The scene starts w/ Sushma arriving at the spot where the Sharmas are, on being called by Brij, and dumbfounded on what to do. Brij tells her that these are the in-laws of the host, and therefore special guests of the host family (The Sharmas could have told her that since she works for them, there is nothing he's told her that she doesn't already know.) Therefore, she should be tending to their needs very closely. Sushma offers KK a drink from her tray, but he turns away in sorrow. CM remarks that Brij too is a guest, and if he is going to be servicing their guests, what will they do? Brij tells her that Pankaj is not just his friend, but like a bro to him (KK is stunned to hear that), and so he feels just at home here, and she too made him one of the guests? CM apologizes, and MN remarks on how Brij is full of sweet words. KK turns to Deepu, still at a loss for words. Brij laughs at the compliment, and KK glares at him, as does Padma & Deepu. Brij continues to smirk at them.
In another room, Minal is waiting, and CM joins her. Minal tells her that her FIL has still not arrived, and CM tells her that she is sure to. She takes her to join the other guests. Elsewhere, Brij is chatting w/ other guests. Then he leaves and walks up to the Sharmas again (he's such a sadist, but somehow, I doubt that he's a masochist as well). He wonders where their eldest daughter is, since he has a jugalbandi program w/ her. Deepu is about to lounge at him, but is stopped by Padma. Padma asks jugalbandi, and Brij, rubbing it in, tells them that he's supposed to sing, and she's supposed to dance. The Sharmas are shocked to hear this. There is supposed to be a big performance, so where is Jyoti? He asks them to tell her that he's looking for her, and then leaves to look for her.
Elsewhere, one of the guests calls Sushma, and tells her that her hands are empty, so to take care of the guests. Sushma gives her a drink. Jyoti looks at the scene horrified, and just then, Brij joins her. He tells Jyoti to get ready so that they can start the entertainment show and entertain the guests. CM comes and tells Jyoti to get ready fast, and Jyoti leaves.
Inside, Sudha is donning Jyoti her anklets, and Jyoti remarks on how these were once something she loved wearing, but today, she just hates them, and would die on not just having to listen to Brij, but dance to his tune as well. After all these months, after all that's happened, the situation is now this? She's regretting why she didn't die before having to dance like a puppet to Brij. Sudha comforts Jyoti while she's crying.
Downstairs, Brij is waiting. Pankaj releases Jyoti, and she starts her dance (which looks horrible, btw, but that's just me) The Sharmas are sad to see Jyoti's predicament, while Brij sings. Jyoti, hearing the lyrics, at first hesitates, but prompted by Gayatri, she starts dancing. (Again, if someone here were to translate the song, it would put into context Jyoti's reactions, and hesitations each time she stopped). The Sharmas are just as disgusted listening to Brij's lyrics, and having to watch Jyoti dance to him. Jyoti is just as disgusted to see Brij among Pankaj, MN & G, and her dance deteriorates continuously. Finally, Jyoti can stand it no longer, and runs out of the room. Brij turns towards his audience and feigns surprise. Everybody is shocked at this turn of events.
Back in her room, Jyoti is shaken and crying at what just happened. Pankaj comes at the door and asks her what happened, and she says that she got dizzy. He offers to call a doctor, but she tells him to return, since they have so many guests. She says she'll be back in a bit, and Pankaj asks her to be quick. Jyoti agrees, and Pankaj leaves.
Downstairs, everybody is gathered around the cake, as MN&G feed each other. CM offers one to Brij, and tells Pankaj that while the day certainly belonged to MN&G, since it's their anniversary, the star of the evening was Brij. Just then, Jyoti, who had been coming down the stairs, arrives and joins them, and needless to say, is unhappy to hear this. As are the Sharmas.
CM extols Brij's singing, and tells him that he has a magical voice (actually, it sounded really effeminate to me: for a guy, it's horrible!!!) He'd win over anybody so easily. Jyoti interrupts, and says that she couldn't perform properly, and CM, true to form, says that if one doesn't have one's heart in it, that thing cannot be done properly. That's the difference b/w her and Brij. The Sharmas & Pankaj are sad to hear this. CM continues that Brij was the reason the evening was not a disaster. The Sharmas & Jyoti are all sad to hear this.
CM continues to praise Brij, and asks him whether that was that favorite song of his? He affirms it. He tells her that one time, he used to sing that for his girlfriend. Jyoti looks at him disgusted, while CM asks why such a song for her girlfriend? Brij tells her that his girlfriend was a great dancer, and they loved each other very much. This song reminded him of her - whenever they met, her wanting him like crazy, and finally, her leaving him. CM sympathizes, and then asks that if they both wanted each other like crazy, what happened? Brij tells her that in today's world, love cannot come even close to riches. She found a rich guy, and given his riches, she forgot his love. The Sharmas are seething on hearing this, but can't say anything. She found this and left her home. At this point, Brij stops himself and apologizes for bringing up such a morose topic on such a joyous occasion. CM tells him that there is no need to apologize - if one's heart is broken, one does get hurt. Jyoti looks helplessly at her own family, and w/ disgust at Brij.
