasy shows which actually make for a brilliant watch & not because people have blind adoration for those cultures. Once you say, it's a fantasy, people get in that mode but even fantasy should be restricted to that & not dwell in Saas-bahu, mahaanta drama. Fantasy has to be good to be watched & adored. Not all fantasy shows work. They need to have well structures story to work. Krishh & Koi mil gaya was all about fantasy suerhero & it worked brilliantly.

ITV makers twist every original folklore for some money with pathetic CGI & glorify & bash audience for ridiculing this stuff. The male lead here didn't even debate further. I know I would have done it to prove my point instead of adoring her mindless justifications. Besides, western shows don't have OTT drama of bahu performing surgery. They leave that stuff to doctors. They keep it simple & short. Here they don't want to experiment & those who experimented didn't work because channels have this step-motherly attitude towards these brilliant shows.

@Red: Yeah but there have been a lot decent shows in terms of logic that just don't garner the trps. Its not that they aren't promoted well.. its just that some of these others shows fascinate the audience more. I can't tell you the number of shows that I have been excited about but that get cancelled because of lack of audience. So I really can't blame the makers.. they can't pay for the staff to make a show if people won't watch.

I know of 10 shows on the top of my head that were simply brilliant but ended abruptly or cut down before completing the story because of their TRP game & audience who didn't watch this show. Add to it lack of promotion for these brilliant stories on main GEC channels who run into blind race. Only Sony manages to gain audience for their wonderful shows.

@bold Can relate Probably the bigger production houses have a lot of say in it. You trend it enough and you are the talk of the town.

Exactly.

Since these ppl love analogies, let’s use another one. Let’s talk plants.

Some plants need less water and sunlight, some need more. Some plants take more time to grow, some need less. So how exactly can both their fates be measured by the same yardstick?

Every show needs to be nurtured in different ways based on its core storyline. To presume within 3 weeks of launch that all shows should get the same level of ratings is a fundamental flaw here.

I can give a clear example of a lovely show called BBKD on Sony. It got the standard 2 weeks of initial promotion and because it didn’t get instantly high TRP, it was canceled within 3 months. On the other end we have an Ekta pouring money into erecting statues for a reboot show which garnered low TRPs for its initial months despite all the hype. Yet no one canceled that show. Money still keeps getting poured into it until some form of melodrama manages to break though and the show is suddenly labeled a huge “success”. Where would this so called success be if this show had been canceled based on the first two months of ratings? Yet this show was allowed to continue while a BBKD was axed. 🤷‍♀️

The powerful run this industry and manipulate the system as per their needs. The audience alone does not decide. The system decides who gets extra chances based on connections.

The Trp's for Sony shows are significantly lower.. but I guess somehow as a channel they make it work (not entirely sure how). But even on Sony there were a couple that I really liked but got cut short because of bad ratings so now I am kind of weary of starting Sony shows too.