The party continues. CM is chatting w/ 2 ladies, when suddenly a guy arrives and interrupts them. It is Sumant - Minal's hubby. He says that they need to talk (I loved the way Sumant confronts CM, since no one else does). CM calls Minal and has her join them. Minal greets Sumant, but he signals her to stand aside. Sumant tells CM that she is fond of extravagant gifts, isn't she? (Exactly - finally, Sumant telling her what Jyoti or Sudha don't have the guts to tell her. In fact, Sumant did this even better than Padma did the other day) Both look at him shocked. Sumant asks CM whether just being wowed by the glitz of the party, he'd take Minal back home? He gives her a folder (I couldn't make out whether they were divorce papers or something else), and says that this is not the foundation of relationships (he is very right, but he seems to be backing his father in forcing on his bro-in-law someone he didn't want to marry). CM glares at him, but Sumant looks firmly back (I really admire this about him, even though I disagree w/ the root cause behind his decision). Brij is overhearing all this in the background.
Sumant continues, and Minal asks him why is she being punished for her bro marrying a different woman? Sumant says that he does love her, but is not prepared to go against his family on her behalf. (What a contrast w/ Uday & Sudha). He tells CM that he loves and honors them. CM upbraids him for siding w/ the wrongheaded decision of his father as opposed to her love of him. This is not love, but foolishness. Why doesn't he just admit that he fears his father? Sumant expresses surprise that being a mom, CM is talking like this. He asks her how she felt when Uday married against her wishes? (So Sumant is saying that Uday didn't have the right to marry someone CM didn't like?) She must have been upset, right? Still she expects him to go against his father? He says that unlike Uday, he won't oppose his family. CM tries to say something, but Sumant stops her, and says that if she expects that for the sake of her daughter he'd betray & hurt his family, she's got the wrong idea. He then leaves, w/ Minal crying after him. Minal then runs away upstairs, w/ CM calling after her.
CM then turns to Jyoti, who's standing there w/ Sudha & Uday, and as usual, blames her. She tells Jyoti that like Minal's FIL, her hubby himself refused to take her back. All b'cos of Jyoti. The Sharmas are shocked to hear that accusation, while CM asks Jyoti whether she's remotely aware of how Minal is suffering? She tells her that she'll never forgive Jyoti. She then leaves and goes upstairs to join Minal.
Brij then looks at Jyoti, realizing that CM hates her and that she's a real potential ally, and continues to smirk at her. He then walks up and takes leave of Pankaj, MN&G, and while leaving, stops by where the Sharmas are seated, and takes their leave, and tells them that since he now knows them, he looks forward to their next encounter. Deepu is furious, but Padma restrains him from moving forward. He then leaves the party. (Hopefully, this evening, the party will continue some more before everyone else leaves).
CM is at the dining table alone w/ Jyoti, and throws down a photo of Jyoti, Uday & Sudha in her wedding chundri. She repeats her accusation that Jyoti was behind this marriage, and challenges her on her smiling face in that photo. She says that Sudha would never have had the guts to make such a move on her own, and that it was Jyoti's support that enabled her to do it. Jyoti is depressed to hear this accusation repeated.
Today, my favorite part of the show was Sumant appearing and totally destroying CM's happiness at Brij's performance. I liked Sumant surfacing at the party, and giving CM a piece of his mind - looks like no one else can, even though I disagree w/ Sumant's reasoning, as well as his decision: it's one thing not to marry an unmarried girl one's family opposes, and another to abandon one's own wife. I might have had more sympathy for Minal had she asked Sumant whether her brother didn't have the right to select somebody other than a choice of his father. Since she chose not to, I wasn't unhappy at seeing him hand her the divorce papers, although that would potentially make Sudha's life more miserable. Exit question here - since Brij was overhearing everything, is it now his plan to try and seduce Minal, and win over the Vashisth family riches to his side? Looks like a good gameplan.
The rest of the show was, as one would expect, disgusting. Jyoti dancing listlessly to Brij, and then Brij outright lying about his ex girlfriend to CM (had Jyoti told Pankaj all this upfront, she'd not be humiliated this way on what ought to be one of her most special occasions). But aside from that, I loved the way Brij thumbed his nose at the Sharmas, and they could do nothing but fume.
Recommendation: if you avoided watching this, skip part 1, but watch parts 2 & 3. Yeah, it's not exactly enjoyable seeing Brij make up his own story about how his gf (Jyoti is who he's talking about) left him for a rich guy, since he left out the part about his eloping w/ his gf's youngest sister. OTOH, had Jyoti been honest, she'd not be in this predicament. But the real enjoyable part today was seeing Sumant confront CM on equal terms, and even if one disagrees w/ him re: Uday's right not to marry Sumant's father's choice, one has to admire him as a case study in how to confront bullies like CM.
